By far my favourite album of theirs. Tbh maybe my favourite album ever but I'm biased af because of nostalgia. I've heard it all the way through so many times that I memorized every little guitar and bass part and can hum them when they come lol. It's just so captivating and entertaining to me and I think it's because of the amout of layers and effects in the guitar and backing vocals. It makes it feel so rich and full. I love John's contributions most of all, I believe this is his absolute magnum opus as an artist. I love this band mainly because of the instrumental side, I'm not a huge fan of Anthony but I don't even mind him because it makes me focus further on the instrumental side. Even with that, I do love the vocal chemistry John and Anthony have when they harmonize, that shit sounds so sick to me. This album and Slane Castle (I will never stop bringing it up lol) are the peak of this band and I really believe you will enjoy that live performance. The atmosphere, emotions and performances are some of the best ever. If you thought that snippet of a live show was cool in the Snow video, you have no idea what's coming in Slane. I hope it happens soon, even if it consistantly gets cooked in the polls as per ush.

Yo at this point I’m gonna watch your reaction to the Snow music video on repeat and pretend it’s you reacting to Slane 😭

Sage, I think if you love this album! The getaway is also really good! A little shorter, but first two songs are peak!! And also the longest wave, sick love, and Death of a samurai

RHCP are one of my favourite bands, but they definitely take a few listens to start really enjoying their music (their albums are way too long). I think it's a mixture of how good they were at that moment, and the fact you've listened to 3 albums by them already, that you enjoyed this album so much. I'd be tempted to say that if this was your first album by them, you wouldn't have liked it nearly as much

Oh you gotta react to some of their live concerts. Off The Map is their 2000 tour and it's also a concert film which you definitely react to. Also Live at Slane Castle but I would start with Off The Map first ;)

About the Audio Commentary: There is a longer version of it on YouTube that has video as well. The band talks about each song on the album for 2-5 min each. If you’re going to react to anything it should be this one (It's an hour long though so if it's too long you can skip the songs you don't care about or save it for a stream or smth): https://youtu.be/LW_NmNe3Juk?si=wa5zSiTfmOhDEehZ About the Hump de Bump video: Chris Rock is a friend of the band. They asked him to direct a video for them and he agreed on the condition that the band themselves be the only white people featured in the video. The reason he only had a cameo was because he was in the director’s chair. This is by far your most positive reaction to the band and it makes me happy because this is definitely my favorite album of theirs. They took the raw energy of Blood Sugar, the pop-hooks of Californication and the beautiful melodies of By the Way and integrated it all together on this record. Looking forward to disc 2 next week.

amazing album imo, they were so good live around this time, you can sense it just watching the music vids but they had personality and put everything into their shows at that time

I don't like RHCP, basically at all. But the instrumentals and production on this album are amazing. Never has such great music been so poorly served by a vocalist as on this record. 'Hey' is such a good example. It's so good. So good. And then Anthony sings. And then John's solo is amazing. And then Anthony sings again. I feel like this for the rest of the album, too.

The audio commentary is worth watching. It’s actually on YouTube so you can watch it and not just listen to it

Theres also a video of John explaining how he got the tone and effects on Dani California, it also shows how he kind of produced and arranged the song. https://youtu.be/eE3dUUj4_4Q?si=jdDqa0U_p9iE5g85

Finally someone appreciates the absolute peak Hey is on the instrumentals. It's so fucking good that I forget that Anthony is butchering that song. Also John's solo in that shit makes me transcend, insane instrumentals. Image if you gave that to Jill Scott or Erykah Badu instead.

"What happened?" This album was made at the literal prime of their lives. On top of coming out clean from rehab (among other things), they were on a creative high. In fact, they created 40+ songs in the sessions of this album (some of which were later released in B-Sides). I'll let you explore the personal stories that inspired some of these songs, but they add tons of meaning to an already incredible album. This album really screams "life is good," while still exploring some dark stuff. Snow (Hey Oh), Wet Sand, and stuff from Disc 2 mean a lot to someone like me who is still recovering from a rough past.
