The game I love but also hate is Grimshire, which is in Beta. It's deceptive to call it "cozy" after the first NPC dies and I ended up slaughtering one of my chonky critters to slate the unwieldy bloodlust of invading pirates. And these are for the most part furry characters caught in the midst of an undefined plague that has caused other characters to turn feral. I have concerns about how addictive this game is.
I've definitely felt this way with some games. Recently I've been reading the "Umineko When They Cry" sound novels, and while there are some real "holy shit" moments in the story that stick out in my mind as emotionally engaging, there are also some absolutely lowbrow, even disgusting jokes that would make the game seem like something I would be embarrassed to recommend.
I can't recall doing this as an adult - I installed some mods and started cheating. I'm still dying, but now I have some get-out-of-jail cards. I'm an adult. I don't have 200 hours to 'git gud'. I'd like to experience the game as-intended, but I simply can't. It's either cheat, or not play. Hollow Knight was difficult, but fine-enough difficulty-wise. This just broke me. If I was 14 again, I'd spend a ton of time on this, but... nope.
This was my experience too. Haven't gone back. Don't feel bad that I wont'.
When will the sponsor-free version be added to the playlist? Avoiding ads is literally the only thing I want out of my Patreon support.
oh SURE! Leave out Manxman in your little British isles joke. Typical!
I'm in a similar situation now. I'm at 89% completion in act 3, and attempting bosses has gotten to be absolutely miserable. I *want* to be able to keep experiencing the game, the soundtrack, and see where things go with the world and characters, but it's just so fucking exhausting both mentally and physically. It's been days since I last played and have lost the drive to make any more attempts :/
The game contains multitudes. I'm not sure where that puts it for categorization, but you certainly can't call it "bland," maybe just "not for me."
The question there is, since both the good and the bad are marks of a game being art, do they cancel each other out, or do they elevate it from art to ART? Or maybe even AAAAAAARRRRRT!!!!
I also hated that gauntlet (and couldn't beat it for ages) - but if you do have the luxury of time to complete Shakra's questline first, that gauntlet is instantly elevated by her involvement. Obviously, not helpful for Yahtzee if he doesn't have time to do that questline, but it really made me come around on the experience.
Yeah, pretty much. I was surprised at first by everyone's reaction, because I had done the questline, and with her on my side, it was a walk in the park.
thanks for telling like it is Yatz!
