Real good movie, I think this is my 3rd time seeing it. It's gotten a little too much glaze as "the best movie I've seen!" when it came out, but I still definitely like it 😁

With a hit vampire movie under your belts, wouldn't now be a great time to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the next long show after Mad Men?

L
La Baanga · April 7, 2026

Outside of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" I've never really been that drawn to vampire media, but dammit if my two favorite theater experiences last year weren't this movie and Nosferatu.

C
Clay F · April 7, 2026

Nosferatu (2024) is stunningly good, and I am not really a horror movie guy.

“It was not subtle at all, I think it would be difficult to watch it and not understand the meaning behind it” *Ben Shapiro boss music starts playing* In related news, I love hearing about the issues and almost vaudeville disasters happening on his “anti-woke” Sinners project with Jonathon Majors

This was Miles Caton's (Sammie's) first movie role! Hence why you haven't seen him. An incredible accomplishment he completely blew me away.

Slim telling the story of the lynching of his friend still remains one of the most haunting scenes to me. The background noise as he was telling us without showing us made my skin crawl when I first heard it. He also had one of my favorite lines in the whole movie, "Blues wasn't forced on us like their religion, no we brought this with is from home." I grew up in a very christian household and this was always like an unspoken truth that was never acknowledged so to hear it said so plainly in this movie was refreshing and sparked many good conversations amongst my family.

N
Nyeisha Melvina Clark · April 7, 2026

What I loved about Remmick is that nothing he said was necessarily wrong, and he truly believed in everything he was saying, and while it is true that the Irish and Black Americans have a very similar history of oppression , there was still a very big difference in the inevitable outcome of these two histories, which even Remmick himself knew and used to his advantage when he first attacked the white couple, and in the end, despite not being wrong, he very much still was a cult leader, lol. But the incorporation of Rocky Road to Dublin dance sequence was a stroke of genius.

N
Nyeisha Melvina Clark · April 7, 2026

So many themes and layers to this movie. My most favorite is that it showcases that no matter what your culture is or religion, music is universal. I LOVED the one shot of the evolution of music, mainly black music but it also included many other cultures in there as well. The entire cast was phenomenal but Delroy Lindo (Slim) and Wunmi Mosako (Annie) and of course Michael B. Jordan were my absolute favorites. Annie though was my favorite, I loved how every time she spoke, everybody listened and trusted her and no one belittled her. She ultimately was the reason they survived for as long as they did, which was amazing.

Something you may not have noticed without knowing segregation history, the Chow family had a general store on both sides of the street. If you watch the scene in town closely, Black people were on one side, white people were on the other side. The Chows weren't restricted from mingling so they could sell to both white and Black customers, but not at the same location. Hence two stores and their going back and forth between them.

Lots of incredible stuff in this film -- huge fan of that "Wild Mountain Thyme" glamour scene, personally -- but I'm sorry, the big set piece where the vampires attack the bar is nonsense. Action chaos that runs totally counter to the emotional realism the film spent the past hour building for the characters. On paper, this is the perfect movie to marry Ryan Coogler's thematic concerns and big budget sensibilities, but the man went full Marvel Mode at the end here.

Old Sammie is played by a famous Chicago Blues musician named Buddy Guy. If you're ever in Chicago, stop by Buddy Guy's for a good time.

