some chinese dynasty/rankings clarification @meesh/dee on the chinese culture of it all: Lihua, the one who was sick and her baby boy died, she's not "the empress". She's a concubine, just like Lady Gyoukou (from the jade pavillion, where maomao rests now), and they're all currently in the "Rear palace" where they're basically an adult-activities area to please the emperor and the have children. There may be an empress, or they may not be an empress that's married to that emperor. If Lihua was GOING to become the new "emperess CONSORT" it means probably that the emperor doesn't haven an emperess right now and the mother of the first born SON heir would become the empress by proxy as the Emperess Consort. Normally, one of the concubines is selected to be the next empress if she produces a male heir to the emperor. But since we know the emperor's children all died so far, and the only baby he has right now is Lady gyouku's daughter, then both the courtesans Lihua and Gyoukou are technically considered on the same level if you remove all other influences and external forces and personal preferences. In terms of titles, they're both the same. Lihua MAY have been mid-transition to become the Emperess Consort had her newborn male boy survived the first couple of months of fatality risk (which was even higher back in the day). But she's not Emperess Consort anymore (or at all), and is the same rank as Gyouku now/again. Think of it like 2 are lawyers in a company. All the lawyers are representended by hte courtesans in the rear palance, some are low ranking, and new hires, and mid ranking lawyers, and some "high ranking concubines" are the equivalent of "partner lawyers" at a firm. They're still lawyers and do the same kind of work MOSTLY, but they hold a higher regard and title for the firm/rearPalace. And you may also have something called the Emperess Dowager, which would be the emperess mother or widow of an emperor. So if an Emperor is alive, their mother would be the Emperess Dowager because she's the window of the former emperor by bloodline. And if the current emperor was dead, then his mother no longer holds rank, but his widow will hold the the Emperess Dowager Rank. That title is irrespective of the actual "emperess" rank while the seat is not filled. It's the equivalent of an old Lawyer firm partner, that was a founder of the firm, and split off and started a sister company that isn't a rival to the firm/throne, but is held in respect amongsts the partner and they play golf or squash once in a while, even thought they're not part of the firm anymore, or retired etc. I just wanted to clarify that. The reason why the doctor was told to prioritize Lihua's baby birth and health of baby is PURELY because her baby was a BOY, a male potential heir, otherwise if Gyouku was the one that had the male boy, hte situation would have turned the other way around for Lihua, since they'd share similar titles and opportunities ( IF the emperor is being fair in his mood swings).
