That the supposedly super smart character relies on short term psychological manipulation for her big plan seems rather dumb to me. Soldier Boy was indeed shown to have another girlfriend that he was about in season 3. He even mentioned Stormfront once when they went to Herogasm, but it didn't sound like he was in love with her. I think he also said he fought against Nazi Germany in World War II? Yet he loved the Nazi Stormfront. So yeah, his story here makes little sense and his constant flipflopping is annoying. I probably would have been more interested in his spin-off show if they hadn't brought him back this season.
Ngl this episode feels like a big advertisement for the next Boys spin off lol. Now.. did I enjoy the episode? Yes.. but again, I wish we could’ve got this in an earlier season instead of this one. Regarding Sage.. I will be honest, the writers wrote themselves in a corner with her character as soon as they told us she is supposed to be the smartest character in this show. Like.. I get there is some probability of unpredictability but that was such a dumb decision from her. And Soldier boy.. oh boy… I like the character but I feel he was forced in this season for the sake of it. They didn’t know what to do with him.
Writing smart characters is not easy, but I expected a show like The Boys to handle something like this with a writing room as big as theirs. I also have the feeling that they were limited in their story ideas because their budget got smaller. This season was indoors most of the time, with no civilians and no big moments. In Season 2, we had a dream sequence of Homelander lasering down a whole demonstration of people in just a small scene somewhere in between. We got nothing like that here in the final. “Scorched Earth” didn’t happen. Not even close. A fight in a city with 1-2 buildings collapsing, people dying around them while our group tries to stop Homelander would have been a better final than this Oval office thing we got.
You seemed interested in the Vought Rising spin-off in 5x08 (never happened of course). I kinda lost interest in it because The Boys Season 5 spent half its runtime on older supes to advertise that instead of developing a better story to finish the show. I have the feeling the first two seasons of Vought Rising will be great, but then they’ll spend the following two or three seasons advertising the next spin-off in that universe again, while ruining all the storylines they had built up before. I could be wrong, of course, but I’ll wait until Vought Rising is finished before I even dare to watch it.
Yeah I’m gonna do the same. I will wait for all the seasons to be out before I even think about watching the spin off. I don’t have faith they will land the ending of that show either.
But.. I could’ve sworn I saw .. I’m crazy? I swear I saw episode 8 uploaded. Idk man.. something spooky is going on (O_O)
the biggest criticism i have of this season is how Soldier boy's thought process inconsistently changes every 10 minutes. It's like the writers just wanted to get him involved in some way and kept making up random reasons which have no correlation to each other for every scene.
He returned in Season 5 because it was easier to advertise the new spin-off with him. He wasn’t needed here because he literally did nothing for the plot. The virus and V1 were just dropped like they were nothing. They could have spent all of Season 4 turning Kimiko into a Soldier Boy instead of looking for the virus. Introducing this random solution two hours before the end credits of the show was really bad.
