The Godfather Reaction

I know it’s been a while since this came out, but it’d be cool if yall reacted to the 2nd one haha
so glad you finally watched this. And the next one is even better and answers some of your questions.
I highly recommend Network (1976) as a movie for you to watch in the future. Since you watched The Godfather because of its references in Sopranos, this one was referenced by Saul Goodman in the first episode of BCS.
Coppola re-edited I and II together with extra footage into a four part miniseries which aired on TV in 1977. Check it out.
I wish he had left the scene with Woltz and the child actress. He deserves no sympathy.
hope you guys do the trilogy!
Look out for the Sopranos cameos in part II !!
In some ways I think you will both enjoy the second movie more than the first.
Part II please
I was apprehensive about ever watching this because of the run time and how everyone considered it almost a perfect movie but when I first saw it, it's definitely as perfect as you can get.
What a pleasant surprise. A few quick thoughts on the movie. 1. There’s not a second wasted in this movie. Its long but literally every frame is important. That’s so rare. If it were filmed today it would be a miniseries cause even more story to tell. 2. The studio did not want Al Pacino to play Michael, they were struggling and were desperate for a hit. They wanted a major star and this was Pacino’s first or second movie. He was a theater actor, i think. Francis Ford Coppola had to fight to cast him. 3. Many (probably most) people think Godfather 2 is even better than Godfather 1. It’s famous for being the rare sequel that’s possibly better than the original. Both are considered among the best films ever made.
Wait, movies are an option now?! I was happy just having Sopranos/Severance to watch :)
It's settled then, next movie reaction LOTR! lol
PLEASE!!!!!🙏🙏🙏.... for the love of God and all that's holy and so you better understand the Sopranos references and simply as a reward to yourself, watch Godfather Part 2!!!!! As for part 3, only watch if you can't resist. You won't be missing anything meaningful if you don't. Just do like the rest of us and treat it like the bastard child brought to live with the legitimate family.
I watch this movie for the first time with you and i really enjoyed it! And i'm like you guys, i don't watch movies so you really starting to react to them will make me watch them as well so i'm all for it ( except horror movies in no universe i'll watch those, you really don't have to go through this Milena, everyone already want you to watch lotr i think it's enough haha )
Now that I’ve seen the whole video. I’m glad that you guys enjoyed the movie. Lowkey I was expecting you girls to get bored with it since it’s an older movie. Now.. like you girls mentioned multiple times, this could have been a show but at the same time I feel the movie doesn’t waste any time engaging you with the story and characters. Michael’s character is definitely one of the main highlights of this movie.. and how he becomes the ruthless person he is at the end. Man you girls are lucky because you will experience the Godfather 2 blind! I wish I could do that..
movie reactions…. LM actually did what they said they would… I feel similar to Fern witnessing Frieren waking up on her own in the morning
We need to praise them a lot
There are so many movies I’d love to watch again with them. Obv Godfather 2 and Goodfellas, but Moonlight, The Squid and the Whale, Your Name, Howl’s Moving Castle, there are so many character-focused films that can be fun to watch once a month.
character focused, you say?? I'm in. I love, and prefer, character-driven shows/movies. The only ones I haven't seen from what you listed are Godfather 2, Moonlight and The Squid and the Whale! I plan to finish the Godfather trilogy eventually bc I loved this first movie, but I've also heard good things about Moonlight so I do have my eyes on that one too.
Godfather is a classic. But hold on to your butt's cuz Godfather pt 2 is pure 🔥
Some people say even better than the first
che bella notizia!!!
Just for clarification, because I think it's made more clear in the books than the film, but Vito's sue for peace was also in part pragmatic for the revenge he cooked up with Michael. It doesn't necessarily step on the point about Michael being different than his father or that Vito genuinely wanting peace at the time but it's an extra layer to Vito's decision at the meeting. Revenge was always there despite him saying otherwise. They sued for peace and agreed to concessions that weakened them, then the move to Vegas further pushed that image that they're weak (and it's a genuine business move anyways), and then specifically after Vito died, Michael made his move. Vito pointed said *he* won't be the one to break the peace, because Michael will.
I’m so happy to see you guys watch this, I’m not happy to tell you that both Goodfellas and Godfather 2 are arguably even more important movies to watch to understand references in The Sopranos.
