1:00 - American History X?
The line of succession as this point goes: Baelor; Baelor's sons Valarr and Matarys (the latter hasn't appeared on the show); Baelor's brothers Aerys, who is childless, and Rhaegel (neither has appeared on the show); Rhaegel's son Aelor; Maekar; Maekar's sons Aerion and Daeron; then Egg. (Maekar's third son Aemon — yes, that Aemon — has forfeited his claim to the throne by becoming a maester.) There are also some daughters mixed in there. It's unclear if they would inherit over a male heir below them in the line of succession.
i hope they read this or learn that Eggs brother is Maester Aemon from GoT
I guess the one thing I'm not getting is why Egg wouldn't be able to simply refute Daeron's accusation. Is Egg's testimony worthless just because of his age? Daeron is a drinker and known for being unreliable and dishonorable - why is he able to lie with impunity while Egg knows the truth and continues to serve as Dunk's squire in the trial? When Dunk asks him why he lied, he says "I had to say something when my father asked me where Egg had gone." That just sounds weak. Seems like a plot defect they hoped we wouldn't notice. And that's fine, the show is amazing.
That almost makes total sense - but, if it was all about the public image of the Dragon House you’d think Egg would be prohibited from associating with his kidnapper once Daeron’s accusation had been made. Instead, we have Egg (very publicly and obviously) serving as Dunk’s squire in the trial of seven. How is that not injurious to the Targaryen’s public image?
This show is so incredibly efficient at making you care about characters you've just met. The first time we see Steffon he's a fucking asshole, then in his next scene we fall in love with this seemingly prickly but honorable man....then he swings back to being a fucking asshole lol. The wonders a competent script and excellent actors can achieve.
Episode of the year so far, imo. It's honestly a bit unfair for this show to have the Thrones theme in its back-pocket to bust out in a moment like that. Brilliant stuff. (Shame about the (really bad) ADR on Baelor's big "I will take Ser Duncan's side!" line though.) It's a small moment in the episode, but I'm fascinated by the way Baelor reminds Egg that "the septons say we must love our brothers". He has three of his own, after all. I don't get the impression that he hates Maekar (like Egg does Aerion) but it really speaks to the complexities that must exist in the family. George wrote this story before he invented the Blackfyre Rebellion, but it's an added dimension to Baelor's decision here: The Targaryens just finished fighting a civil war among themselves, and this trip to Ashford is, on some level, a PR stunt to show that the crown is strong and unified... Until Baelor literally takes side against his brother and his nephews in favour of Dunk. That is a *significant* choice.
Like it's such simple, straightfoward writing (exceuted beautifully obvi) to have Baelor not answer when Dunk asks "Don't all knights make the same oath" then bring it back with him riding to the rescue at the end. "This man protected the innocent, as all true knights must," referring to Duncan and of course, himself protecting Duncan as well. We know that Baelor has been a brave warrior and that his reputation for nobility is probably earned, but perhaps this is the first time in a while he's been really challenged to live up to it and he answers the call.
Tony Soprano did that thing of knocking the guy teeth using a balcony
I was so scared this show was gonna suck. I adored these novellas and was prepared for disappointment. This is even better on a rewatch, that bald kid should At the very least get an Emmy nomination, little dude oozes charisma. Long days and pleasant nights!
also I understand that due to the quickness of the episode many didn't get it but the smith, steely Pate is not one of the seven Champions on Dunkan's side. The Seven are: 1. Ser Duncan the tall (Dunk) 2. Bailor Breakspear Targaryen (my sweet summer child Milena) 3. Lyonel Baratheon aka "the laughing storm" 4. Ser Raymun Fossoway of the Green apple 5. Ser Robin Rysling (the Maddest knight) 6. Ser Humphrey Hardying, the guy that Aerion killed his horse and broke his leg in the Joust 7. Ser Humphrey Beesbury, brother-in-law of Hardying (and auramaxxer in the next 2 episodes)
A truly remarkable episode that is the epitome of the GOT universe to me, and why this universe and all its dynamic stories and characters are truly great. George's genius for bringing this world to life is impeccable. That classic music with Baelor coming out had me in tears as well. Also it was shown a little in this episode but not a lot so I thought I would add a little context but Egg does NOT hate his family, he hates his Brother Aerion only. He loves the rest of his family, including his father. Baelor and Maekar (Egg's Dad) are two brothers that love each other as well and do not hate each other. Aerion though is a demon child, which is why he is hated amongst his brothers, lol.
