I never really liked Majora’s Mask tbh, because I found the pressure and waiting around too unpleasant with a weird amount of time wasting. I can appreciate it for what it is and what it does, but it’s easily my least favourite 3D Zelda (and I’m including Phantom Hourglass in that). But I’m not a fan of timeloops, so that’s not surprising! Interesting breakdown either way :)

Majora's Mask has its fair share of issues, but it's unique and creative, which allows me to overlook a lot of its flaws.

I do think waiting for events is actually an important part of the game, since it gives you a chance to look around and stumble on new quests/NPCs that you wouldn't have found if you could just skip ahead to the exact time you wanted. Sure it might be annoying on a replay, but when you're first playing (and going in blind), that's when you find all the fun parts of the game. My casual running around while I waited for morning led me to catch a thief who robbed a little old lady, and that little old lady then gave me a bomb mask that let me blow myself up. That fully blew my mind as a kid, and I wouldn’t have found it without some aimless wandering.

The complaint about waiting illustrates how people optimize the fun out of games. Child me playing Majora's mask saw the "waiting" time as recess, unstructured playing with the systems, exploring, mindless combat for the sake of fun, and the like. It's true I missed specific deadlines more than once, but it was more often because I was having fun messing around then being unable to access them in the time allotted. And "missing something I can repeat because I was having too much fun playing the game" is hardly damning criticism.
