Spider Man’s going to make a lot of money, and many people will say super-hero movies are back. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel that, with a few exceptions, ‘super hero’ is defined by the output of exactly two comic publishers. And that even the exceptions, like The Boys, exist as reactions to those two publishers’ output. So something like, say, K-Pop Demon Hunters doesn’t really get treated as a superhero movie even though it ticks a lot of the right boxes. And that movie was stupid popular. I guess I’m saying you’ll see superheroes, but maybe they won’t be defined/restrained by Marvel and DC. 🤷‍♂️

I got sick of superhero movies after end game. Not sure if it was fatigue or they ran out of decent plots and heros to make movies from?

Great episode, Darren. I, for one, am excited to live in a former superpower in decline. Just need to go ahead and get my copy of the rise and fall of the Roman empire.

The problem isn't that its a retelling of True Grit, its that its a bad retelling of True Grit. And while normally I say you should not judge a movie based on it as a adaptation, its near impossible to not do that when its taking so much from the comic its based on when it is so obvious where its taking and how its changing. Sometimes this works, here its a bad adaptation of its comic as well as True Grit.

Pretty sure Marvel still has a fuckton of superhero movies planned for the future, many of which are already in production so I sincerely doubt it. Like they've planned movies all the way through to the end of next year, so we've at least ~540 days of superhero movies left I'd be cool with it being the end of DC superhero movies, though, they've always been pretty fuckin weird imo so I wouldn't mind seeing them end

You could argue it is also symbolizes the end of millennial macro culture, as younger generation pop culture items like the Backrooms are slowly growing into the cultural zeitgeist. We could eventually see an animated movie based on “Among Us”, biopics based on YouTubers, and even more horror movies based on creepy pastas or SCP. These don’t have the baggage of being “my parent’s” stuff filled with nostalgia that younger audiences can’t relate to.

Another of those "I wish I enjoyed the movie even a tenth as much as I enjoyed the Backdrop" episodes. I'll take your advice and re-watch True Grit (and maybe I, Tonya too, which really is top drawer). :) I still find it very difficult to think on any wider industry trends because of how bad so many of these films have been. I really liked Thunderbolts, but it was always a niche roster so wasn't expecting it to perform. Fantastic Four was...fine. Everything else for the past 3-4 years has been pretty sub-par so I'm erring with Gunn on the mediocre movie fatigue side of things for now. Let's see how Spiderman and Doomsday do, though could still be the death-knell for big budgets for any characters outside the top-TOP rosters.

I think it'll be the end of anything less than "good" getting a big marketing budget, especially after recent MCU failures too like Captain America BNW
