It's funny how the first thing LM mentioned in the discussion was that the part they enjoyed least was the action scenes, and yet people are still recommending JJK. In the future, people will be recommending Solo Leveling too, and anyone who disagrees will be met with, "hey they liked CSM so why not"

With the masterfull soundtrack from Kensuke Ushio on this, really makes me think... what would they think about Devilman Crybaby lol.

A

The music in this movie really was incredible. Even if you didn't like the movie (which I did like it), like Makima said, "at least the music was good". Kensuke Ushio is great. I don't think the movie would have been as outstanding as it is without his incredible work.

I will say i can understand if yall dont want them to watch JJK but good lord alot of y’all act wayyyy to pretentious about what makes a good anime *cough* Robert *cough*. I thought we left that elitist looking down on others stuff in the 2010s 😭 lets not go back.

"I thought we left that elitist looking down on others stuff in the 2010s 😭 lets not go back. " The majority of the anime community still peer pressures content creators into watching sub vs. dub when it literally doesn't matter which one you watch in.

Two days ago it was announced that MAPPA is currently producing the next arc of Chainsaw Man. It's most likely, then, that season 2 or a movie (the format hasn't been confirmed yet) will premiere in 2027. As for Vinland Saga Season 3 :( it's more difficult. MAPPA has many projects in development, so it's not a priority. Let's hope there's news next year; at the moment there are no leaks indicating that it's in development. The Vinland Saga manga ended this year, and I'd be very excited to see your reactions to what's still to be animated.

v
victória · December 23, 2025

this reaction is so good omg !!

K
Kendall Roy · December 23, 2025

Did they really believe that LM wouldn't like an anime where broken and traumatized children are manipulated by a government organization and, in the midst of it all, form friendships with each other, just because there's action added to it?

r
refo44 · December 23, 2025

Maybe they could skip all the boring action filler in the episodes but unfortunately that’s not the case with JJK. I enjoyed season 1 to some extent, and even Hidden Inventory, because for me JJK is just a stereotypical shonen but after that every episode gets worse. Another issue I have with JJK is that, even though it has some interesting characters, they almost completely lack character development. It feels like the only character growth comes from killing the characters. You can’t really compare it to CSM or HxH. JJK it’s more action oriented and closer to Cyberpunk Edgerunners and they didn’t like that anime much either

b
bondbond53 · December 23, 2025

I swear to God I love Chainsaw Man but its fans have the biggest little brother complex towards JJK I have ever seen in this medium. "We're not getting S2 CSM because of JJK" "They won't like JJK because it's all meaningless action" etc. Like genuinely miss me with this shit. MAPPA literally owns the CSM IP fully so all profits go to them from it. Do you not think they'd be invested in producing it as fast and with as much quality as possible? Leave JJK alone and focus on this story. So much unnecessary comments from fans of a show that were fighting in the previously with people that were saying CSM is gooner bait

S
Sam · December 23, 2025

Idk, judging by how they reacted to the action in this movie I just don’t see JJK hitting for them that much. Could be wrong tho

p
petitcorbeau · December 23, 2025

Okay so from what i've read we can expect season 2 in 2027 which is still in so long even though i understand why it takes time... but can they just drop everything else and focus on that and vinland saga?? I think i'm going to start the manga... Anyway, loved rewatching this movie with you and listening to your thoughts <3

D

Yeah I consider this a "weaker" arc in the series (still a 9/10) but the anime really elevated it to a 10/10 for me

p

Can't even be sad for monster I'm so excited!! But does that mean we're getting both monster and Andor tomorrow? I guess yes

M
MJ · December 23, 2025

This movie was amazing, unfortunately I didn’t get to watch it in theaters but I did watch it with my friends last week at my house so it was still a huge win for me. I love how it balanced the action and the characters. The story is very character driven which is what made me fall in love with it. I’m looking forward to season 2 whenever that is lol, Also Denji is my favorite, protect him at all cost.