So thrilled to see this! (And greedily awaiting Part 2, which I think you'll like even more.) Putting aside the superficial references to this film (and the sequels) in The Sopranos, I think the broader context is so important. Particularly the way that both use the mafia as a proxy for America and American life. This may be the most *American* movie ever, in the way that it examines (and refutes) the idea of the post-war American Dream. Vito dreamed that Michael would escape his life and rise to become the politician holding the puppet strings, just like immigrant families dream that their children will graduate high school, and go to college, and eclipse their station. To *make it* in America. But The Godfather says that, well, maybe it's not so simple. "There wasn't enough time." Is there ever enough time to set your children up for success? Is it even really possible in this world? The film opens with Bonasera declaring that he believes in America. Two hours later, Vito is calling on him to help bury his son. Because at the same time that Vito is trying to boost Michael into a new life, he is grappling with the pending doom of the drug trade -- and (we know from history) the beginning of the end for the golden age of the mafia in America. The politicians will be his friend when he involved with gambling. Not so much with heroin. So the tragedy is not just that Michael hasn't eclipsed the life that his father built; it's that he might be inheriting a career in an industry in decline. Like the cobbler who passes on his family business to his son while Nike shoe factories spring up in Asia. So flash-forward 50 years to Tony, sitting down on the first day in Melfi's office, lamenting how he feels that "lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over." -- and how that parallels the post-9/11 disillusion with the broader American Dream. Tony watches a movie like this, and sees Vito Corleone in all his splendour, and romanticizes the heyday of the American mafia. Hell, look at that wedding sequence. How couldn't he? The best is over, indeed. Why do all the guys sit around Satriale's quoting the movie? Why does Christopher want to sell his story to Hollywood? The tension in The Sopranos is that... maybe the mob life isn't all that it's cracked up to be. And by extension, maybe America isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Maybe it's ennui all the way down. (It's worth mentioning that the film itself is a period piece, and that Coppola is there in 1972 drawing the same conclusions about the rise and fall of the American empire.) I don't know if The Sopranos is the most American television show ever made -- the show most *about* America -- but it's close. And it shares that DNA with The Godfather.
Sopranos being a uniquely american show is also a bit more understated than say some of the other contemporaries, especially when it's mixed in with a bunch of other themes and follows a single family with pretty general human issues as opposed to say, The Wire literally detailing an american city (though far from a typical one) or how Breaking Bad's plot wouldn't really be possible without how the healthcare specifically works in the US. It's been described as the best at portraying a specific Bush era, turn of the century, 2000s America. Not just the specific kind of atmosphere but also the feeling of transitioning to a post 9/11 era and the general sense of increasing malaise that serves as an underlying subtext to a lot of the ideas being explored, especially later on.
After Godfather Part 2, I would highly recommend another Francis Ford Coppola film, Apocalypse Now. It’s just about as perfect a movie as one can get, and easily one of the best war movies ever made!
A big +1 for Apocalypse Now (1979). AFI Top 100
This was a great surprise. Regarding Vito Corleone, he was basically the perfect mobster. He was an intelligent criminal with his own sense of ethics and a huge love for his family. Michael, Sonny and Fredo each inherited an aspect of Vito's personality. Michael inherited Vito's ability to be cold and calculating. Sonny inherited Vito's hot headed and violent side, while Fredo inherited Vito's more gentle side. None of the sons had everything that made Vito who he was.
1:15:06 "My other wife exploded in a car" :) Lola genuinely makes me laugh out loud at times.
That line killed me. L&M are hilarious.
I loved that you watched the movie, and I'm really happy you enjoyed it. I think it would be really helpful to watch Goodfellas next, I know you want to explore other genres (super stoked about that too), but I think it will help you to understand The Sopranos better. Also, it's really a fun movie.
As a film lover I'd love to see y'all do a bunch of different genres but man do I wanna see Godfather II and Goodfellas reactions (particularly because of the Sopranos actors in the latter). I would also love to see more older movies because I think you might honestly be surprised by, say, rom-coms/screwball comedies from the 30s and 40s (just to pick a random type of movie I love). Not that I'm expecting anything like that, I'm just a little too excited by the prospect of seeing you explore the medium of film more.
It would be so awesome if you started reacting to movies. Once a month would be totally fine!
