Jujutsu Kaisen 2x19 Reaction

Long comment and I dont really want to tell anyone how to interpret the story but, I think Nobaras death is an extension of Nanami's and Haibaras, fighting for good only works for those who are special grades, if even that considering Suguru and Satorou could have died. Yuji and Megumi both survived due to family/Sukuna and Mei Mei survived by "sacrificing" others. The current state of jujutsu society only works on the back of Satorou since the clans and higher ups are still nowhere to be seen.
Yea Gege is an actual madman. The Shibuya arc is like going through the red wedding. Enjoy sweet summer children :)
Will you girls react to the new Avatar Aang movie?
If you see Nobara from begging to End there wasn't much story to tell because unlike many of the other characters we see Nobara has a secure and strong sense of self. She knows who she is, what she wants and has the will to fight for it, that's who she is, that's who her character is. We also get to see her gentle side her kind side her caring side for her loved ones like Maki and tge rest of Her friends. Nobara was a complete character and the tragedy of seeing a glimpse of her potential in the fight vs Mahito adds to the weight of the story, the situation and the danger of the villain.
The only division I've seen regarding this scene is the people who can accept the type of story Gege is telling vs the people that want the story to be what's in their heads.
I understand why people find Nobara's death to be a misstep by the author but for me it does enough for the story to where I can live with it. To summarise this long yapping session, I think her death makes sense for the narrative Gege is telling and certainly furthers Yuji's character arc but makes no sense for her own character arc. The fact that people have objections to this is both completely unsurprising and understandable. I don't think this makes Gege a bad writer though. It further contributes to our understanding of the cruelty of the war and conflict in this world and how it affects the people in it. People's - and especially children's - lives are fragile and can be wiped out without achieving what they set out to or doing everything they wanted to, or being allowed to grow. It does all the more to show us how Nanami's and Gojo's mission to allow kids to be kids and grow and flourish is so very much needed. Deaths like Nanami's or the girls that are trying to kill Brain for Geto are gut wrenching but still predictable in some ways. Attacking the very core of the characters we care about by breaking the main trio is a great way of doing this because that trio should be untouched, at least at this point in the story. It obviously traumatizes and shocks Yuji in a way that probably no other character death can (except maybe Megumi but I doubt that as well). People will point to how that was already achieved by Nanami in the last episode but he was an adult. Yuji was able to pick himself back up after Junpei's death because he learned, in some ways, the wrong lesson: he was going to become strong enough to save lives. He's now being confronted with the fact that no matter how strong he might ever become, there are lives that will escape his grasp and will die. There is no end to his strength or his ability or his conviction to not lose that will allow him to save every life. The most conflicting part for me is always going to be her unfinished arc. It makes sense for the story for her to not finish it, given the nature of the world Gege has thus far portrayed. Nobara's character, however, is done a disservice and isn't allowed to grow or develop or finish her arc in a way that is satisfying.
Slight tangent and my own unhinged theory so take it with a grain of salt but if you've read this far, here you go: I interpret Yuji's lesson that he can't save everyone despite how much strength he has as the same lesson Gojo learned during his school years, that he can't save everyone no matter how strong he is. It also makes what Yuji says in 01x06 so much more tragic, when he tells Gojo 'sensei, teach me how to be strongest'. The fact that Yuji is now mirroring Gojo's arc could be foreshadowing that he is going to become the strongest at some point in the future so he is mirroring the lessons learned by his predecessor (Gojo). It runs into many of the themes told by Gege about the passing of the torch from the old to the new, repeated cycles of tragedy, etc. It would be interesting to see how Yuji breaks that cycle and how his philosophy is challenged and morphed by the world and what parts of his philosophy he keeps with him in his journey to become the strongest throughout this story (if that's the direction this is headed and I'm not insane).
Just as the principal said, Jujutsu sorcerers die with regrets, and we see that with both Nanami and Nobara. But what I really like is that both of them cared so much about Yuji that they chose their final words to be somewhat hopeful, even though their deaths were horrible : "You take it from here" / "Tell everyone that life wasnt so bad"
I don’t think I have ever hated an anime character more than I hate Mahito. I don’t wanna understand, I just hate it with my soul.
