Mad Men 7x02 Reaction

Love that shot of Don and Sally in the car, with the dirt on the window separating them. His lies! Beautiful.
lol cutler giving joan a promotion is about him courting allies. he doesn't care about joan. since last season we see him conspiring to slowly oust or minimize the scdp side of the agency. (the whole agency name change was strategically suggested to distract don and roger from this and keep them happy). joan thinks rogers reaction is about her (as do l&m) but its really about him realizing what culter is doing
Peggy's storyline feels like something out of a sitcom. I laughed out loud when she asked Shirley to throw the flowers away. I can imagine a Seinfeld exchange - "Well was there a card?" "There was no card Jerry, no card! They were on my desk and there was no card!" I find stuff like that very endearing.
"I'm so many people" is a sleeper pick for the best line of the series. Think of all of Don/Dicks identities throughout the show.
Roger is a person that doesn't know the names of the people who work on his company and who has no empathy or remorse about firing people. I'm not surprised he also acts a bit cold with the people who has close personal relationships with.
You could probably argue that Mad Men plays the "contemporary pop song into credits" card too often... but when it works, it works. One of my favourite moments in the entire series -- a perfect song for a perfect moment. I've said it before, but Kiernan Shipka turning into such a strong actress was a godsend for this series. You just don't see a parent/child relationship on television given this much time to ebb and flow and evolve. What a gift to watch it with Don & Sally. "Don't let got of my hand now the darkness has gone. This will be our year, took a look time to come." Oh and Joan sticking Meredith on Lou's desk is such a funny choice. I know she knifed Don on the way out, but she doesn't like his replacement very much either.
FYI, "kike" is a slur for Jewish people. It's The Big One in the USA/English speaking world. Roger is telling the story as a funny anecdote because it means he was mistaken for Jewish, and he says it must be the hat he was wearing. He (obviously) doesn't feel offfended on behalf of anybody who the term might actually apply to. McCann Erickson is the BIG advertising company that has tried to poach Don several times since the first season. He's always refused because it's a "sausage factory" (i.e. it makes bland products with no craftmanship of unique talents), and like we saw last episode Don really craves being involved in the work artistically. It's one of the Real Life advertising agencies that pops up in the show, and still exists today. Lou Avery's remark when he first told Joan to transfer Dawn, that he knows Joan can't fire her so just move her away from him, was a remark that they need to keep her employed because she's black. He's not wrong that the SC&P partners have explicitly said that they need to keep their black employees to give the appearance of EEO, but the way he SAID it was extremely offensive because it implies that that is the ONLY reason not to fire Dawn. That's why Dawn snapped back at him instead of continuing to Smile like she always does, because she knows that she is good at her job and doesn't want to accept the insult. Yes, Dawn got a promotion at the end. If you remember, last season when Joan caught Harry's secretary forging her timecard with Dawn's help, the episode ended with Joan putting Dawn in charge of additional office responsibilities. I pointed out at the time that even though this was a punishment -- more work with no extra pay -- it was also a step towards future recognition and promotions. Joan's actions then showed that she had her eyes on Dawn, and now it's paying off. I saw a remark online that the exchange between Dawn and Shirlery in this episode where they call each other by their own names "is one of the most economical jokes in the series; it says so much with so little, and it instantaneously evokes an appreciable range of emotion (amusement, frustration, sadness, the comfort of commiseration, etc.). " That hit the nail right on the head.
It also shows how times have changed. Can you imagine your boss telling a story like that to your other boss across the office the way Roger told Lou? XD
Wasn't Jim engaging in voyeurism non-consensually between Stan and Frank's daughter (who may or may not be underage) who Jim was told to look after? Wanted to get rid of Ginsburg when he was absolutely in the wrong re. US' engagement in Vietnam (very petulant). So stanning Jim Cutler? No thank you Am I missing anything up until this point in the show re. Jim?
Tbf, Ginsberg was acting unhinged in that moment. It's a workplace, you can't just be screaming at your boss and calling them a fascist lol. It doesn't matter who is right, it's just not appropriate.
Hmm I can't say I agree in regards to Roger's character writing. To me it all seems very natural and he has been plenty fleshed out. I can understand where Lola's coming from but I can't say I agree
Roger's line could be read positively, like "You're moving on up and you don't need to ask for anyone's approval." I don't think he was necessarily implying that he doesn't approve, just that it literally doesn't and shouldn't matter either way. Idk maybe I'm just a Roger apologist lol
Jim is so fun to watch. I always forget how late in the show he becomes a character, because for someone only really introduced for the final season he's got such a presence. He's already wormed his way into seniority on Chevy through Bob, now in one episode he's put Pete and Roger in their place, got Cooper on his side by appealing to his pragmatic business sense, got Joan on his side by promoting her, moved Dawn into a position with more responsibility but less creative access where she can no longer keep Don in the loop and thus freeze him out even further. And he did it all without anyone even knowing he did it.
Don cannot comprehend that someone could genuinely love him. "I was surprised that you ever loved me" -Don to Betty in s3. The look of shock on his face when Sally said it to him is heartbreaking. He truly feels at his core that he's unlovable. Perhaps changing this foundational belief about himself is key to his growth. After a whole season of rock bottom, it's so refreshing to finally see some positivity for Don's character. Last episode when he opened the shade on the airplane window and his face was illuminated by the sun (after rejecting an offer for sex/another affair), that's what it feels like. This will be our year, took a long time to come
And it's so sweet how this all happens on Valentine's Day
Luckiest show runner in history. Matt couldn't have possibly known what an actor Kiernan would develop into when he cast her. One of the many reasons I love this season so much.
She even looks exactly like the love child of Jon Hamm and January Jones it really is uncanny
‘The warmth of your love’s like the warmth of the sun And this will be our year Took a long time to come Don't let go of my hand Now darkness has gone This will be our year Took a long time to come’ Maybe my favourite needle drop in the show
