It's been a while since I watched a show and felt empty in the end. (Actually this was a re-watch, but I had forgotten so much.) Great shows have that effect, I guess.

Well since Johan has 5 heads left, he can spare a few more head wounds.

I knew this show was practically made for you both. I enjoyed every single reaction and discussion immensely and I'm so sad it's over 😭😭😭💔 praying for that live action remake one day because Monster deserves it, and so that you can get a second chance to watch it :' )

Monster is one of the few anime that feels like it can be done right in a live action, now that you mention it!

Really glad you guys reacted to this. It's been a really nice experience revisiting this series in the last how many months with you guys. Still probably my top 3 favourite anime of all time.

I'm not really on board with most of the writing decisions in these final few episodes, but I don't wanna start a flame war. Overall, I'd probably give the show a 7.5/10. Very engaging mystery & compelling villain, but the plot is a bit too convoluted, fragmented, and reliant upon contrivances & extreme coincidences for my taste. Now, if I had felt as though the ending was amazing, then that might've been able to mask those criticisms, but alas, it didn't for me.

Ahhh creating 40 1 dollar accounts to vote monster in the haikyuu vs monster poll was worth it!!!

Second time watching this show all the way through, and it didn't really improve upon rewatching. Cumbersome, heavy-handed, boring and with glacial pacing. The ending is kinda lame, too. Anime is just such a disappointment nearly every time, even one like this that is more reserved with regards to all the typical anime tropes and nonsense...

What are your favorite shows/novels? I'm not doing a gotcha. Monster is one of my favorite anime, but I can see how one can feel the way you did about it. It intrigues me.

I'm about to start this since they finished it and heard there are multiple versions. Can someone tell me which version I'm supposed to watch and what the differences are?

R
Robert Dirk H. · February 18, 2026

They watched an up-scaled 4k version from the archive. You also can use the Netflix version or some illegal stuff like from hianime. They just got the best version with good subtitles. But they watched 72 on Netflix!

Thank you for your reaction to "MONSTER." Naoki Urasawa, the creator of “MONSTER” has produced many excellent works. In Japan, "MASTER KEATON" stands as a work of comparable popularity to “MONSTER.” Unfortunately, only part of the original manga has been adapted into an anime. It is a heartwarming drama centered around Keaton, an archaeologist, insurance investigator, former soldier, and detective. I'd be happy if you could see it someday.

it’s true that there were serious plans at one point to adapt Monster into a live-action project, but nothing has been made yet and nothing is currently confirmed as happening. I think Guillermo Del Toro was supposed to be one behind this.

R
Robert Dirk H. · February 18, 2026

Yeah, HBO messed up. Let’s hope we’ll get another chance soon. I’d really love to see this story in a live-action format. And if more Urasawa works get pushed, maybe we’ll also get an adaptation of 20th Century Boys? :D

Jack SV · February 18, 2026

For me the empty bed kinda represents the idea of the “Monster” finally gone since Johan’s whole identity was challenged once he learns his real name.. at least that’s how I took the ending. For me it always come down as to what can trauma do to children and how these things shape their core values. And yes, Milena is right and I think you girls said this in the past but this “anime” doesn’t feel like one because is not over the top and it doesn’t have any anime generic traits.

R
Robert Dirk H. · February 18, 2026

Monster is the least "anime-like" anime out there, I think. I don’t know if there is another story like it. I would maybe say Rainbow Nisha, but I have the feeling you can’t really adapt that story into live action because you simply can’t film those scenes with child actors. It just goes too far in so many ways. If both of them ever start watching it, I wouldn’t be angry with them if they stopped after episode 2, because the story is heartbreaking. And it will take a lot of episodes, until they come close to the Rainbow.

One of my favorite series of all time, Theres a fair amount of foreshadowing in this show, but I think the biggest instance of it is in episode 49 where Johan disguised as Nina talks to Milosh and sends him to the red light district. The conversation Johan and Milosh have is really worth watching with a new perspective. It’s the most candid conversation Johan has ever had with anyone. It’s his honest beliefs and justification for everything he’s done, not simply Johan tormenting the boy as it would appear at first. In particular the change of expression in Johan when the boy mentions that his mother would recognize him is subtle foreshadowing for the ending where he questions whether his mother could tell him and Nina apart, and whether he or Nina was even wanted.

As a doctor who always has thoughts about which people "deserve" treating this show has helped me a lot with its themes. I'm really glad you girls also experienced it. Its not common in anime that a show keeps the same level of quality the whole way through. This show is extremely consistent. Thank you for the reactions. See you in the next "cursed" show.

The last part with Johan, Tenma, the music, the flashback, the voice acting... It's masterful. This show really shows how tragic and beatiful the human nature can be. Arigato, Urasawa-sensei!