M
MJ · December 23, 2025

Unfortunately Jujutsu Kaisen is too popular of a show for you two girls not to react to one day, don’t want that day to come but it will. I just hope you watch it so you can drop it half way through season 1 or 2 that way people stop recommending shows with no character writing and we can get it out of the way for an actual great show to replace it.

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

Season 1 still has dialogue, but when they will reached end of Season 2 they will probably be so tired of action just to get more action and less dialogue in Season 3. 🫣 I hope I'm wrong.

R
Rico · December 23, 2025

JJK will hold you over until csm season 2 👍

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

JJK is literally like the whole second half of this movie: Action, action, action, short emotional scene, action, action, end :D

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

Lola's statement that Makima is the greatest threat and that the Gun Devil could never get close to her is truer than she thinks. In Season 1, we literally saw the Gun Devil making deals with criminals to kill Makima on the train. If it didn't see Makima as a threat, why would it go to such extremes? Power and Beam are scared of her too. Reze, working with the Gun Devil, knows Makima and calls her an evil witch. She is extremly powerful.

As a manga reader of Vinland saga, the next arc is probably my favorite arc in the whole series. It sucks that we haven’t gotten any annoucment yet for season three. I wish mappa would just abandon all there other projects except for chainsaw man and Vinland so we could get them sooner😢

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

I think I prefer Arc 4 for Vinland Saga. If I would rank the story, then it would be probably like this: 1. Season 4 Part 1 2. Season 2 3. Season 3 Part 1 4. Season 1 5. Season 4 Part 2 6. Season 3 Part 2 Arc 3 Part 2 could easily improve alot with a few anime adaptation changes!

V
Vitor · December 23, 2025

Loved the reaction. There is so much to talk about in this movie. I love how surprisingly political CSM is, and this starts becoming clear in this arc. We already had clear commentary on gun violence, but now, with the introduction of the soviet union (which should already be extinct in the 90s), we get evidence that devils are being used as tools for governments thoughrout the world. The first shot after the opening is a flag of Japan and Reze's blood pool in the end perfercly forms the shape of Japan's flag as well. In this world, devils are obviously a problem, but i think is very realistic how governments seem to focus more on using the devils to gain more power than actually trying to solve the problems.

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

Yep, MAPPA’s production schedule is one of the worst in the whole industry. The management accepted so many important projects, and now there are so many things on their to-do list. Attack on Titan Season 4 also took 4 years in the end. :D Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Part 1 is coming out in January. Season 3 Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 will probably go into production after that. One team will be working on nothing else for the next 4 years. Chainsaw Man Season 2 is also in production. MAPPA released a teaser. But there’s the creepy rumor that they might split Season 2 into two parts with 15 episodes total, so 6 episodes + break + 9 episodes. It’s driving me crazy again. Hell’s Paradise Season 2 is also coming in January. It’s an action-shonen anime. After that, there should still be a final Season 3, but who knows when that will go into production. Hell’s Paradise Season 1 came out 3 years ago, by the way :D MAPPA has planned the second season of Dorohedoro for April (yes, a lot of MAPPA stuff is coming in the next 6 months). Season 1 came out in 2020. A 6-year gap. Oblivion Battery Season 2 (sports anime) is planned for 2027. Season 1 came out... in 2020 too. A 7-year gap. Ouch. --------------- To put it simply: Starting June 2026, MAPPA only has Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Oblivion Battery in production, which is absurdly little for MAPPA’s standards. https://anilist.co/studio/569/MAPPA We have enough room for Vinland Saga Season 3 and at least two more projects. We’ll have to see what MAPPA announces in spring 2026. There are some rumors that Vinland Saga Season 3 is already in production.

S
Sekraan · December 23, 2025

Adapting the rest of CSM Part One in just another 12-13 episode season would be difficult so I'd actually be glad if they are pursuing the 15 episodes even if it's in two parts.