What's up with all the Chainsaw Man fans and other anime fans in the comments? Did you crawl up from your caves specifically for this episode just to shit on it? Isn't it kinda weird to hatewatch something waiting for a controversial writing decision so you can proudly proclaim "and that's why this entire work sucks and the author can't write at all and it's the worst anime that only has hype moments and fighting and no meaning whatsoever". I myself am a not a big fan of some choices Gege as author made, including this one with Nobara, however I understand that almost every manga/anime has its problems with writing and JJK is not uniquely bad on that front. But there's a problem with anime fans like the ones in the comment section.. Y'all are trying so hard to sound like it's just "constructive criticism" but your opinion always concludes with shitting on JJK in it's entirety, bringing up how it doesn't deserve its popularity and how it has no worth for the true intellectuals. You end up parroting the same ill-intentioned and sometimes even purposely misinformed takes you saw on the internet and reject/ignore any positive aspects of this work and it's not what criticism is, it's hating. The hate JJK gets in the anime community is often so disingenuous, because it stems from jealousy and bitterness over its popularity. Even when Lola and Milena were only concidering to watch JJK, you were up and down their comments deciding for them that they're not gonna like it and saying how it's a dumb action slop with nothing to analyze. It's just weird behavior.
I nearly quit the show after this episode my top two characters dying back to back as insane jjk
the swearing in Serbian is back JK you gave me something I have missed since AOT
I think the JJK haters are really embodying the point about the "loud minority" in this very comment section. But even fans of the series take issue with Nobara's character and I think that's valid. I feel the same. But if I'm being honest, I could probably list quite a few issues I have with how Gege treats her before I even got to this episode. I think people who are most upset about her death are looking for a version of the series in which Gege did more with her character before now.
I remember this JJK episode completely broke me, so I watched The 100 girlfriends to heal my sanity. If you're still looking for more healing vibes, I also highly recommend 'You and I Are Polar Opposites.' It's absolutely filled with happiness.
The way Lola and Yuji have the same stare at the end of the episode is wild
Season 1 is such a trap
I have positive feelings towards JJK overall, but yeahhh, I wasn't a fan of how this sequence played out. Before anyone jumps on me, I can (and do) appreciate the purpose it served in the plot. Having these major traumas occur back-to-back creates a REALLY visceral emotional arc, and I'm not against "anyone can die"-type stories on principle. But from a pure storytelling perspective, I would still say the way it went down was a fumble. My own reaction was the same as yours on the first watch, and I've seen it with other reactors as well - just staring at the screen going "Wait, it's happening like THIS? Are you kidding?" Which, I think, is a markedly different reaction than you want to elicit from your audience when you kill off a major character unexpectedly.
gege vas a caer
Gege Akutami is a bad bad man. :')
homegirl got shell shocked back into her native language
Its always extremely sad when I get to this point in the story. Losing Nobara sucks, but I've never really questioned the storytelling or the decision to kill her off. I know a lot of people will get into the conversation about "unfulfilled character arcs" or "she had so much more potential" but to me its always been a case of death doesn't work like that in real life so why should it be wrong for it to work like that in fiction. From the start death has been a huge theme in the show and how it can happen to anyone despite what they can offer and give to the world, especially for Jujutsu sorcerers who give they're lives every day in situations like this.
I enjoy JJK a lot it’s a good show but this episode is what stopped me from having it as one of my favorites. Deciding to kill Nobara off is still one of the dumbest decisions Ive seen in shows that Ive watched. It’s not that I’m against killing characters. I absolutely loved everything about Nanami’s death. It’s just that this felt like nothing more than shock value 🤷🏻♂️. It feels like the author prioritized tragedy over his character. Nobara as a character had so much potential, so much more to offer and the author just decided to kill her off to do what ? Cause Yuji more pain and make him hate Mahito more ? Didn’t Junpei’s death already achieve that ? Didn’t Nanami’s death already achieve that ? What was the purpose ? Nobara’s character was completely wasted and it still rubs me the wrong way to this day. I will say tho I still enjoy the show a lot but this was without a doubt not the greatest decision from the author in my opinion.
It’s been awhile since Patreon comments got nasty
The same thing happened to me with Nobara's death. I had a very clear idea of where I thought this story was going, and both Nanami's and this death impacted me deeply. I understand the love-hate surrounding the timing of her death, but I truly believe that from this point it defines the author's vision for the type of story he wants to tell. Although I do think Gege, in general, is quite cruel and heartless hahah
I think too many of you are calling this “bad writing” because your retroactively looking at where the series went, and not where it currently is. This is not “bad writing” it imo becomes bad writing because of where gege takes the story in the end but this scene in itself is fine writing wise, it’s just bold, and extremely unexpected.
The extremely unexpected can be good writing. There’s a way to do shock factor deaths that serve the story and characters. In my opinion, this isn’t it.
What in the HELL is happening......in this mangaka's mind?