The shit gag in the first episode when the music is about to hit is worth it alone for this moment. PEAK 😮💨
On the surface the show is already incredible, but there’s so many hidden parallels and themes and dialogue between the characters that are so layered and beautiful. Truly one of my favourite season of television ever
This is my favorite season of anything in this universe and this episode is my favorite episode
Tony soprano was the one who knocked out a guy’s teeth on a step. It was in the final season. The guy who got too friendly with Meadow.
I love the idea that this is the first time Baelor has been *challenged* to do the right thing. I think he prides himself in being honorable, well-read, and competent (like how he takes extra care to remember a random hedge knight from 15 years ago). But we see his pragmatic nature when he essentially tells Dunk that only a knight of royal blood can stand against Aerion to defend an innocent, and we see him faced with Dunk’s simple “don’t all knights swear the same oaths?”. I think it completely disarms him, and makes him disregard any objections he would’ve had about fighting for Dunk (like not undermining the unity of the Targaryen family when accusations of “inciting revolt” are being made by one member.) Dunk isn’t just good, he inspires good men to be better.
No my friend you dont understand the true reason behind Baelor Action, he is a honorouable and a true knight but also is a King, he think like a king, this action. It's for the people, to show that the people should respect the Targaryens because they fight for the right side, they fight for what is right. This is a political movement at its finest. You minimize someone like Baelor who, up to that point, is not only more honorable and intelligent than Duncan, but is a true ruler. Duncan isn't inspiring him; he's giving him the opportunity to do the right thing and, in the process, win over the people, and although he died, he succeeded.
The guy with the broken leg is the knight whose horse aerion impaled in the previous episode
I love when Lola says “he’s gonna laugh his way through this battle” about Lyonel Baratheon because he literally does do that in the book lol! He’s not nicknamed “the laughing storm” for no reason! Also the curb stomping you guys are trying to remember in the beginning happens in the sopranos lol.
One of the best episodes across the ASOIAF verse, ep 5 also very good
To me, this episode single-handily cemented this season as one of the best pieces of fiction I've ever watched. It's literally a perfect episode. I tried to think of any negative I could and I came up with nothing, everything it tries to do it delivers to perfection.
For the discussion in the intro, I remember tony doing that to a guy in the sopranos after Meadow was threatened
What an amazing moment that shows the power of restraint in story telling.
I’m loving the Japan trip, take your time girls 😭😭
The scene you were refering to in the intro is from the sopranos i think 🤔
Yes you are right where Tony breaks they guys teeth who said something about meadow and she told her dad… obv Tony then confronted him and did what you saw last ep. He put his teeth against something and curb stomped him😭brutal then and brutal in this show so glad they didn’t do that to dunk tho
When that GOT theme hits for real this episode… full body CHILLS!
I really could go on and on about each scene and performance, but I want to shout out Finn Benett as Aerion, again making such a good little annoying villain literally busting everyone’s nuts. Then, Sam Spruell as Maekar a really nice comedic bit, making his best Stannis impression, being exasperated with his sons. And finally, Henry Aston as Daeron the drunkard really making him a haunting portrait of a regular man overwhelmed by the irregular powers that fate (or GRRM) bestowed on him, a sad addict that cannot be trusted. On the scenes I love Dunkan’s introspection of his new sigil and steely Pate’s retort. The shield as both a symbol of life and death, incumbent upon the viewer to find the meaning and draw either strength or weakness. I also appreciate how overtly emotional Dunk is over the prospect of a trial, showing not the traditionally “manly” lack of emotion and having Pate a large tough looking smith comfort him.
My favorite episode of the season, and one of my favorites in the entire HBO westeros universe! Every moment has such emotional weight, every performance was flawless, and the themes about vows, knighthood and the human heart in conflict with itself that George’s work is about! The final scene with Baelor taking Dunk’s side is one of the classic scenes in all of TV and proof that tropes, when done well, are actually extremely effective in finding emotion!
Lola we might need you to stay in the Japan servers forever
I'm giving a heart purely for the thumbnail. I really want to catch up and watch this spin off.