Please you need to listen to the credits song "Jane Doe" by Kenshi Yonezu and Hikaru Utada, the lyrics are about denji and reze love story. When Kenshi Yonezu wrote the lyricks he kept the manga opened at the page where we see reze on the ground watching the café where denji is waiting for her, so he doesn't forget the tragedy this relationship is about. Also the name of the song (Jane doe) refers to the nursery rhyme Reze was singing in russian while choking the serial killer

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

I love Season 1 and the manga, but this movie ended up being just good for me. The story is awesome, I have nothing to complain about. BUT the new direction didn’t fully click, especially in the first 12 minutes. The sound effects and the exaggerated reaction cuts in the comedic scenes were a bit off, and the simplified art style wasn’t really my thing. In some ways, Season 1 actually feels more like a movie than this one. Rewatching episodes 10-12 gives a completely different atmosphere. With the changes, the movie comes across more like a typical anime, which takes away some of the uniqueness it had. The new style also reminded me a lot of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, especially in the second half. So if you enjoyed the action, action, more action, end part of the movie, then Jujutsu Kaisen would be a great pick for you in the future. On the positive side, the animation quality went through the roof. The skyscraper fight in particular is incredible, easily one of the most impressive action scenes I’ve ever seen. Fucking insane. But I have to mention that this scene and a few more action scenes are anime original. Like half of the fight was new, including the whole destruction of the city center. It wasn't even one-tenth as bad in the manga. It kinda shows that we now get alot new action scenes instead of new calm scenes to develop characters and expand emotional moments like in Season 1... Also, I still don’t understand the criticism of Season 1 from some critics: "We want the fast pacing of the Chainsaw Man manga.” Why is it bad for the pacing to add a new calm cinematic scene, but not a problem to stretch a fight scene to double-triple its original length? I'm so disappointed about the first 12 minutes. A scene where Denji is in the bathroom, trying to do his hair, trying on different clothes with inner thoughts about what Makima likes, I would have preferred so much more than these extreme comedic shots to express Denji's feelings. And these stupid sound effects to forcefully make a scene funnier, like a laugh track in old sitcoms, ruined it for me. I laughed so much during Season 1, but in this movie I didn’t laugh. I’m just hoping Season 2 will bring back more of the feeling from Season 1, though I’m not sure how likely that is, considering the criticism Season 1 got in Japan and how well this movie seems to be received there.

S
Scott · December 23, 2025

I'm conflicted because on one hand, I definitely prefer the tone of season 1, but on the other hand, I also understand that the movie's tone is probably more fitting for a story where the main character fights a typhoon while riding on the back of a shark.

