I think it goes without saying that we are here for manga reading reactions if that's a possibility for you.

I’m surprised to hear LM suggest that only Gon and not Killua had a major storyline (and character development) during the Chimera Ant arc. The arc was just as consequential for Killua: it’s where he finally began to reckon with the trauma of his upbringing (facing and overcoming Illumi’s deep-seated conditioning and manipulation) and to put into action everything he’s learned from Gon about himself and other people (making friends with Ikalgo, which it must be noted set off a chain reaction of events that culminated in the King remembering Komugi). Chimera Ant at once showed us the best and worst of Gon and Killua’s friendship—why it’s the best thing that ever happened to Killua, and also why it needed to change. That one note aside, near-perfect reaction. Rightfully lots of excitement for this arc, which I think will go a long way to giving LM some much-needed catharsis and closure for various long-running plot and character threads.

I think since they watch slowly and Chimera Ant Arc is pretty long, they forget that Killua's needle was also in it. I honestly forgot it was the same arc myself because the Palace invasion was very long lol

The ever pink/purple wearing Bisky wearing black probably for Netero.🖤

EclipseDeluna · June 11, 2024

When netero said that Gin was top 5 hunter in the world he was being modest, thats what bisky said about the nature of netero. Gin is probably the number 2 or 3 in the world. He is thousands of times more prodigy than Gon. Gin Is a Mastermind and A master Of Nen like we never seen in the series so far.

Regarding the manga coming back. the anime ends at chapter 339, and the current most recently released chapter is 400. Recently Togashi (the mangaka) came back to twitter and started posting progress updates on new chapters, as of today he has drawn up to page 9 of chapter 411 and his assistants have finished working on 401-405, and are finishing up inserting dialogue in 406. Usually he releases chapters in batches of 10 then takes a break that ranges anywhere from 6 months to 2 years on average, with one time he went away for 4 years. If he keeps up his current pace though he will have finished drawing/inking up until the end of 420 or further by the time 410 finishes publishing, so there's a good chance we may get more than 10 soon which is very good news.

Milena would also probably be happy to know that not just is Kurapika in the chapters after the anime ends, but Melody is too, and she is quite an important character.

Pariston is one of my favorite characters

S
Shivering King Banana · June 11, 2024

Pariston is a reference to Paris Hilton. If you've ever seen her switch her Persona on or off it makes sense.

G
Gaboxxy · June 11, 2024

Only Pro-Hunters can vote, it's important to note that. Pro-Hunters are the ones that have a hunter license and have mastered all the basic principles of nen. Amateur hunters are still sometimes employed by the association.

S
Shivering King Banana · June 11, 2024

Yeah that confused me on my first viewing. Essentially all amateur hunters and many/most pro hunters work for Pariston.

S
SoClose · June 11, 2024

Hisoka’s point system is just him guessing. Pro hunters at the Zodiacs’s level are a peg above the Troupe. They’re very skilled at concealing their aura. Take Netero for instance. Hisoka just knew he was strong by reputation, but he had absolutely no damn clue he stood no chance when he said he wanted to fight him. That harmless looking Bunny girl, who seems to be the “weakest” Zodiac most likely has a Nen ability that’s so problematic to deal with, she’d probably molly wop Hisoka in a 1 v 1. That’s the unspoken power scaling we’re talking about.

j
jweher · June 11, 2024

yeah, he's probably judging them purely based on aura. hisoka, as someone who has a "tricky" ability to deal with, has probably defeated opponents technically "stronger" than him. that bunny girl could be a similar fighter, who could maybe even defeat the zodiacs hisoka has given more points to. i'm sure hisoka knows that too, but the audience tends to take the characters' judgements and opinions as pure facts.

Your reaction to the intro is why I always argue against the "but it's spoilers" people XD

K
Kita Shinsuke · June 11, 2024

great discussion after the episode

j
jweher · June 11, 2024

something that i missed the first time i watched the show was that pariston was fully threatening to kill gon. after ging says he wants to run for chairman, pariston brings up his dying son and asks if he should go "visit" him and worries about him dying after the visit. ging's reaction to a guy threatening to murder his son if he runs for chairman is.. interesting, but so in-line with everything we know about him. i'm sure he's confident that pariston won't be able to get to him because gon has some strong friends protecting him 24/7, or maybe he even intends to stop pariston's attempts, if he makes them. but yeah the nonchalant reaction coupled with the fact he clearly does not intend to visit him.. lol

H
HeavenlyR · June 11, 2024

Ging knew that Pariston was testing him, I viewed the nonchalantness as him not giving ammo to Pariston for something to use against him.

