ive given you a google drive link to this episode because im about to delete it off of youtube. unfortunately we have received a strike on episode 1, we knew this could be the case which is why we cut the episode down more than usual but i guess it was not enough. so out of precaution we’re gonna remove the videos off of youtube and replace them with links, and for future uploads - i guess this is about to be a first time patreon exclusive

I think the positron rifle used to snipe the angel in this episode might have been intended as a nod to the 1974 anime, Space Battleship Yamato. It was an epic space opera series which this show's director, Hideaki Anno, has cited in interviews as a huge influence. The Yamato's most powerful weapon was a massive energy beam fired from its bow, called the Wave Motion Gun. It required 300 seconds to fully charge and would temporarily drain power from the entire ship. Since Yamato is an older term used to describe the nation of Japan, and Misato commandeers the full capacity of the county's electrical grid as a power supply for the rifle, the similarities are hard to dismiss.
that's frustrating but not the first time i've seen it happen. some other creators ran into the same problem and had to go patreon exclusive with it too. really weird and frustrating the rights holder is doing this but oh well.
Sorry about the strike. I still think it is worth it for the pre and post-discussions. It also lets people know that you are reacting to the series. I hope you can continue to enjoy the story of Evangelion despite these issues.
So sorry to hear about the strike! I was wondering, could you maybe just post the pre and post-discussions on YouTube, and keep the actual reaction exclusive to Patreon? I'd hate to see you react to EVA only for it to bring in way fewer paid members than usual.
Such a shame about the strike on episode 1... Evangelion is already 30 years old! It would be so nice to have more people posting reactions to this classic anime and maybe bringing more people to watch, but companies gotta be stupid.
This is absolutely infuriating. I can't imagine why this particular distributor or whoever is so terrible with copyright. But I signed up for Patreon for this series in particular, so.
Wow sorry to hear about the strike 😱😱
Listening to your discussion at work I can’t believe you watched so many episodes in one sitting, the show is so heavy. I can’t believe I watched this as a tween
1:04 Neon comes from the Greek word Neos, which means new. Genesis means Origin, the beginning. Evangelion comes from ancient Greek and means good message or good news or Gospel. "Gospel of the New Beginning"
Lola and Milena are the best reactors because A) they are so empathic and kind and B) they are so good at analyzing and theorizing about what they watch.
Ohhh the theories continue.. ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶ you girls are definitely cooking something. That’s all I gotta say lol
A fun fact about angels and the Bible in general: We often automatically associate angels with beautiful, childlike figures—winged babies holding harps—yet the Bible’s descriptions of them are quite different and not widely known. Even demons feared them; God's messengers are described as completely abstract, massive, and rather unsettling beings. One of them, Seraphim, is described as a winged entity covered in multiple eyes. Ezekiel is described as a giant, flaming wheel, also covered in eyes. The Cherubim are similar in nature. That is why, whenever angels appeared before Zechariah or the shepherds, they would begin with the phrase "be not afraid"—to calm the fear caused by their terrifying presence. I recommend looking up images on Google; they are worth seeing.
"If you ask me, Rei is not human." Ladies, careful now, there are 3 decade old fans that would fight you tooth and nail for statements like that over their waifu Rei. LMAO
A cool reference in Episode 6 is the name “Operation Yashima.” The name comes from the Battle of Yashima, a famous episode from medieval Japanese war literature set during the Genpei War, a late 12th-century civil war between two powerful samurai clans, the Minamoto and the Taira. In The Tale of the Heike, there is a scene where the Taira place a folding fan on a pole on one of their boats, challenging the Minamoto to shoot it down. The archer chosen for the attempt is Nasu no Yoichi, who has to hit a tiny target from horseback while the boat is moving on the water, making it an almost impossible precision shot. According to the legend, he hits the fan with a single arrow. That makes the Evangelion reference much clearer. The positron rifle detail is also fun even if it is sci-fi rather than strict real-world physics. A positron is the antimatter counterpart of an electron, with the same mass but the opposite electric charge. Since positrons are charged particles, their path could be affected by electromagnetic fields, which fits the episode treating the shot more like a complicated firing solution than a simple straight laser beam
It’s Genesis with a soft G, like a ‘J’. They had it nailed for an episode and then Lola took it off-course again 😂 Misato is really given her flowers as a leader this episode. The entire sequence of planning to take Japans electric grid and centralise it is so cool to watch. I think I mentioned before but this show does its techno-babble very well. It feels well conceived and like the characters know what they’re talking about, even if the audience doesn’t.
Depending on your language, in English yeah, but it's an Ancient Greek word and it was pronounced with a hard G, like in Gendo. In my language it's also pronounced like in Ancient Greece, in Serbia most likely too.
