Haikyuu!! 2x13 Reaction

I think what's more important than the translation, is the fact that Shimizu noticed Tanaka eating banana. Why did the writer even add that? And why only comment on Tanaka and not Kageyama who was also eating a banana at that time? Personally, I think it's rude to compare a person to a monkey.. and I don't think Shimizu has a rude bone in her body. I think what the writer is telling the viewers is that Shimizu is noticing Tanaka. So I agree with your initial interpretation.

The Tanaka banana comment was a poor translation. It should have been something close to "Tanaka eating that banana is fitting." It was basically commenting on how he was crouched down like an ape eating the banana.

At 5:24 when Kageshima is looking at his hands and moving his fingers, and then he's asked why he's moving his fingers like a pervy old man, that reminds me of the episode of Frieren when Stark kept making that same gesture as he offered to carry Frieren and Fern ended up calling him a perv. It must be a weird Japanese stereotype I wasn't aware of before watching Frieren and Haikyuu. See, mum? I told you anime was educational ;)
