A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 1x03 Reaction

some points on the things you touched on: 1. Killing the horse in the Joust is considered extremely disgraceful for a knight. In the books it is said that Aerion gets disqualified for doing that to Humphrey Hardying and gives his horse. 2. Funny you mentioned it, Egg has literally 10 people ahead of him in the line of succession at the start of the season and the novellas (I assume akotsk isn't changing/redcing the Targ line). Reminder that Egg's father Maekar has two older brothers briefly referenced in episode 2, Aerys (not the Mad King) and Rhaegel. 3. Lord Ashford overspent on the tourney we see here, that he threw to celebrate his daughter's 13th birthday. Yeah very bad idea for a Lord of a small town to throw such a big event (the entrety of the big nobility of the south is there, including the Targaryen princes) 4. Someone who remembered the show really really well could know where some of these characters will end up. I am not saying more but I guess you will figure some things out in the next seasons.
petition for lola and milena to watch the outtakes (posted by HBO) after they finish the series!
The whole tournament is a birthday party for Lord Ashford's daughter, the costs of the event Dunk is at right now is what they want to win back
i feel like a breakdown of grrm's world will clear things up re: how much do the readers know about dunk & egg? (non-spoilers, but i will be mentioning how much time the novellas cover so if you don't want to even know that, then skip number 2) 1- there's nuggets of information about the characters of this time period in westeros in the original novels! (for example, aerion brightflame is mentioned once or twice ) not much, just a few references. but they do reveal major life events for these characters. this happens in the show too, but i doubt you'll remember them. joffrey has been spoiling hotd and akotsk through his dialogue for 15 years now lol. 2- in the dunk & egg novellas, we only cover a short amount of time, about three years. and while grrm has many more novellas planned, he hasn't published any of them so we don't know what they get up to for many years. until.... 3- grrm has two other books. "a world of ice and fire: the untold history of westeros and game of thrones" AND "fire and blood". these are written as history books, so while they DO chronical the major events of this time-period , we don't have much context, detail, or even confirmation on which historical accounts are canon or not. this DOES mean that we know which characters ascend the throne, how they die, and what they were generally known to be like. so basically, most of us have been "spoiled" on what happens with dunk & egg through a fictional history book lol. but there's a lot of mystery on what *exactly* happened. i doubt they'll cover all of that in the show, so maybe one day you guys will want to just read up on it too.
Yeah, in the show specifically there is *less* lore about these characters -- that's just the nature of an adaptation -- but Dunk and Egg's futures are both explicitly "spoiled" at least once. An interesting aspect of the novellas (and the show) is that those futures aren't meant to be mysteries, exactly. Martin expects the reader to be familiar with what happens to the characters later on. That's what makes these "origin stories" interesting.
this takes place around 100 years before GOT. the brother Raymund mentions to Dunk that was so useless and sent to be a maester is actually Aemond Targaryen from the main show. When Aemond is dying he calls out for his brother, Egg.
Not trying to nitpick but it’s Aemon in case anyone is confused
I love Dunk and Egg's relationship and dynamic
“His story about being an orphan” actually when they first meet and Dunk realizes the inkeeper isn’t Eggs mom (Egg said his mom is dead) he asks him if he’s an Orphan but Egg replies by asking Dunk “Are you?”. Later when Egg reveals he lives in King’s Landing Dunk asks if he’s from Fleabottom (the poorest part of the city) to which Egg just says “No.”
The only "lie" he tells is in this episode, about knowing his father. And of course you can interpret that as Egg saying that he doesn't *know* his father, i.e. they have a strained or distant relationship.
I like how the show sets up the lore and politics. The song (as a kid we thought we were sooo funny with similar songs) was a funny way to integrate the Blackfyres, which will become prominent in the next seasons, so as they don’t come out of nowhere but also something that he would have picked up as a piece of Targaryen propaganda. Also Raymun Fossoway railing about the Dragon house is a good reminder of the unhappy union the dynasty forged the seven kingdoms in and also a reminder that compared to HotD they are in a much weaker position without their dragons and those grudges can be aired more openly and carry more risk on the survival of the Targaryens.
Is Invincible tomorrow or the day after?
Ser not Sire.
Another great episode. I appreciate the fact that they took their time to show once again that this is the closest time to the good times in Westeros. The greenery of the scenery, the pavilion, the tourney, people having fun (and Dunk & Egg inventing the ham & egg sandwich). In the end the brutality of the power structure comes back to the forefront, through Aerion, played wonderfully by Finn Benett.
such peak
Egg in his boss activities