JJK is the only show I’ve seen that does outro transitions (almost) as well as HxH
Fun Fact: This arc spawned a trend among the Latin American community called "Gege vas a Caer" As in Gege Akutami, the author. This could be translated to "Gege you are gonna pay"
:(
My favorite part of JJK is seeing the light and innocence be drained out of Yuji's eyes in real time in 4k ultra-HD. My favorite park of JJK reactions is seeing the same thing happen to the reactors.
Don’t care too much for this show but it’s funny to me how often an episode will come up and the big talking point is ‘they killed a character off’ it’s like the squid ward ‘feeling daring are we’ meme
It's so funny how JJK haters always know exactly when to pull up in the comments just to show off their surface-level understanding of the story😭😭 Y'all lowkey acting like fans atp
its my birthday today... and what a present i received 🥲😭
Nobara's backstory always makes me cry. It's hard to find compelling female characters in shonen, and I always loved how refreshing and unique she felt from the moment she was introduced. On the surface, she carries herself with so much pride and toughness, but once she's comfortable with someone, you get to see how caring and protective she is toward the people she loves. I also love that Saori taught her it was okay to embrace that side of herself. I feel like the fact that she's so much softer and more gentle around women is deeper than what it seems. The way she lets her guard down around them makes me feel like she had to build that rough exterior to protect herself from the people in her village, who we learn were deeply prejudiced and intolerant to others. Those people didn't deserve to see the more gentler, vulnerable side of her. It's not that she disliked being that way, it was that she believed only certain people had earned the right to see it. "There are only so many open seats in my life, and I don't want to let my heart be swayed by anyone who's not sitting in one of them. Of course, there are also people like you who bring their own seat and sit down." This is what she tells Yuji in Season 1, Episode 24. Despite all the walls she built around her heart, some people at Jujutsu High managed to "pull up a chair" and become part of her life. I love how this episode uses that symbolism to show just how much she had grown to love the people around her. She understood herself so well and wasn't afraid to express exactly who she was. That's why her death will always be one of the most conflicting ones for me. I'll always wish we'd gotten to spend more time with her.
Can confidently say that I think this is the worst decision that Gege could have possibly made for her character. I just hate it so much. I want to add that this reads as queer subtext to me, her possibly being a lesbian in a small town and wanting to move to a big city where private affairs aren't easily spread around... the first time I watched this episode I thought of this (and I'm probably not the only one) and it made this whole episode even more devastating. I'm aware that this is a headcanon though. Also, you guys mentioning that her death only servers Yuji's character makes this whole situation suck even more, because you're right. I will never stop being upset about how her character was handled.
You all saying this as if it is the first time something like this happened. For me I love the decision because it actually hurt, which makes the show more realistic. A decision that makes you have strong feelings cannot be bad writing.
You know what.. as much as I don’t like jjk. I have to respect Gege in some way to not stick to some shounen rules ..with that being said. As someone who already read the manga, I can tell you that all these decisions are going to be criticized even heavier in the future when look back at these episodes.. that’s all I’m going to say lol
If you don't like JJK, why are you here week after week?
JJK is ultimately influenced by Buddhist mysticism and Buddhism is about suffering
Buddhism is the opposite of suffering
I once read that stories have to make more sense than real life. This episodes reactions show why someone came up with that "rule". I love Gege for throwing it out.
IM GOING FOR YOUR HEAD GEGE AKUTAMI
From sukuna taking over to this point happend within an hour btw💔
And the pain train continues lmaooo.
Why did Nobara have to die? Well, she had to because Gege is an author who needs to shock his readers to generate "engagement", since he doesn't know how to connect all the characters he's introduced or the entire plot he's built to conclude a good story. In Shibuya, he lined up a random number of characters introduced through flashbacks, characters who then had no significant interactions with each other to justify plausible development, and are killed off with more flashbacks to make you cry. This was already evident with Mechamaru, but with Nobara, it finally becomes clear that this is Gege's favorite tactic. And the worst part is that he had time to better develop his characters and story, but he spent all that time introducing new characters with the same modus operandi (because that's what JJK needs most: more secondary characters), prioritizing action, and over-explaining his "convoluted" magic system, which isn't exactly groundbreaking. Some call this writing subversive, realistic, or bold; I call it mediocre. We can expect more of the same in future seasons.
