Weed rolls are also sold (at wholesale prices!) at new camp tavern as well as living quarters there by two separate swamp weirdoes It would have been a much shorter walk than the swamp camp

I recall the combat being kind of brutal in the original Gothic and Gothic 2. In the latter I recall coming across a skeleton and thought "I can take this, skeletons are always weak monsters". Nope, it wiped the floor with me. Gothic 3 had a crazy imbalance with how it's combat worked though.

As far as I remember from back then, in G1 soon after the start on your way to the first settlement, you'll meet a man who warns you to not stray from the path and TO NOT GO INTO THE FOREST. But of course, I had to stray from the path and go into the forest, only to be viscerated by a pack of wolves not far from the forest's edge. Then I knew why you'd not go into the forest. 馃槈 All in all, I loved this brutally kinda-realistic approach in the Gothic games: the world itself is almost completely open to you, "only" limited by the enemies which you'll have to level up to (or be *very* clever and lucky to avoid). It also makes enemies a real danger instead of being just walking XP pools like in so many other games. (They'll become that in Gothic, too, but much later.) Another notable feature of the the Gothic, Risen and Elex series is their almost (?) complete lack of loading zones. No loading screens between regions, settlements, buildings, caves etc. Everything is being streamed in the background seemlessly. Back then it was revolutionary, today it's still notable with even big "open" AAA games still being divided into loading sections. edit: All this applies to the original games from Piranha Bytes who sadly were disbanded by their parent company in 2025. I don't know the Remake from another studio aside from the demo.

Bravely bold Sir Yahtzee did Gothic (Remake) play. He was not afraid to suck, O brave Sir Yahtzee! He was not at all afraid, though it said "Nintendo Hard"! Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Yahtzee! He was not the least bit scared to take on the starter rat. Then it gnawed his kneecaps off. "Shit!" said brave Sir Yahtzee. He poked a mangy wolf, but it ripped his spleen away. And the local a-hole mugged him, brave Sir Yahtzee! His sword ripped off And his money too, And no Firebolt learned 'Cause tuition's too high, Bows and arrows are crap, Because wolves are damned fast, He's stuck down in a mine --- THAT'S ENOUGH GAMING FOR NOW, LADS! Brave Sir Yahtzee's had enough! This pointless task he'll pass, not puff! When tedium reared its ugly head His interest in this game fell dead. Yes, brave Sir Yahtzee's wrath was stirred And so this game he flipped the bird. Plain boredom was the final boss. Sir Yahtzee could not give a toss. ("And fuck this stupid torch!" Said Sir Yahtzee.)

I'm sympathetic to the idea of game remakes, which seem to be about preserving some timeless aspect of a game, be it a mechanic, story, or game-world, and investing it with all the advancements we've made in areas where the game isn't so timeless--a control scheme that made a lot more sense when the N64 was the only console you'd ever owned, arcade death rules that are just annoying when you don't have a quarter on the line, etc. But this feels like someone got angry about too many people describing the Dark Souls games as difficult, and decided to show those young whippersnappers how our games used to not just be difficult, but viscerally unpleasant.

For the record: There is fast travel (to a few hub locations), but it comes a little later in the main questline. Also you can get one of those velociraptors as a mount.

I am one of those old turds playing this and I never realized you could miss items for quests (unless specifically placed for the quest). I just lootgoblin absolutely everything and only sell when I specifically need money, lol. Never crossed my mind normal people play differently.
