Haikyuu!! 1x04 Reaction

I was in Japan in the first decade of this century and volleyball was very popular then. As far as I know it has been popular for decades. It didn’t become popular because of the anime. More likely the anime would not have been made if volleyball wasn’t already popular… but I don’t believe that either. A good story is good whatever world it’s set in.

It's a Japanese thing. Calling people by their last names.

I can't help but get emotional every time I watch this episode. Hinata played a huge role in helping Kageyama overcome his trauma. In the previous ep, we saw Kageyama having nightmares of tossing the ball with no one there to receive it. Hinata's simple declaration of "I am here," means SO much. Kageyama always have the individualistic mindset of "Me, myself, and I are gonna win this". But volleyball is a team sport so that would never work and it ended up with "no one being there" for him. So Hinata's "I am here" is so powerful since it's not just about his physical presence there, but more of a declaration of genuine connection and mutual support. It warms my heart to see Kageyama finally have someone he can stand beside, knowing he's not alone anymore.

so glad you guys are loving it so much already! btw the last name basis isn’t just specific to sports animes. In Japanese culture, its normal to refer to people by their last names. first names are mostly reserved for close friends/partners/family etc :)

KARASU means CROW in Japanese. I don't know if Karasuno comes from that word also, but it makes sense why they call themselves the crows.

Kageyama starting to actually think about another teammate's potential while he sets and not just his own skills is such great progress T^T

The hands-clasped underhand grip, where your arms make a triangle, is called the "platform". When the ball comes to you, usually from a spike or serve, and you hit it up, this is called a "receive". You can receive underhand, with the platform, or overhand, with the fingers/hands. The underhanded platform receive is sometimes called a "bump". Using your platform to pass the ball up to a teammate can be called a "bump pass" or a "bump set". Lots of names for the same things. You are allowed to use any part of your body, including face, foot, chest, whatever, to hit the ball. The underhanded platform receive is the most consistent, controllable, and accurate way to receive the ball, but you'll see all kinds of crazy receives in this show!

I was curious so I searched what the move with which you receive the ball is called in English and apparently it's named "bump"... I think? (I also would kill for Suga, I fully understand the sentiment) Oh and in Japan it's just more common to use people's last names in most scenarios, that's why even if they're teammates they call each other by their last names. If they're kinda close or the same age you will hear them call each other by nicknames but it's still their last name that gets the nickname, like Suga (Sugawara Koushi) or Tsukki (Tsukishima Kei). It's going to be very rare for a character to call another character by their first name.

Fun fact. Kageyama has the word "Kage" which is the name of Kage from Ranking of Kings. Kage also has Hinata's voice actor.

Hinata helped Kageyama get past his trauma by telling him he will always be there to spike his sets no matter what, he doesn’t have to worry about nobody being there anymore and Kageyama helped Hinata by teaching him what to do to get past someone way taller than him, he helped Hinata see the view from the summit.🥲