WhooooaaaaAAAAAHHHHHH! I thought MAYBE we'd get this between-seasons for The Sopranos, I never predicted a surprise drop. It would be impossible to overstate how much love I have for this film, so I won't even try. This is one of the very few film adaptations which I say is 100% better than the source material. The book is subpar-to-average, but they managed to distill it into perfection. The sequel is one of the very few sequels that people recognize as just as good as -- if not better -- than the original. My vote is definitely to make it the next movie you watch. You can watch Part 3 if you want to, just give it a break before you do.
"do you renounce Satan?"
you guys might feel late to the party with this film, but to be fair, you got to it during your Sopranos watch, whereas i saw both this and Godfather 2 after seeing the whole series. i personally prefer the second movie to the first, but i think the baptism scene in the first is the best individual scene across both movies.
From an action climax standpoint I agree with you about the baptism scene. I believe it's a scene studied in some film schools as well. But I think the last two scenes of the 2nd film are the best overall from a character/thematic standpoint.
My biggest fault as a human being is that I really do not like gangster films. I respect the heck out of this film for everything it does in filmmaking and acting as well. But stories in this type of world are just incredibly boring to me. I truly hate it about myself. They release a movie reaction, and I have zero interest in watching that movie. Their reaction is worth it though. Hoping for many more of these.
I'm sure it's known but this is considered a true hollywood classic and one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. I think with this film it's easy to see what mob tropes the Sopranos were simultaneously influenced by, but also work to deconstruct and present differently. For instance "They know he's a civilian" gets completely nuked in the Sopranos as there's no pretense at all about some sort of civility in that regard. They are all properly dressed and are more well conducted while mobsters in the Sopranos are portrayed as more brutish and are less glamorized. Also a GIGANTIC bridge between the Godfather films and Sopranos is "Goodfellas". Which is directly what inspired the style of Sopranos (and also they literally took like half the cast of Goodfellas for the Sopranos and Ray Liotta was originally eyed for Tony Soprano). Less civilized gangsters and less romanticized and more on the everyday mundane aspects mob life. Much more of the downsides of the lifestyle that doesn't involve big hefty downfalls or high peaks (like the literal rise and fall of families and big family revenge), and The Sopranos was influenced by that takes it up to eleven by being even more mundane and about inbetween moments.
The way Lola insists on LotR, one day we're going to have a reaction that begins with Milena strapped to a chair with duct tape.
honestly i'm a bit surprised you didn't know about the horse's head scene. i never watched the movie but i've heard about that scene many times and it's been referenced in a bunch of other things. also 'is this a famous actor?' and the actor in question being al pacino is hilarious ngl
3 hours? well, i guess i'm watching HALF of the godfather for the first time tonight lol marlon brando also stars in a streetcar named desire, a movie based on the play written by tenessee williams, who was mentioned in the show when chris was writing his script. i do want to watch goodfellas since a few actors from the show are in it too, maybe that's also a good one for you two.
It's a trip to compare Lorraine Bracco from The Sopranos to Goodfellas
I think you would appreciate at least half of the plot of the 3rd film. It gets a lot of hate, and it is flawed, but it is being compared to 2 of the greatest films of all time. So, it was always going to be fighting an uphill battle.
The first one after Hereditary? We are really one step closer to The Lord of the rings reaction in 2027 lol. Monthly movies with different genres would be awesome.
In case you haven't found out (I haven't finished the video yet), it says "Mario Puzo's The Godfather" in the beginning because the movie is based on a novel by Mario Puzo.
I think a movie like The Godfather is so good that it transcends its genre. I'm actually not a huge fan of gangster movies and so I can understand how LM might have thought they would never watch it. But it is so good that it is one of the best movies ever, not just one of the best gangster movies. So I'm not surprised they liked it as much as they did. Same with The Sopranos. Also, same with Game of Thrones which appealed to people who typically have no interest in fantasy drama.
Because it's not really about gangsterism. It's about family and legacy and has a hefty shakespearean undercurrent so it's not really going to age or have novelty worn off once you get past the spectacle or mob elements. It's pretty universal and timeless as far as themes go. Also, it's just a great film in terms of filmography and writing and you can appreciate it for it's historical significance. This film is one of the greatest and most influential films of all time and it has even changed how gangsters in real life conducted themselves (as far as a certain type of image or self-perception goes) because it was that big of a cultural phenomenon.