R
Robert Dirk H. · December 23, 2025

refo44 mentioned a lot great things about the movie. I will give my positive take here. My negative one I put in another comment: The Reze arc is something else. It is so much about love, manipulation, and what it really means to connect with someone. Makima's biggest strength is about control. She doesn’t use fear to keep Denji in line. She figures out what he wants, like food, affection, someone to care, and she gives him just enough to keep him hooked. But Makima can’t actually connect with anyone. Everything she does is calculated. She doesn’t know how to be honest or vulnerable because control is all she knows. The whole date with her is cold. Reze is different. Sure, she manipulates Denji too, but with true feelings. She teases him, laughs with him, and shows him what a normal life could be like, school, dates, quiet moments. She doesn’t just play on his desires. She reaches for the parts of him that still want to be human. When they talk about the town mouse and the country mouse, it’s clear that Denji would rather live wild and free than safe and boring. The interesting part is, when she lets go, Denji actually falls for her and is ready to run away with her. The second she stops controlling the situation, she becomes someone he genuinely wants, not just someone he’s told to follow. "Let’s go to school at night." "Let me teach you to swim." "Meet me at the café." Denji’s used to following orders. But when he is waiting at that café, it’s the first time he’s doing something because he wants to, not because someone told him to. Sadly, Makima kills Reze before they can meet again, but Reze still reached Denji’s heart. Makima senses she’s losing her grip on him, and it forces her to change her approach how to keep Denji's Chainsaw heart close to her. Be excited for Season 2! Fans have caught more details too: - The café menu board gets rewritten with Denji’s favorite options in Reze’s handwriting. - In the phone booth, Reze’s hand is in her pocket, hiding a knife. She was ready to kill him, but when she saw his face, she just laughed and cried instead. She couldn’t go through with it. - The white flower Denji gave her is a white daisy, which means innocence and love at first sight. The red one she holds at the end is a red daisy, which means deep love and passion. - Reze never lied to Denji. She dodged questions and told half-truths, but she never outright lied except when she said, "Every feeling I had for you was a lie." She was lying about lying. Everything she felt was real. - When Denji rides Beam, Reze loses it laughing. She can’t even pretend to be cold. At the beach, she bursts out laughing again, then immediately says it was all an act. She was desperate to push him away and keep him safe. Reze is a terrible liar. Even in training, she couldn’t sell a performance. That’s why, at the end, she couldn’t even fake not caring about Denji. He called her out, and she had nothing left to hide behind. - Reze cut Denji’s tongue mid-kiss because she was jealous. He rejected her, and for the first time, she felt love, jealousy, and rejection all at once. She didn’t know how to handle it, so she fell back on violence. - Reze was always late to work at the café, even though it was a two-minute walk away. The place was empty, poorly run, and she was a lousy waitress. It was all a front. She wasn’t planning on coming back after killing Denji, but she kept showing up because she wanted to see him. - When Denji complains about everyone wanting Chainsaw Man’s heart and not his, Reze immediately reassures him that her love was real. And when he mentions Makima, Reze doubles down, saying, "It wouldn’t have worked if we ran away together." She whimpers, and Denji mocks her for it. She was willing to do anything, but she couldn’t stand the thought of him doubting her feelings. - If you zoom in on her notebook, you can see she wrote Denji’s name next to little hearts.

The School Scene featured a lingering shot of classical Painting, which funnily like myself on the first watch made Lola inch forward to see more closely too. The Painting in the School is called "Daphnis et Chloé" by François Boucher, depicting the lovers Daphnis and Chloe from the Greek Novel by Longus. A Romance between two young people in the Countryside (hmmmmmm), who share a precious and intimate moment and after being teared apart from another, eventually get back together. Denji and Reze are a cruel and unfortunate version of Daphnis and Chloe, who were denied their chance of happy ending inches apart from being united. The Painting is a an awsome Anime addition, but classical Paintings were already featured in S1 and this addition very much fits with what the Mangaka Fujimoto is going for. Fujimoto graduated from Tohoku University in Fine Arts/Western Painting and uses them in his works masterfully on diffrent occasions.

I will be honest and I’m going to get jump by the comments but this movie was eh.. meh? I haven’t read the manga in years but was this much action? Because the second and third parts of this movie are non stop action to the point where it feels the animation is doing most of the heavy lifting for the movie which is fine if you enjoy it. Personally I feel this could’ve been another season instead of a movie. Reze was a cool addition but I didn’t got to know her character that well for me to care at the end. Aki and the Angel demon were my favorite parts tbh. Overall I feel I’m in the minority when it comes to this movie lol. Also.. my favorite arcs are the ones after this movie so at least I’m happy we can move forward with the story and plot.

U
Username123 · December 23, 2025

I mean they kinda had to add more action because it’s a movie and they want to impress people with the animation, but yeah basically all the action with them in the skyscraper bulling and like 95% of the typhoon devil fight was not in the manga and was added for the movie, that being said I still love this movie, but I also agree with u is that the arcs to come are better. But to be fair to the reze arc the arcs to come are quite literally the climax of the whole series, so really they should be better tbh.

