The Oooh, Banana is right from Donkey Kong 64, and for that matter it also has the uncomfortably sexualised monkey lady.
My head canon for Pauline in the original DK game is that Mario was trying to rescue her and she didn't want or need to be rescued -- Mario just decided it needed to happen. Maybe he thought DK kidnapped her? Maybe it was some sort of comedic misunderstanding? Who knows. But because Mario thought he was the hero, he 'had' to 'rescue' Pauline.
I'm pretty sure that Nintendo treats their characters more like the Muppets, everything they're in is canon but whatever actually happened is just what's most convenient for this week.
