I still have fond memories of the Assassin’s Creed multiplayer back in the day for much the same reason. Basically no cooperation, hunt and being hunted, basically no voice chat… only real time I’ve enjoyed online with randos tbh

Even without voice chat, there is still a bit of toxicity in DBD's post-game lobbies (or was, as of when I last played in 2022) -- sometimes you'll finish a match and find just a furious screed posted to the lobby by someone who died earlier, screaming at you and calling you names. I especially ran into this when I was trying to focus on some seasonal quest activity rather than being a competitive survivor or killer. Or for *ever* using the "set down carried survivor" button as a killer, for some reason? I'm not sure why, but that made the survivor team *freak out* at me in a couple cases. I think maybe in some ancient build of the game, it might have been related to a way killers could grief players, and they've never forgotten? But mostly there's no need to engage with any of that. And *most* of the players on both sides of the match will just part with a polite "GG!", win or lose.

Ah, yeah. I remember how stressful it was to play killer when a 'pro' team of survivors came along. I had 3 of them downed at one point, yet, the game ended with me only managing to kill one of them. It was harrowing. I still have a bit of a twitch in my eye from seeing ugly Christmas sweaters, as that was their chosen uniform.

The thing is that killing one of them is a somewhat decent result! Sure, you didn't wipe them all out, but you have solidly avoided the shame of getting steamrolled by the survivors. Some of those coordinated groups of survivors are *definitely* using voice chat via some other service to plan and orchestrate their hijinks.

That's a great experience to relay Yahtz, because I feel like I have similar opinion of online multiplayer games as you, and when I played DBD with my friends I played the killer and didn't really enjoy it. I didn't get anxiety and liked chasing around my friends even though I was bad, but all the other skill trees and perks turned me off the have since I felt clueless on how to play well. Maybe if I wasn't seduced by the siren song of Huntress, I'd be a DBD player today.

Interesting thought, but without coordination and communication is it actually multiplayer? Like if bot AI could match other people's action wouldn't it be the same game?

Funny enough, I used to be really into Fortnite, and once I realized that it was basically a roguelike but the enemies were other players, I realized why, because I'm heavily into that genre as well.

Yahtzee, you do realize that there are people out there who say, "Boy, that guy sucks at this" after watching one of your game reviews, don't you? Why does that not bother you, but being bad at a multiplayer game does? I'm not saying that I'm one of those one of those people, mind you. The fear of judgment just seems like a strange attitude for someone whose job is posting videos to youtube.

I'm hoping that Jess did the editing, as there's no one better qualified. :)

Yep, and I also hope she got in a few friendly giggles at and some playful ribbing with Yahtzee, too

I’m exactly like you except for Chivalry 2, which also luckily has no voice chat