Lol I can already tell you now that Spirited Away is gonna win whatever poll you put it in, it's beloved by every community. Also I know we're eventually gonna get there but I'm not sure I can survive a rewatch of Grave of the Fireflies, every time I think of that movie I become instantly depressed, nothing's gonna make me bawl like that one.
Once was enough for Grave of the Fireflies, , but all those other Ghibli movies would be great reaction candidates.
Glad you enjoyed the film as much as we knew you would. Some other classic films of varying genres i think you might appreciate are: Deer Hunter, Alien, Terminator, King of Comedy, Dog Day Afternoon, Pulp Fiction. And of course, Goodfellas.
You guys probably want to get through The Godfather 2 and Goodfellas, and then some other genres, but in time I recommend Heat. It's a crime movie rather than a mafia one but it shares some actors with The Godfather series, and also has some fascinating character work. If you're looking for an older movie, Vertigo by Hitchcock is often considered to be one of the greatest movie ever made. For horror, the double punch of Alien and Aliens is extraordinary and I think you guys would love Sigourney Weaver's character, especially in the second.
If you're doing Michael Mann movies, though, Heat is like third best behind Thief and Collateral. Thief would be a lot further up their alley, too.
Epic. Definitely agree with others that Goodfellas should be next, it is essential viewing, and thematically fits directly between Godfather and Sopranos.
If this were made today, it would absolutely be a show. That's just the nature of the current movie and TV industries.
I recommend watching Goodfellas over The Godfather 3. Sadly, The Godfather 3 suffers from a significant drop in quality.
True. Godfather 3 isn't a BAD movie per se, but its definitely the least good of the 3. By a LOT!
very nice surprise. can't wait for part 2
I'm sure you'll want to continue with the next one. I will say, I think Godfather 2 is an even better movie, I don't know how popular that opinion is. I also think you could just skip 3, it's really not good, but you can find that out on your own. If you're looking for other mafia movies that get referenced a lot, Goodfellas is great.
Yeah, Godfather Part 2 and Goodfellas are the other important movies.
A Dune reaction from you two where so awsome
OH MY GOD YESSS
Before you get to the other movies, make sure you watch Godfather II :) Edit: Just saw the whole video, and am glad you're also excited to watch the 2nd film.
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
2 is just as good if not better. They are both incredible cinematic accompaniments. You’ll love 2 as well. Brando is so magnetic. I forget how powerful his presence is and then when you watch this you remember what he was capable of on screen.
Also just so you know part 2 is somehow better if anything. 3 can be skipped though
The horse's head is so well known in pop culture so it is a treat to see genuine first time reactions to this scene from LM.
My naive 12-year-old self: "They're gonna steal this guy's horse."
A surprise to be sure… but a welcome one
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
Wow what an awesome surprise, let's gooo
You should also watch Once Upon a Time in America, propably the only movie that obliterates mob glorification even slightly more than The Sopranos.
Omg?? Guess I'll start to really watch movies
I hope more movie reactions
I appreciate the editing effort, of course, but don't be afraid to drop a full-length only movie every now and again :) Thanks for the surprise!
Al Pacino in the Godfather makes me feel things few men have been able to
Ooo what brought this on? Excited!
yes more movies reaction
Damn too bad I’m still at work but I will definitely check this one out as soon as get off work lol
Holy shit…my constant annoyance in the comments of me asking them to react to this movie actually worked?!?!?
There is a moment in the series finale of The Sopranos (no spoilers!) that is better understood having seen The Godfather. I was actually planning on pleading this case when they started the sixth season.
Wait a second... This isn't Lord of the rings!
wowwww
If you girls aren't really well-versed in movies and want to have yourself an absolute treat that still holds up to this day, you should look no further than Forrest Gump for the next movie reaction.
Thank you so much LM!
Guess I’ll watch this movie for the first time 🫡
hello? well, i suppose i will be watching the godfather for the first time tonight
Another LM movie reaction? This is rarer than finding an emotionally stable man in Italian Mafia drama stories
A movie ?? Let’s goooo This is rarer than the Frieren meteor shower that comes every 50 years !!
They saw that there would be Haikyuu movies and did what they needed to do.
Now it's only appropriate to also watch 'Goodfellas' to fully understand all Sopranos references
In the name of gabagool...
Nice!!!!!! Please tell me Goodfellas is next
You little imps!