100 percent right on the characters and the emotion being the heart of the show, that’s why I love it so much compared to other typical shonen anime, chainsaw man doesn’t over complicate the fights with convoluted power systems or boring training arcs . It uses the fights to help convey the emotions of the characters, because that’s why people watch chainsawman because they care about Denji and the other characters so much.

YES, finally ! I was so looking forward to the reaction of the movie. I'm not exaggerating when I say the pool scene is one of my favorite scenes I've seen in animation. It truly serves as the foundation for everything the film tells; it perfectly encapsulates the entire Denji/Reze relationship thanks to its exceptional direction and adaptation. Right away, you sense that the happiness shown to us won't last, that it's all fleeting. The cutaway shot of the spider, plus the constant feeling of being watched: Makima, whose image is reinforced throughout the film with shots that are done to reference Makima's eye. For once, Denji experiences a kind of tenderness and gentleness he's never known before. Reze, for her part, seems sincere (which is the case since she can't fight underwater); it's as if she forgets her mission and lets herself be carried away by the moment. They are two lost souls who, for a fleeting moment, share a true moment of joy suspended in time. The staging reinforces this dreamlike impression: the soft lighting, the slow motion, the "camera" gliding over them like a Disney movie. It almost feels as if time stands still (and we wish this moment could last forever). The pool becomes a small world apart, a place where nothing else exists. (This is further emphasized by the sense of space disappearing when they are both underwater.) It is at this precise moment that they truly fall in love (a parallel to the scene where they fall into the sea, this time accompanied by a slightly remixed soundtrack, an obvious but impossible love). Sorry for the long message, I'm gonna start the reaction now, i'm so excited !!!

As an additional recommendation, it is worth watching Tatsuki Fujimoto 17–26 (Season 1) on Prime Video. Six different studios and seven directors adapt the early works of Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator behind Chainsaw Man. Each episode is an anime adaptation of a short story that Fujimoto drew between the ages of 17 and 26, including the first manga he ever submitted to a contest. It may be better suited for your own time, since it is probably not ideal material for reactions, but it is worth giving it a chance. The series is episodic, so each episode can be watched on its own