My final thoughts were already prepared. JOHAN'S END | For me it was perfect that they left it open to the audience's interpretation. Some believe he died after years in a coma, some believe the bed was a representation of the emptiness Johan was, and some believe he escaped and continued living. Hes my favorite character in the story and because of the love and empathy I feel for him, I've always preferred to believe that he heard Tenma's words about being loved by his mother and having a real name, and that this could bring him something close to peace. So, regardless of whether he escaped or died, the fact that he heard those words makes me happy. But I prefer to believe that he may have escaped and somehow managed to live isolated somewhere, I would love that version so I carry it with me. It's part of my hypocrisy, and I always acknowledge it when I talk about Johan, because yes, he deserved an ending in prison or even to be killed for everything he did (just as I wished for Franz, Petar, Baby, etc.), but I wouldn't feel happy and I don't intend to deny it. THE MOTHER My final conclusion was that she did indeed play an important role in what Johan became. Her hatred for Bonaparta and her desire for revenge were always more related to the fact that he killed the twins' father, the man she loved, and not so much to her own children. This was imposed on Johan when he was a child, not because of what he, his sister, and his mother went through, but because of what his father suffered. But my feelings towards her are very mixed, because while I don't feel she tried to save them or give them a different worldview, it was shown in episode 66 that she begged for the children have names and that she knew it was important, and now it's shown again that she actually thought about their names. The possible difference in feelings she had for her two children, making Johan dress like his sister (which helped confuse him regarding identity) are points that prove she wasn't a good mother to either of them, and that's the guilt she carries. But in the end, she's also a victim.

We finally finished Monster, so it’s time to wrap up what we got. Like Franz Bonaparta said himself, the mother being forced to choose which child would go to the Red Rose Mansion was itself part of the experiment. In that sense, it didn’t really matter which child was taken. All three of them were part of the experiment. The child taken would be raised and psychologically conditioned in the Red Rose Mansion, while the child left behind would still be shaped indirectly through trauma, isolation, identity confusion and stories like The Nameless Monster. The mother was also taken away [Episode 44], but to a different place, likely connected to Bonaparta personally. As mentioned in Another Monster, she was heavily psychologically manipulated. Her backstory about her own dead twin sister Anna created an identity trauma that Bonaparta exploited. [See my comments in 70 and 72] We don’t know exactly what happened afterward, but most fans believe she eventually escaped. However, instead of saving her children, she ended up abandoning them, likely because she was mentally broken and unable to function as a mother anymore. Later, she seems to be hiding in a Catholic convent in southern France, where Kenzo Tenma eventually finds her. There are many theories about what happened in the exact moment when she had to choose which child would be sent to the Red Rose Mansion. One simple theory is that she tried to sabotage their plan by sending a girl, since a female future political leader might have seemed less useful to their goals. Another theory is that Johan was her favorite child, so she tried to protect him. According to this idea, she may have intentionally kept his identity ambiguous, so that if authorities were starting searching, they would look for a daughter rather than a son, giving him a better chance to hide or escape. That would also explain why she still bought boy clothes and a wig instead of letting his hair grow long. Others say she may not have fully known which twin she was pointing at in that moment. Because they were dressed alike and she was under extreme psychological stress, the choice itself may have been confused, impulsive or even subconscious rather than deliberate. Another theory, influenced by Another Monster, focuses on psychological trauma repetition. Since she carried deep guilt and identity conflict connected to her own dead twin sister, some fans believe she unconsciously reenacted that trauma. In this view, she initially pointed at Johan, then switched to Nina at the last second, either out of panic, instinct to protect him. Because the story intentionally leaves her motives ambiguous, none of these theories are fully confirmed. But one thing I want to mention: The mother studied biology and genetics at Brno University before becoming a victim of Franz Bonaparta’s experiments. The father of genetics, Gregor Mendel, is famous for his inheritance experiments. But what many don’t know is this: Gregor wasn’t his original name. When he entered the Augustinian Monastery of St. Thomas in Brno in 1843, he took the religious name Gregor, as was customary at the time. New monks often received a new name to mark their religious vocation and a new life in the order, symbolically erasing their past. His birth name was Johan. Therefore there exists the idea that Johan's real name is Gregor.

It's unbelievable to acknowledge that the end has truly arrived. That poll against Haikyuu seems like it was yesterday, the 10 months of waiting that felt like an eternity also seem like it wasn't that long ago, and now... it's over! It was truly a great journey girls, an amazing show with incredible characters and the best villain ever written in anime. My wait for your reactions was truly worth it. Thank you for the 74 incredible reactions and reviews.
