I like the YT playables because they can't take my money - it's impossible for me to give into the 'oh just throw it a few dollars, just this once, just for this event...' trap
Being an extra posh and handsome brain-man, i prefer the linkein playables. /s in case that's not clear.
I appreciate that you touch on why the self-loathing for this kind of play occurs, and then talk about what we can learn from these kinds of games. I got a lot out of this, thank you.
That was an interesting cultural rabbit hole to learn about that I have no desire to visit/get taken advantage by.
I feel like these Playables purpose is very clearly to keep you hooked on the platform, which feels icky to me. When I watch long Youtube essays or listen to podcasts (including yours), my go to activity is either doing dishes (keeps my hands busy) - amongst other repetitive chores - or at the treadmill. Probably not as fun :P but I think I'll stick to those over these quick dopamine hits
As someone who goes through phases of getting into a mobile game and then dropping it, hating it all the more for the time it wasted, it is funny to see Yahtzee suffer through something like that cycle My best tip is to appreciate the moment, but realize that you can uninstall (or stop with that version) and a more interesting game is probably around the corner There are games that are good for zoning out, and game that are good for locking in. Just have to find your game for each
I hadn't tried the playables yet, and now I just tried Clean It. Dammit, Yahtz!!
Can't wait for YouTube to be banned in our firewall at work, in category "games"...
I am kinda grateful for YT playables. I recently broke my arm and I could not play any games for two whole months since I could not hold a controller. YT Playables helped alleviate that for all the reasons you said. Quick, easy, and you can play a lot of them with one hand while taking to friends on Discord, watching a movie or just plain chilling to some music. I am the same way, I have to fidget with something while I am listening to a podcast
I have to wonder if YouTube has its scanners set so they don't suppress it someone talks up their products.
that supreme duelist game had me by the curls for like 2 hours
I think there's something about my brain that both loves digging for that hidden and needs something that isn't going to ask ask many hours or high skill and focus. Especially after a work day. It kinda reminds me of the NewGrounds flash era.
There is certainly a place for these kinds of games, throwback to the impossible game of xbla game which had no artistic value other than pissing us off. We're allowed to enjoy dross for what it is, even if it's just convenience. Not every endeavour needs to be exciting or new, and these games never aim or claim to be that. Sometimes things just exist, and that's okay
I've always been curious about the Netflix games, but I didn't know YouTube had them.
The Netflix games are pretty phenomenal. They have "real" games there that you can find on steam, like Oxenfree, Storyteller, and Into the breach. But they also have really fun smaller games. Like their island minesweeper which I can't put down. I highly recommend if you already have a subscription.
This is how videogames started. Just a good loop of enjoyment. You played it because you felt happy playing it. These are the basics of good game making. Can probably make a class studying these games.
Nothing to be ashamed of, sometimes we need to turn off our brains and just chill.
as someone with more reasons to think than to reasonably count up, fucking yes to that.
