One reason the series gives the viewer so little information is that it deliberately keeps us as confused as Shinji. It makes it easier to understand what he’s going through, since we’re just as lost as he is.

I think it's quite clear at this point that the Angels do pose a real threat to NERV, and losing even a single fight it is a death sentence for humanity. This is why Misato is willing to take such risks, there are no plans where they get 'good' odds, but she is willing to roll the dice anyway. Ikari also likes to roll the dice, but he certainly has information that the rest do not.

Lo unico que recordaba del capitulo era que estaba el angel en un volcan o algo asi, pero no recordaba todo esto con Asuka y que fuera tan tan animada

I think the sexual stuff is something you can see similar to chainsaw man, it's there, but it's not purposeless

I like some of the scenes in this episode but I would say it's probably the weakest episode of the show and borders on filler. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes when the show really hits its stride.

It goes without saying but ignore the people telling you to watch in a weird order. Just watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, then the movie End of Evangelion. The movie was created for people who had seen the television series. I really don't know why people are trying to overcomplicate this.

Please do watch the ending in the convoluted way. Episodes 1-24 -> EoE movie up to minute 73 -> Episodes 25-26 -> last 14 minutes of EoE. Not spoiling, if you don't watch the movie when it happens chronologically, you will NOT only feel like a major development of the plot has been skipped, but most importantly of character development. You'll be like "no, he doesn't think this, he doesn't want that, he wouldn't do this, this makes no sense", because the development and the thought train to those conclusions were in the movie.

Uhhh That’s not how they should slot in anyway. The Concurrency of Evangelion fanedit generally has a better idea… but then completely falls apart by the time it gets to the end with bizarre choices.

The sexual stuff can look and function as fanservice but I think it serves a deeper purpose in the story because it tells you a lot about the characters. I think people are so used to seeing that in anime that they will often watch all of evangelion and not realize it's not just fanservice.

Totally agree. It's not just fanservice

Hi! my I share my comments and easter eggs abut this episode: This episode introduces the Eighth Angel, Sandalphon. The name comes from later Jewish angelology and mysticism rather than the Hebrew Bible. It is described as an enormous angel who stands on Earth, reaches the heavenly realm, and creates crowns for God, which later traditions say are formed from human prayers. His name probably derives from the Greek synadelphos, meaning "companion" or "co-brother," possibly referring to Metatron, another major angelic figure later identified with the biblical Enoch ( and yes I know it sounds like a transformer or a pokemon but it's real ). The related term synadelphus was later used in medicine for a rare form of conjoined twinning with one head and trunk but four arms and four legs, although this usage is separate from the angel's original etymology. Medieval Kabbalists also connected Sandalphon's name with an unformed embryo receiving its final form, which fits his developmental state in the episode, although this connection was never confirmed by the production staff. His adult design was officially based on Anomalocaris, a Cambrian marine predator popularized in Japan by the 1994 NHK documentary Life: A Long Journey of 4 Billion Years. I made the disclaimer again that all this biblical and esoteric symbolism and etymology is mostly just a fun Easter egg. Hideaki Anno does not use these references as part of a rigorous theological system, and they usually contribute more to Evangelion's mysterious atmosphere and worldbuilding than to the actual plot. NERV confirms that the life-form is an Angel when its analysis returns "Pattern Blue," the classification used to identify Angels. During Gendo's meeting with SEELE, they warn that the capture operation carries an enormous risk and remind him of what happened fifteen years earlier. This directly connects to Episode 7, where Ritsuko revealed that Second Impact occurred while the First Angel was being studied. The English title "Magma Diver" references David Brin's 1980 science-fiction novel Sundiver. Hideaki Anno confirmed the reference and joked that he borrowed the title without having read the novel. The emergency authorization and the aircraft prepared to destroy the entire site if containment fails also resemble the 1971 science-fiction film The Andromeda Strain. However, this connection has not been directly confirmed by Anno, so it is better treated as a possible homage. I can't imagine what Shinji must have felt when he took Unit-01 into the volcano to save Asuka without the specialized Type-D equipment she was wearing. It must have felt like his whole body was burning : '( Finally, during the hot-spring scene, Asuka notices a large scar across Misato's body. Misato explains that she received it during Second Impact. Asuka then asks how much Misato knows about her past, and Misato cryptically replies that knowing is part of her job

Not knowing wtf is going in in the backstory? Welcome to the fandom. NGE is really well known for a couple of things. 1: Giant Robots. 2. [REDACTED] 3. [REDACTED] 4. That Penuin 5. [REDACTED] 6. How obtuse it is! oh of couse 7. How well crafted, but also really weird the whole 'family'/'household' dynamic is

It isn’t obtuse if actually watch the thing and listen to what is being said with an open mind instead of putting nerd glasses on and trying to deconstruct things into neat little boxes of trivia every time you hear a (yet) unclear piece of dialogue. The easiest least complicated answers to everything are the correct ones here - yes, including the religious references (like most classic sci-fi of 70-80-90s)

As per ep 7. The main point of Eva’s is their AT field being able to counteract the one of an Angel. The correct translation is complementation (genetic term - two mutants successfully complement each other in an offspring when you cross them from *different* genes, where each parent gives a normal, working copy of the gene that the other parent lacks. The offspring gets one working copy of both genes and shows a normal (wild-type) phenotype.). Old fan subs all used complementation. “Instrumentality” was (incorrectly) later chosen for all official translations because of a specific sci fi book that was used by authors as one of the inspirations early on. Simple misattribution/overthinking error on their part that stuck on since

I think the title/name itself for the project is just that. They are better off trying to speculate on what it is from context rather than figuring it out from the name itself.

V
Victor Katilis · August 3, 2026

Kaji was saying he wanted to see Asuka perform. No idea why it was translated like that here.

Wanting to see someone's gallant figure is very different from just wanting to see someone's figure, in Kyle's defense