M
Max__ · June 11, 2024

You girls chose a great time to know Hunter x Hunter, the author is currently writting and drawing new chapters at full steam. And btw, Pariston is the only dude in this show that really gives me the creeps.

s
sunshine · June 11, 2024

the only one??? lmaooo

V
Veya · June 11, 2024

A thing about Ging being glossed over is that while he is like a man-child, one way that he isn't is that he has fully acknowledged that he's selfish and a bad person. He literally said so in his tape to Gon. No 12 year old child would have that self-awareness. A lot of adults don't even have that self-awareness. But otherwise, most of the observation of his characterization is mostly correct (kinda). The show knows this, it's not glazing him as a outstanding person, from this episode it's easy to see that. Everyone treats him like he's a dick. He also has *some* attachment or openess to Gon or he wouldn't have done the greed island thing, but he has also openly said he doesn't want to see Gon because he's ashamed. He's selfish but it isn't as binary as it's painted as. And no, of course he isn't evil based on what we know or see so far. In a show with actual pedophiles and mass murders (phantom troupe, actual callous murderers, gets a warmer reaction lul) the reaction to ging was always pretty hilarious and almost meme territory within the fandom.

r
ridleymon · June 11, 2024

I love how long the build up to Ging is and then the show proceeds to reaffirm every previous sentiment of what an unabashed loser deadbeat he is lol

s
sunshine · June 11, 2024

yeah lmaooo people be expecting the show to pull a hohenhiem when no he's just a trashy father

A
Allie Autumn · June 11, 2024

i hope you guys decide to read the manga after this!! it’s very good. both kurapika and melody play a major role. i’ve been enjoying your guys’ reactions for a whole year!!! i’ll miss this series.

s
sunshine · June 11, 2024

I second this! also highly recommend you start from the beginning, its more than worth it to see the soul in togashi's art, the nuances in the facial expressions, the creative panelling, among all the greatness that translates differently in the anime.

k
karina · June 10, 2024

the author's name is togashi, and he has been uploading updates on twitter for a month about the new chapters he is drawing, I think he has 5 new chapters at least in the draft and it looks like he will surely continue advancing with the manga since he is super active and is uploading many things not only of hunter but also of his other works, we are all very happy that he is back with so much energy. <3 on the other hand this arc is full of surprises, I can't believe you guys are already finishing it :(

J
Jack SV · June 10, 2024

I know this recommendation won’t win any time soon but if you guys want the same thing experience as Hunter x Hunter then in the future consider watching Yu Yu Hakusho.. it’s from the same creator and has a similar storytelling. Regarding the episode, all I will say is that it should be interesting to see what you guys think of Gin by the end but your initial impressions of him are interesting and I will just leave it at that lol

s
sunshine · June 11, 2024

I second this! in due time tho. I'd recommend yu yu hakusho over any anime released in the last five years tbh, its a lot like dbz but with a 10 times faster pace, and much better writing, its a lot more battle focused than hxh.

H
Haru · June 10, 2024

Flubbedsquid · June 10, 2024

I love that you guys bring up how "it feels like we've come back from war." It's a very spot on analysis and I think this arc is the way it is because Togashi very specifically wanted to invoke that feeling. The chimera ant mission was gon and killua's first actual mission as hunters. When you're on mission like that, the rest of the world seems to fade away. You need to be fully present and mindful of what's going on. And in the opposite way, when you come back, the time you spent starts to feel like it wasn't even real. Being reintroduced to your old life, it feels like, did all of that war stuff really happen? You participated in battles? Fought through life or death situations? What do you mean, look, my high school friends are right there, so surely that is real and not the other stuff? But of course it doesn't vanish like a dream. It affects you forever, some people more than others. Sometimes in good ways, often in bad ways.

r
ridleymon · June 11, 2024

This arc always makes me wonder what it would have been like to have followed the Hunter manga from the beginning of its serialization and then reaching this point of the story all those years later. I’m always impressed how it manages to generate a surreal sort of nostalgia for earlier characters and arcs even if you’re watching the anime for the first time.

D
Darrach · June 10, 2024

I knew this would hit all the emotional notes lol, the intro, the cameos, the ED and the picture at the end especially. Given that they were told at some point that this arc is just the aftermath of the Chimera Ant arc, I think they are going be surprised just how much is here, and how much they will enjoy this!

K
Kita Shinsuke · June 10, 2024

lol best reaction to the intro ever. Outro too

Out of interest, who do people like more/think is a better character, Killua or Gon?

I

r
refo44 · June 10, 2024

I don't think they will enjoy it. JJK it's just good animation but it lacks writing. The plot is too predictable and the only character development is when the character die. That's is a type of show more for hardcore anime fans. A better recomendation is Chainsaw's Man. At least has a better writing.

T
Theria · June 10, 2024

Lola, I love your excitement to see Kurapika again! I was the exact same the whole show, and trust me, the next arc just reiterates everything that’s wonderful about him. But just a request, I REALLY think you should consider reading his backstory before the last episode. Even if you don’t plan on reading the rest. It’s like a prologue for everything that’s gonna happen with him, and it’s going to make the last discussion so much deeper since you’ll be able to comment on where the manga can go with proper context. It’s a short two chapters, and meant to be read right after the anime, but I really hope it can make it into your discussion and I know you’re going to love it! https://comick.io/comic/hunter-x-hunter-kurapika-s-memories

Ging didn't abandon Gon, Mito won the custody in court. (Mito says that Ging used to go off on long journeys for his hunter activity and return once in a while. Then she adds that she lied to Gon because Ging didn't abandon him but she won the custody in court and took him from Ging so in my opinion this means he was forbidden from seeing him) - edited in case you want to know my point of view The thing about the brain is that it's not in the manga, it's just a theory and it's not needed in my opinion but you'll know why just when you'll have the explanation later in this arc

L