Sure Jan
They finally see what Shibuya is all about
Ah yes, the pain continues. Yuji felt some hope seeing Nobara's technique helping him and then it happens like this.. I think Itadori needs a hug. I really like seeing Nobara's chair analogy represented that she mentioned in season 1. She talks about not giving people with false intentions a chance to claim a seat in her life and how those seats are limited. Only for people like Yuji to show up with his own and sit down with her. Here we see a continuation with that with Megumi, Yuji, Gojo, her upper classmen Maki, Panda, Inumaki and her childhood friend Fumi, all sitting in their seats. But that's not all there is, there are a lot more seats available, showing just how much space there really was in her life for other people with good intentions and that would be the majority of people. Because focusing on those loud voices, that minority, that trample on other peoples lives and letting them dictate how you navigate through the world was never the answer. For those people are largely insignificant, a buzzing you can hear only if you focus on it and the real people you should listen to are the ones sitting next to you, people who you value and who value you back, if you only let them. The song at the end with her last words being 'Life wasn't so bad' with a smile is just heartbreaking. Of what was and what could have been.
That's how you know it's real, when they start speaking Serbian 😂. NGL you two are so impressive with how you predict how an episode is going based on common writing cues, it's nice to see you two surprised.
Both the girls looking like they're about to ask me what my type of woman is
a truly brutal episode, totally understand Lola reacting the way she did
my theory is the author wanted to get rid off kugisaki because her ability is too op xd BUT this episode was so beautiful that i don't care also my story and i think many other jjk fans stories are similar to kugisaki's with desire to escape to the city and bullying and stuff so it hits hard :)))
he said he was the hardest character to draw, so..
Couldn't believe it either, girls. The audacity to do this was insane.
I love this show
24:28 Lola im 😭😭 also i been meaning to answer the question you asked a while back about what the hand signs in the opening are. idk if anyone else answered yet but they are a mix of the activation signs for sorcerers & curses technique’s and domains. the one you mentioned that was your fav the 🤞 is Gojo’s handsign for activating his domain.
they’re references to buddhist handsigns!!
the sheer genital fortitude to potentially kill off fan favorites back to back - if I wasn’t so wholly devastated I’d applaud the writing decision
omgg
I love a bold author. Yes, it’s bad if it’s for shock value, but this is not the case here. It’s realistic that a kid dies facing off an enemy an adult died to in the previous ep. This just proves that Gojo is right that this is a flawed system and the higher ups need to have someone to keep them in check and protect the kids - Gojo
Nah man that's just bad writting, she was just used as a plot device to give Yuji more trauma which he didn't really needed that
I don't see how Nobara dying is divisive. They are jujutsu sorcerers, they can die at any moment. Backstory or not, someone dies, someone else takes their place. You keep going with the story. Gege doesn't shy away from killing off characters to then alter the storyline of other characters, I respect it.
!!SPOILER!! While I partially agree with this, he didn’t even commit to it so… that makes this decision feel cheaper
Gege was not loved as a child. That has to be the only explanation
One of the most brainless writing decisions I have ever seen. Can't believe nobody told him "No."
You can certainly not like it but it's certainly not brainless
Weird to see so much mixed feelings towards this in the comments. For me it's just so weird to think storytelling has to adhere to some kind of rules like "you shouldn't kill off characters unless their arc is done and it's earned." Stuff like that just makes stories so predictable and tropey. Having major important characters with unfinished arcs get fucking killed out of nowhere is a bold decision but it really communicates the stakes and gets you on edge, which is what Gege wants. If Nobara can die out of nowhere, ANYONE can. Except maybe Yuji. Relying on "they have an arc so they won't die" or "it wouldn't make sense for them to die here" would make it way too easy to predict deaths and the villains would feel neutered as a result because they can't kill anyone important. Like if the previous episode wasn't enough, this death makes you VERY clear on just how much Mahito needs to go. I respect immensely Gege's choice because it's been a long long time since there's been a villain that has stirred up so much hate as Mahito.
It's not that you have to or can't do things different. It's about why you do it and how's that executed. Many people, me included, think he dropped the ball here, but getting into details will require spoilers.
I love the ever present critics to conservatism and superstision specially on the country side coming from this anime. Creepy old folks who can not help themselves, they use dogma and tradition to glue their communities together and ostracises anyone who doesn't "belong" for whatever reason
I hadn't watched Season 1 since it originally aired in 2020, and rewatching it with y'all made me realize I'd completely forgotten just how lighthearted it was. Looking back now, it's kind of wild knowing where the story ends up. I have to give Gege credit—he created a story with genuinely massive stakes, and seeing that contrast from the beginning makes it hit even harder.
in gojo's own words, no one's allowed to take the youth away from young people... with the sole exception of Gege Akutami, of course.
This is the episode that made me kind of lose interest for awhile. Nobara was one of my favorite characters and they already had a major death recently where I felt this was just for shock value. Many disagree but I HATED that they killed off. Especially because it’s only the second season. I feel like she had so much left to do. Wasted potential imo.