r
refo44 · December 23, 2025

As you know, Tatsuki Fujimoto, the author of Chainsaw Man, is a well known cinephile. The movie that made Denji and Makima cry is a real film: Ballad of a Soldier (1959), directed by Grigori Chukhrai, a Soviet war drama. Another movie they are shown watching is Psycho (1960), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, recognizable by its iconic main theme. Other references include some confirmed by Fujimoto and others discussed as fan speculation: VISUAL MOVIE REFERENCES IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE (Song: Iris Out by Kenshi Yonezu) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), directed by Quentin Tarantino Car driving shot matching camera placement, rhythm, and frontal framing. Band of Outsiders (1964), directed by Jean Luc Godard Denji, Power, and Aki dancing, directly quoting the café dance composition. 8½ (1963), directed by Federico Fellini Background characters dancing in a circular formation during the same sequence. Saving Private Ryan (1998), directed by Steven Spielberg Kishibe shot in the graveyard. Pulp Fiction (1994), directed by Quentin Tarantino Morning shot of Makima’s feet in the kitchen. Constantine (2005), directed by Francis Lawrence Angel descending shot focused on feet touching the ground. Inferno (1980), directed by Dario Argento Papercraft sequence. The Horse in Motion (1878), by Eadweard Muybridge One of the first motion pictures, referenced through the sequential Denji scene above the horse. Léon: The Professional (1994), directed by Luc Besson Hand to hand grenade exchange. OTHER VISUAL MOVIE REFERENCES IN THE REZE ARC MOVIE Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999), directed by Hiroyuki Okiura Reze’s design, posture, and combat silhouette. Three Colors: Blue (1993), directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski Swimming pool scene defined by blue color dominance. No Country for Old Men (2007), directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen Rooftop execution with a direct camera stare. Blue Spring (2001), directed by Toshiaki Toyoda Airplane flying above Reze on the rooftop. 28 Days Later (2002), directed by Danny Boyle Close up of a raindrop hitting Reze’s eye. Before Sunrise (1995), directed by Richard Linklater Visual language of romance in the first meeting. Confirmed by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Chungking Express (1994), directed by Wong Kar Wai Festival date scene with handheld intimacy and crowd movement. This movie, for me, was the best anime movie of the year not only for the art, animation, ost, and storytelling but also for the emotional depth. After rewatching the Reze arc, there are many things I now understand differently, and it hurts more. Before watching your reaction and analysis, I want to share some thoughts, some of which are just speculations about the multiple layers of meaning: Reze’s tragedy is that even though she is a killer and definitely not innocent, she truly falls in love with Denji while being trained to kill him. Even during their final battle, she cannot fully suppress those feelings. She clearly enjoys herself and cannot hold back her laughter at Denji’s jokes or when she sees him riding on Beam. Throughout the story, she never calls him the Chainsaw Devil, only Denji. Even though she hides her motives and her true identity, she never truly lies to him until the moment she says, “Every single feeling I had for you was a lie, part of my training,” a sentence meant solely to push him away. When Denji complains that everyone is after Chainsaw’s heart and not his own, and Reze tells him that she loves him, she is not lying at that moment, even if we as spectators, and Aki as well, assume she is only manipulating him. She recognizes herself in Denji. And when she says, “A sixteen year old is still a kid. Normally, you would study for entrance exams, join school clubs, and go out with friends, but instead you kill devils and almost get killed by them,” we cannot be sure, but maybe Reze was also talking about herself. In their first encounter, during the phone booth scene, Reze keeps one hand in her back pocket, the same pocket later revealed to hide a knife. This shows that she was ready to kill Denji at that moment but chose not to. The white flower Denji gives Reze is a white daisy, most likely the first time she has ever received a flower from someone. It symbolizes purity, innocence, new beginnings, joy, and cheerfulness. The red daisy Reze holds at the end, the one that makes her return to Denji, symbolizes deep romantic love. The butterfly seen being eaten by a spider is a monarch butterfly, which is poisonous to spiders that consume it. This mirrors how Reze, who starts as the predator, falls into the trap of love, even though we as spectators initially assume the opposite. When Makima stops Reze, she says, “I like the country mouse too.” This implies that she was spying on them and may have been listening the entire time. Some additional details are worth noting. This was Denji’s second kiss experience in his life, and it was horrible as well. Denji will never know that Reze returned to the coffee shop for him. The head of the Bomb Devil resembles the shape of Fat Man, the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945. In the flashback where Aki last sees his family as a child, his parents are shown reading his little brother the fable of the City Mouse and the Country Mouse just before they are killed by the Gun Devil. Denji’s conflict about whether he has a heart also echoes the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, whose central struggle is the belief that he lacks a heart.

I’m currently at a shelter because my apartment complex in Brooklyn burned down so I’m going to be missing the community and reactions here for the next week (I’m fine and I have money and ways to support myself), I haven’t seen this movie yet so I’m excited to circle back next week when I finally have a place to live. I’ll have a place to go next week so I’m fine, but others don’t have the same luck and privileges that I do, so if anyone wants to and is able to make a difference to homeless people in NYC who don’t have options especially this winter, the WSP Mutual Aid is an excellent nonprofit to donate to that goes as directly as a charity can to providing food and supplies to those in NYC who need it during winter. Of course feel free to do your own research.

Hey everyone, here's this year's end of year survey for the LM Patrons (our 3rd year!). You don't have to answer every question, just the ones you want. I'll be posting this in the Patreon comments for each of the four shows this week, and I'll start posting the results a week from now as well. I'll also have an in-depth analysis and comparison to last year on the Discord next week. Happy holidays, love you all ❤️ https://freeonlinesurveys.com/s/cMVmU91b
