"3 that had humanity in them". *Casually forgets jogo burning people alive for fun*. Stop with the sympathy for the evil curses. They are all terrible. Equally

"You don't have to shout, I can hear you, Itadori Yuji!" Mahito's VA was amazing, I'll always remember how Mahito shouts this line, mocking Yuji. Somehow to me it's the standout moment for the character.

F
Filip ivis · July 22, 2026

What a nice guy Sukuna is, he even fully healed Yuji before massacring thousands of people for research purposes.

R

The hatred for Mahito they cook into our hearts... It's maddening. I HATE HIIIIIIM!!!!!

P
PennGillette · July 22, 2026

I feel like Mahito is a bit more of an interesting villain when you start seeing him as a collection of humanities worst traits. Humans are imperfect, and people have a mix of good and bad qualities and behaviours, but Mahito just manifests as those traits out of context, isolated, and concentrated.

T
Tuleo · July 22, 2026

I think it's awesome how this show portraits a curse not just like energy or a technique, like part of a magic system. It talks about the will of someone can become a "curse" itself. When Nanamin was at his final moments he saw Haibara, and was reluctant to say to Itadori "you take it from here" bc it implies that you HAVE to keep doing this. For someone like Namanin to confer such responasbility to what's in fact a kid was at a bare minimun inappropiate but he said it anyway bc probably judging by the scene, Haibara said the same thing to Namanin in his final moments.

B
Bishop · July 22, 2026

The “black lighting fist” you keep mentioning isn’t something special shared by Yuji and Nanami, think of it like a “critical hit” anything that uses cursed energy to fight is capable of landing one. It just so happens Yuji and Nanami are the only ones we are showed/told so far, the ones who have landed multiple in a row

Something that is shown here is the disparity in our villains being compared side to side: Mahito is pure evil, he adores being malicious and is made of humans hate for each other but Sukuna in his section isn’t. He’s horrible and monstrous for sure but we do still see glimmers of humanity in him: he insists on seeing value in Megumi that Megumi himself doesn’t see, he has a long term ally in Urame, and goes out of his way to compliment Jogo letting him die satisfied. Sukuna does have an odd element of appreciating the world and people around him even as he destroys them that Mahito does not share

Q
Quinn Balsam · July 22, 2026

I know this is said every episode, but I think your analysis is pretty prescient this episode about the subtext of curses spirits as a mirror humans. As stated by the other cursed spirits in Jogo's death, Mahito really is the closest to their goal of "true human". The degree to which they exist as a mirror to humanity in a way that the other disaster curses never really come close to emulating is pretty incredible. I've very excited for your reaction to episode 20 as I think the dialogue in that episode provides some of the best information about Mahito's true nature in relation to not only humanity to but the nature of curses in general.

Q
Quinn Balsam · July 22, 2026

Say all that to say, while Mahito themself may not have the nuance of an average character, that lack of nuance combined with the nuance imposed on Mahito by the concept of curses and negative cursed energy, forms them into a full character.

Nanami’s VA broke my heart in the behind the scenes recording of his final lines. In the video you can see him doing his best to hold back tears while delivering "You take it from here" to Yuji because he wasn't supposed to cry in that scene. He once said that Yuji was his favorite character and that he was especially fond of the relationship between Yuji and Nanami. Every time he talked about Nanami or the series, it felt like he had such a deep understanding and love for his character. One of my favorite answers he ever gave was when he was asked: "If you could send a message to your character, what would you say?" (I think this was around S1) This was Kenjiro Tsuda's answer: “Nanami-san, you came back saying that you took the lesser of two idiotic evils. I am glad you returned because I get to experience your line of work for myself.
Your way of life is so cool. Thank you for existing” He truly was Nanami's No.1 fan😔

By the way, Nanami is one of the author's favorite characters BUT, his real favorite is Sukuna, he said so, and it's noticeable in the narrative.🤣 So he wasn't against killing Nanami lul

Б
Богдан Басов · July 21, 2026

Objectively, if Mahito evokes this huge bunch of negative emotions, it means the author did a good job of portraying him as a villain. By the way, he also has feelings and a desire to fight for an idea, but it's just the psycho vibe he's exploring that negates all of this.😭

M
Matthew Melanson · July 21, 2026

When they got so attached to Nanami so fast and deeply I knew ah this will be a sad day for rain.

I
Isaiah Cox · July 21, 2026

You know ive been wondering is there any anime or shows where the mentor DOESNT die and they reverse the trope and have the student die instead?

M
Mo0t · July 22, 2026

That would be peak. Like the student is the main character for the first part of the story, then they die and we get a protagonist swap to the mentor. Someone has to write this.

I

I do love complex villains with understandable motivations even if the way they go about achieving those goals is wrong but mannnnn sometimes its just really nice to be able to hate a piece of shit like Mahito without any reservations 😭 like pls kill this curse next episode yuji

b
beannie · July 21, 2026

When this chapter came out, I had to take a break from reading the manga😭 I was devastated. Even though Nanami's death made perfect sense to me narratively, I felt exactly the same way you girls did... I just wished we'd gotten to see more of him. I'll always love how he kept fighting despite being so exhausted by the injustice of the world. Even on his deathbed, he kept going because he had to make sure Fushiguro was ok... that part always leaves me unwell. I also wanted to share some of the things Gege Akutami has said about Nanami's death. He revealed that he had planned for Nanami to die during this arc from the very beginning. Nanami is Gege's favorite character (i commented this before i think), and he's mentioned that he sometimes has these "episodes" while writing where his characters seem to come to life and "write themselves." Apparently, that was the case with Nanami, which i feel like reinforces the fact that he was such a grounded and well written character. And here's a little fun fact that's... not very fun lol😭. Gege also shared that Nanami did want to get married one day, but not while he was still a sorcerer, because there was always the possibility that he wouldn't make it back home. Rip to the adult of adults :(((

G
Gift · July 21, 2026

14:47 Patrons were trying to run the sympathy gimmick for these scumbags a couple of episodes ago. Drinking countless human being like a smoothie. Fuck them viciously. Miss me with the compromises, the hypotheticals, the possibilities, their motives and all. It takes an episode like this, a tragedy like Nanami to understand why these guys must be rejected fully, no room for compromise.