J
JBK405 · April 7, 2026

This movie is unironically, no-caveat, BRILLIANT. To answer your question, Miles Caton -- who played Sammie -- is a singer. This is his first acting role, and that's his real voice. He didn't know how to play the guitar before he took this role, but he learned it so that it he could authentically play EVERYTHING for his character. Nothing dubbed in by somebody else. "Old Sammie" is played by Buddy Guy, who is a real life Blues LEGEND. One of the last remaining originators who lived the life that this movie talks about. He actually was a sharecropper like Sammie, and escaped that life by learning music. I didn't know about him until I'd seen this movie, but I did a deep dive afterwards and he is amazing. Sammie's power that Remmick wanted wasn't a literal magic power, it was the metaphorical power of music. Remmick thought that if Sammie would sing the songs of Remmick's people, that Remmick would feel connected to them again as if he was really with them. We saw it happen 'for real' at the end when Stack & Mary visited Sammie at his club: When Sammie sang for them, we got flashbacks to when they were all happy together. They felt like they did back when they were happy. That's what Remmick wanted. The music throughout the film is just perfect, and incorporated into the story so well. I don't claim to Understand the Blues the same way somebody would in the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s, but by gum I can feel that THEY feel it. It hit the concept of race-in-America perfectly. The Irish were an oppressed people in Ireland, and continued being oppressed in America, but their oppression was very different than the oppression faced by African Americans. In the mid-20th century there was a concerted effort by Irish-Americans to 'become white' through assimilation and political/economic actions, and that involved collectively stepping on black people to lift themselves up. So here comes Remmick, talking about how he just wants to join in with the party and share his music with them and take their music in turn, but he doesn't care if THEY want to share with him at all. He was kicked off his ancestor's land just like everybody else was, but he's still doing the same thing all over again. I saw somebody else say it perfectly: "you can be oppressed, and still promote and maintain the very same systems of oppression onto other marginalized people." Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Mary, really is 1/8 black. But Hailee Steinfeld, real person, is not herself black. She doesn't claim to be black. She's never tried to say "I'm 1/8 black so I know what it's like". But Mary, the CHARACTER, is black, despite being white passing. Because she was raised in the community, because she has roots in the culture, because she has LIVED a life. If she was ever outed she would be treated just like any other black person in the South. And she's definitely had a different life than all of the other characters since she passes, but NOBODY else gets to say that she isn't "black enough". Delta Slim...oh can we ever say enough about Delta Slim? The man, the legend. He didn't just talk the talk, he walked the walk. He said they'd have to go through him to get to Sammie, and he MEANT it. Because he saw in Sammie every other child who ever wanted to learn the blues, and wanted to make the connection with other people that is so impossible to make. For the question of where the vampire rules come from, the "standard" rules for vampires are actually a mish-mash of dozens of different myths and local traditions from all throughout the world. For example, the idea that wooden stakes are lethal to vampires come from a tradition of using a stake to actually nail a corpse to the floor of the coffin to prevent them from getting out if they were suspected of being a vampire. Garlic as a vampire repellant comes from its use as a way to repel 'evil' in many folk traditions and folk healings. Silver likewise is a general-purpose evil repellant. During the 20th century all the different mythologies were blended together when movies and books picked from them all and had worldwide appeal.

Remick is easily my favorite character. And I thought the actor was great. So I looked up his interviews hoping to hear his insights. Unfortunately, like Robert De Niro who is an absolute giant of cinema and is famously a shy and shite interviewee, this guy is rather uneasy with interviews and doesn't have much insight to share. A shame.

I watched this 2 weeks ago after i voted for it in the poll. I liked the first half a lot. But the abrupt change in tone and the introduction of supernatural elements to a grounded movie midway through movies is never something i like usually. Had the same problem with a certain Tarantino movie as well (won't say the name so i won't spoil it for anyone).

c
cosmotron · April 7, 2026

I think there's a lot of interesting thematic stuff going on with the supernatural elements as well, though if it doesn't work for you that's fair enough.

The ‘I Lied To You’ sequence is one of the best moments in recent movie history, the centrepiece of this film and it wouldn’t surprise me if the film was built around that one idea, it’s such a clear peak/highlight

I haven't been to the theater in ages but every time I watch a good film I think "dammit why didn't I watch this in the theater?"

J

I watched late too and I so badly wanted to go the theater just to experience that scene on IMAX. I would have paid just for those few minutes. The first time I saw that scene at home, it brought literal tears to my eyes.

I saw this movie in IMAX 70mm in San Francisco opening night and the director Ryan Coogler surprised us before the screening. Hes from the Bay Area and told us he wanted to show love to the theatre he grew up going to….Sinners is easily a top 5 cinematic experience for me, a true nerdy core memory 🥲
