It could be that he was the latest in a long line of Kaito Kusanagis. The Dark Scientists kept using them up, so they were always recruiting a new one when they could.

Also, btw, I love the 2-comic format! Worth the wait!

I like to think that Kim is from an alternate reality where all of her mixed up facts are truths.