M
Mo0t · July 22, 2026

Bro you really got to take a step back. Think about what it might be like to be an intelligent being that happens to not be human. What if you were outnumbered, in a society where humans persecute your kind? No one is asking you to forsake humanity, but if you seriously cannot step outside of yourself and consider a different perspective, maybe fiction just isn't for you.

n
nellie · July 21, 2026

Rest in peace Nanami... Congratulations Gege on creating the most annoyingly frustrating character ever😭I don't think I've ever wanted to reach through my screen to choke a character to death this bad before. I'm not excited for the next episode at ALL.

A
AnGecko · July 21, 2026

I don't think I've seen an antagonist in an anime generate so much hatred from the viewers as efficiently as mahito does, what a phenomenal villain and so poetic that the curse born from humanity uses the cruelest tactics and plans to "kill one's soul" by torturing people's mental state... you guys said during this episode that "we have to kill him quickly because look how fast he's evolving" which is a great observation, and very fitting I think for the "human" curse

T
Theo Santader · July 21, 2026

Omg you watched 18 and 19 together? what a combo. I was gonna recommend 19 and 20 together instead because that would be a better match in my mind. For the record we had the luxury of waiting a week between 18 and 19, so i can't imagine your experience...

A

About next episode: "please do not end on a cliffhanger".... well, damn...

A
AnGecko · July 21, 2026

season 1 episode 2, principal yaga: "jujutsu sorcerers never die without regret." season 1 episode 13 when nanami was trapped by mahito's domain "I have no regrets" which he ultimately survives in this episode nanami spent a good deal of time listing his regrets, not getting to go to the place he wanted for vacation, read all the books he bought and never had the time for... and finally not saying what he wanted to to yuji because he remembered his late friend haibara who was just like him... this episode just reinforces what a tragic life it is to be a jujutsu sorcerer

M

J
Jack SV · July 21, 2026

I will get jump by 98% of the comments but this episode really made me appreciate Mahito lol he might be my favorite cursed spirit besides Sukuna. Look I know a lot of people were sad about Nanami but I will be honest.. I wasn’t too attached to this character for me to cry or be sad about it. I will say moving forward until the end of this season is Mahito that makes this season more entertaining for me. I know people hate him a lot and I won’t debate that but he is really one of the most entertaining antagonists this anime/manga has so far.

C
Chlo · July 21, 2026

tbh i share this sentiment about mahito. i actually did care quite a bit about nanami and his death did hurt me a lot, but i still just can't bring myself to hate mahito. he's just such a fantastic and entertaining villain. honestly, i think he fact that he is so vehemently hated by a wide majority of the audience means that his character was nailed perfectly. he's meant to be a disgusting and awful monster, and my god if he isn't that! he's so vile but so entertaining to see on screen bc you never know what the hell he's going to do next

Nanami is a prime example of a worker who is too much of a good person for a job like this. I like how Jujutsu Sorcery was made like your typical 9-5 job with too much unpaid overtime instead of a glorified job and I think the way Jujutsu Sorcery is portrayed in this show is a direct critique of the current state of the job market and crunch culture which is also very frequent in Japan. Older people/higher ups take advantage of the good heart of people like Nanami while they contribute nothing. Nanami left after Haibara's death and only returned due to that encounter with the baker girl because he didn't want his life to be aimless and to contribute positively to society. Yet the show asks the question again. Is it worth it? Is it really worth sacrificing your entire youth in a thankless job like this? Ironically, he escapes death in season 1 from the same Mahito after saying he has zero regrets. Here though he dies full of regrets and once again proving the principal right. Jujutsu sorcerers never die without regret. The words he chose at the end were picked with absolute care so he wouldn't curse Yuji at his death because as you've seen so far(grandpa), final words have a higher chance to curse someone. I remember you said we need 10 Nanamis to fix things but unfortunately i don't think 10 Nanamis can fix a mess like Shibuya and this system as a whole. A better wish would be asking for 5 Gojos and 5 Nanamis. We need multiple of both types of these characters for society to improve.

E
Em , · July 21, 2026

Yes! I adore the critique of society that comes from simply having a character like Nanami exist in the story. Additionally, him being a foil to Mei Mei as well who thrives in this culture because she cares about herself and her money more than anything else. Nanami who was once also obsessed with the idea of money not be able to live like that because it’s meaningless and he saw this job as a better choice for him because he helped bakery girl. Her gratitude was why he could say he had no regrets because he did something that made her life slightly better. He’s constantly putting the lives of the kids before his own because that’s who he is meanwhile we see Mei Mei willingly put her little brother in danger. The contrast between them both shows how this world isn’t for children despite the fact they’re forced into it and exploited by the conservative higher ups who only care about keeping everything the same. Nanami is one of the few people we see who want to help the youth in a society built to get half of them killed and traumatise the rest. Gege is saying exactly what he needs to with their characters about how this system and jujutsu society will always reward selfishness and how we in reality will always suffer under capitalism and people who put profits over helping young people thrive.
