My condolences to Lola and Milena, because according to their discussion they will be finishing, or already have finished, Black Sails today. <3 I'm sure I'll say more about it in the actual final post, but I'm so glad you both decided to experience this amazing story. I know it's one you'll be thinking about for a long time.

I love the introduction to Skeleton island as a place of myth. It reminds me of Madi and John talking on the Walrus (?) in s3e8 where they were hiding on the horizon watching the beach from a position where the ship both 'exists and does not exist at the same time'.

If you’re podcast people, I highly recommend checking out the podcast “Fathoms Deep” once you finish the series. It’s two women analyzing the show episode by episode, and they really open your eyes to how much rewatch value the show has in seeing just how much is there, hidden or not noticed or not realized on a first watch. They highlight so much of the sincere and amazing effort that went into creating this beautiful, magnificent show. You said “this show is about stories” and it absolutely is (so excited for you to hear the ending monologue) and to better understand a story, dissecting it and peeling back the layers is so helpful. As always love your reaction and your obvious love for the show!!

guys we are in agreement they HAVE to watch haikyu right? i mean monster is prob better but they would adore haikyuu

D
Derrick C. Shields · April 26, 2024

Monster is leagues better, but as much as I don't want to admit it, they'd probably like Haikyuu more...? Or maybe it's simply the better "reaction" show.

You should definitely read Treasure Island, it won't even take much time because it's farely short. I won't sell it as one of the greatest books ever written, but it's a good story, the one responsible for how we see pirates today, like the stereotyped peg-legged pirate with a parrot on his shoulder or even the "bury the treasure" trope. I read the book after watching the show and I liked it very much, it was nice to see what happened to (some) of the characters way after the events in Black Sails and also to read about pirates, way of speaking, costumes etc. of that era in a way closer to the reality (the book was written about 150 years after the peek of piracy but it's still more reliable than modern era depictions).

Gustavo · April 26, 2024

I have yet to read the book.

I’m only on season 3 right now so I can’t watch these reactions but I’m wondering if they are mentioning any shows they would play next?

G
Gustavo · April 26, 2024

No, not yet.

Just two more episodes. Time really flies. "Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that it happened". I choose to be both.

Black Sails summarized is “I don’t mean to be political, but what if everyone had basic human rights?”

I
Isaac · April 26, 2024

Radical talk like that will see you keelhauled

M
My Toasty Toast · April 26, 2024

Gonna push for the pirate trifecta this year and watch “Our Flag Means Death” for a comedy that focuses on dismantling toxic masculinity

Also - Toxic Flint is Best Flint.

HenryM · April 26, 2024

"There's no hidden message and no equivocation. You will make no moves against Flint" Silver being as clear as posible got a chuckle out of me lol, basically the same reaction as Milena. Got me thinking about season 2 and how one of the men thought Silver was being subtle about wanting someone killed

c
cosmotron · April 26, 2024

I definitely think it's a kind of callback to that moment, and it always makes me chuckle too lol

I love how much Avery is treated like this near-mythical figure throughout the entire show. He's the beginning of Nassau, the cause of Rackham's ambitions, the one all the oldheads like Blackbeard talk up....all for Avery himself to seem so small in comparison to this even more mythical and haunting island.

cosmotron · April 25, 2024

From what I understand, the connection between this show and Treasure Island is like this: Black Sails is the "true" story, and Treasure Island is a story that gets told about/in the wake of some of these characters.

J
Jordan · April 26, 2024

That's an interesting perspective. Are you talking about the story of the island itself within the book or the actual book?

S
Sebastian · April 25, 2024

havent read treasure island but from what i understand this is when the show really starts setting the dominoes in place for the events of the book. seeing the way the show depicts skeleton island with such a stunning eeriness made me interested in reading it eventually

c
cosmotron · April 25, 2024

Shoutout to the music this episode. It's always great, but it is particularly haunting and memorable here.

H
HenryM · April 26, 2024

I love the way they transitioned to the island reveal, with the violin guy's melody serving as the theme of the island. It felt so ominous and beautiful

Also, that shot of Max and Anne holding hands in the snow is one of my desktop backgrounds.

I really wish this show was longer but again it’s perfect like it is. Will be sad that it’s over now. I have enjoyed this journey thoroughly with you guys.

The Skeleton Island introduction is so cinematic. I get swept up in it every time

It's got to be one of my favorite scenes of the show! Flint's voiceover with the shots of the crew staring at the Spanish ship is *chefs kiss*

I watched episode 10 the other day and now I'm feeling a bit empty lol. I made a drawing of our favorite captain to cope with the loss of this show and I want to share it with you since he's become one of my favorite characters of all time https://i.imgur.com/s9RUWDF.png

I’m getting that “end of my favorite show” anxiety. There is always a hole left when something this good is over.

c
cosmotron · April 25, 2024

I know I’m so sad about it 😭 like the journey has been worth it and rewatches are incredibly rewarding, but still.

s
sand_fl · April 25, 2024

L

That thumbnail! I knew that moment would get to you. That moment between them in the snow is so beautiful. But my favorite bit might be Idelle's speech about Max. "That woman has been fighting the whole goddamn world since the day she was born." Max may not wield a sword like Anne, but she's a fighter too. She just uses different weapons.
