It would actually be pretty fun to watch the original 2 episodes of this Astro Boy arc (or just the first episode) after we finished Pluto, so you can better appreciate what Urasawa did with it. Episodes are on YouTube: https://youtu.be/rEg0SUL95_8?is=oOVBTODRWq0zyM3l https://youtu.be/cdBJCisg-q0?is=tn39nWXERs8RdZhz

Girls Gesicht is one of the 7. This isn’t a spoiler your translation on ep 1 with the convo between brau1589 and Gesicht just confused you. When brau1589 said “present company included “ he was just referring to Gesicht and not of himself. My translation brau says “including you there are 6 more” clearly stating Gesicht is one of the 7.

POTENTIAL SPOILERY QUESTION Okay so im rewatching this with them bc ive forgotten a lot of the mystery/plot points of the show and I noticed in my ep 1 translation the robot Brau1589 says to Gesicht "Including you, there are six more" directly stating that Gesicht is one of the 7 advanced robots. Its not meant to be a mystery. But in their translation it said "...present company included" which confused them into thinking its possibly not him. Now im not sure if my translation is too clear cut/kind of revealing or if theirs just confused them. They seem to be questioning the idea of him being one of the 7 could be a revealed at some point but I feel like we should tell them if its not meant to be a mystery?

“Hmm, yeah… I can tell from your review that you guys are definitely picking up on some things. Some themes are more on the nose than others. It’s crazy how fictional yet contemporary this anime feels. I don’t know if, in my lifetime, we’ll see AI and robots feel like these characters. At the same time, I’m a bit afraid of what Pandora’s box could be opened if we ever get to the point of considering AI and robots the same as humans.

To give you a bit of context: Pluto, as already mentioned in the first comment (under episode 1), is based on a story arc from Astro Boy, with the world being reinterpreted by Urasawa. In Astro Boy, the status of robots is not presented as a clear, linear development, but varies depending on the story. In many cases, robots are treated as property. They are created for specific purposes, belong to humans, and can be bought or sold. At the same time, some robots already participate in society to a limited extent. Atom is sold to a circus during this era, although he is able to move on from there after some time. He becomes a recognized and protected figure. He is able to convince people through his moral decisions and empathy. However, his role is symbolic. He is not the trigger for societal change. In later stories, robots are more frequently shown holding jobs, being integrated into institutions, and participating in everyday life. Nevertheless, they are not equal to humans. They are subject to legal and technical restrictions, and some continue to be treated as property, whether as property of humans or as property of institutions and companies. This results more in a form of structural inequality than true equality. Pluto continues this concept, introducing robot laws and adoption rights, allowing some robots to live more freely than some humans. Nevertheless, not all are completely free. When the war was declared, many highly advanced robots that were not originally designed for combat were used as weapons or repurposed for military use. The targeted construction of weapons-of-mass-destruction robots was restricted or controlled by the equivalent of the UN in Pluto. After the war, robots received more recognition, but still not complete equality.

Girls, please be careful on Twitter. The entire next Avatar movie just leaked, and there are spoilers everywhere. The official release is still 6 months away, so you might want to mute some key words if you haven't already.

“Gesicht” means “face". The pronunciation is difficult for non-German speakers because the “ch” sound doesn’t really exist in English. Maybe this helps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQKjqwCZCE4
