I wonder if anyone else feels like JJK characters are so much cooler than they have any business being. It just feels like even when the author was making misogynistic pieces of shit like Naoya, he maxed out their cool factor. Other shows don't do that. They'll make characters intentionally lame or weak or just boring, but I feel like JJK really maxes out the cool factor of all their characters.

Naoya and the Zenin clan are fucking disgusting, and you got the family tree that was quickly explained in this ep perfectly. The way Naoya talked about Maki and Mai also feeds into a pretty popular theory in the fandom: that the Zenin clan practices some form of endogamy or even inbreeding, to keep their bloodline and inherited cursed techniques within the “family.” It’s never explicitly confirmed in the story, but there are definitely some details that make the theory feel plausible and like it could be subtle worldbuilding from Gege. There’s also that scene when Mai is introduced back in Season 1, where she blushes while talking to Megumi and listening to his answer about his type🥲. Obviously, that wouldn’t really be Mai’s fault if she grew up with someone like Naoya around.

FYI You asked about what "culling" means. To "cull" means to remove from a group, and when it comes to living things that's usually by killing. For example, if you are culling a herd of cows it means you are killing some of them, typically (though not always) those that are somehow inadequate. Maybe those cows are diseased or don't have much meat on them so continuing to care for them would be a waste of resources. You might call the hunger games a culling since it takes a group of people and kills everyone but the strongest.

Naoya is one of Naobito's sons, who was the previous head of the clan and the one who died. Naobito has 2 brothers: Maki and Mai's father and Toji and Jinichi's father. Jinichi is indeed the big burly guy we saw this episode. This makes Toji and Maki cousins, and Maki Megumi's aunt.

It may be recency bias but I think I liked this season the most. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why season 2 is likely the greatest for everyone, but man I just wanted Shibuya to end after a point.
