With Proton you can completely cut all the major players out of the loop. It’s not as friendly an experience as would be necessary for mainstream adoption but it’s getting there. Come the next generation of consoles what is the advantage over a SteamMachine? It’s got multiple store fronts and any libraries you already have, backwards compatibility going back decades (potentially), plus it can do regular desktop things. Physical disks with the game on was kinda the last USP consoles had.
One big reason for the shift away from discs is the ballooning storage sizes of many games. You would need at least 3 double-layer blu-ray discs just to hold the base game for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. If games won't play correctly on a spinning disc drive, there's no way they'll play on a spinning optical drive. The reasonable solution here would be to go back to cartridges in the form of portable solid-state drives that hold the entire game, but this won't happen because of the price hikes in components that is causing companies to lose optical drives in the first place.
DON'T settle for just choosing the lesser of evils and using illegal methods (Nintendo will come for you lol). WE NEED to get rid of DRM across ALL platforms. That's the only true way to preserve games and ownership.
I don't think it's fair to compare games to movies on disc, because though discs are fast enough to stream video/audio content, they are too slow for modern gaming (even bluray is around 3x slower than most HDDs). Discs got left behind in favor of faster input/output speeds.
I would have no reason to buy a ps6 of its all digital. Like yeah they have exclusives but would they be worth the rice point
And as always, one company will spearhead this, take all the blame and bad press, and then Nintendo follows suit (they already did), then all the other shit companies. Next horrendous idea some other company will spearhead it, but all others will quietly adapt it afterwards without any backlash. It's a good strategy. Until the (metaphorical) guillotines come out.
3 BILLION fucking dollars in DIGITAL PREORDERS for GTA 6 is not helping our argument against digital only
100%. it's almost impossible when so many gamers are on PC, which is all digital.
Any game that I buy from now on will be on physical media. This fucking sucks.
make sure you check those games on doesitplay.org or else you might be buying a disc that requires you to download the rest/all of the game, required day 1 patch, or connection to the server.
Good video, I agree I don't think its that consumers "prefer" digital so much as companies keep forcing digital on them. There hasn't really been a way to buy physical copies of games for a while. Even if you buy a disc, there's most likely a day 1 patch & other patches that are needed. The disc doesn't actually contain the full game.
and this is why I've only been buying from GOG for years now. (They're more provide your own physical medium.)