I totally understand why people don't like it, but at the same time that's why it's good imo, shonen are always really tropey and very very very predictable. JJk setting was dark from the get go, it's the real life, you don't die as a hero, you just die with regrets and that's why i love CSM and JJK. I would still like jjk if it was a predictable shonen tho
"the rules of television" are not something Gege Akutami adheres to I fear (
I hate that there's anything like "rules of television/storytelling" Like 'omg no you can't kill off characters unless they are at a satisfying point in their arc and it makes sense to do it!!!' Then how would death ever have any impact? If every character death is earned storytelling then every character death is predictable and it feels like the narrative is planned around their deaths. When Nobara just gets slimed out of nowhere it tells the viewer that the stakes are real, no one is safe, and this story is never going to be something you predict or plan on. That's how you create investment instead of another bog-standard plot.
They are natural enemies because their attacks affect the soul
What happened in this episode is probably the most divisive and disliked writing decision the author of this manga has made. As for my perspective, i "see" the vision but it doesn't mean i fully agree with it. He thought to himself losing a mentor and being blamed for a massacre might be straining on Yuji but those are not uncommon in fiction. So he went for more. He wanted something even more for challenging Yuji as a character and he used Nobara for that. The problem is Nobara as a character still has so much more to offer this story. As a person who had to leave his hometown for similar reasons I fully relate to Nobara's backstory and can feel how genuine her desire for leaving was. As usual he's very good at writing these heartfelt backstories. But still despite that I don't feel like her character arc is finished. It is realistic as we don't always get to finish what we want especially given the stakes here at Shibuya but still... So while I do see the vision I can see this decision being very divisive and frustrating.
I think it's natural for such a drastic writing decision to be divisive. I am also upset that Nobara's arc is unfinished, but even more than that, I respect Gege's gall as a writer to subvert expectations and shatter genre conventions. I understand the desire to have the core three stick it out the entire show like in every other anime, but you can see that in every other anime. I think a drastic plot point like this makes the story far more unique. It makes me feel like I'm watching a brand new story that has no comparison. I think whether or not someone likes this decision hinges on how well they can recover after the absolute gut-punch.
RIP Kugisaki, gutted watching this again
Welcome to the part of JJK where characters with unfinished arcs die just so the action can take up more space in the show :D Edit: Guys, don't take my comment so seriously. I love Chainsaw Man Part 1. We are the same. RIP Himeno & Reze.
I don't think it was so that more action can take up the space of the show, I think it was something like trying to subvert expectations and shock the viewers as normally they don't write off major character deaths back to back . I feel like they used nobara's character after what happened to nanami to make mahito's character more menacing and annoying at the same time so that fans can truly hate that character to the core . I have not read the Manga so I don't know about what happens but I have heard some non spoilery mixed reviews for future episodes. Lets see what happens . Only thing got me spoiled was Kit Kat.
Episode hit me like a slap in the face
Now this is some good fucking food
Lola's "Molim" returns after AOT 3x17 reaction lol You know that they are shocked when there's subtitles for their comments XD
Gege recently had dinner with another author, now whenever something bad happens to characters in that author's manga people blame Gege
Its fine the new avatar movie comes out tomorrow that’ll make you happy again
Avatar movie July 25, new Avatar show October 9 (26 episodes dropping at the same day). You have your next long show I guess :D
New show looked pretty meh tbh, with a pretty bland/cheap looking art style you see in most animation shows recently
Anyone remember when the girls watched Season 1 EP 1 and said this show was surprisingly light hearted? Fun times.
Missing Ending 1 vibes right now
Lola's brain hit factory reset and started rebooting back in Serbian
reminded me of the attack on Titan days
RIP Kugisaki, she was a great character man, had no words when this ep dropped
Girls you need to start Jojo
Jojo is a hard thing to recommend. It’s peak don’t get me wrong but, I can see them dropping show. Yes, you know who is a great villain but, it’s a tough anime to recommend
Mahito's easily the best ragebaiter in the series
The song during the Kugisaki scene is my most streamed Spotify song ever. I have a Kugisaki tattoo. I hate this episode 😭
Gege will never escape my hate
It's always great to see reactors discovering that our beloved writer Gege is a brutal, heartless man. 💔
Why is it bad?
yeah.....
More sad edits incoming?
Yeah this was a heavy one.... Happy Friday?
I’ve had such a rough week at work and seeing this notification was like gold loot in Fortnite and yes I realize how messed up that is for this episode
:(
This is why Mahito is my fav, every second he is on screen, he is just so fun to watch
"fun" he gives me depression.
It can’t get any worse, right guys… right?
😔😔😔😔
very interested in this discussion
same
you are my special...
i'm so sorry 😭
