Scar’s brother did extremely advanced research by combining Amestrian alchemy and Xingese Alkahestry. He managed to encode the full process (deconstruction + reconstruction) into two tattooed arrays on his arms. Because of this, his research was likely on the same level — or even beyond — alchemists who had seen the Truth (like Edward, Alphonse, and Izumi). Instead of specializing (fire, ice, weapons, etc.), he created a broader, more complete system by merging two traditions. Scar, however, only has the deconstruction half. That’s why he can transmute without drawing circles — the tattoo acts as a pre-made array — but he can only destroy, not rebuild. We see this limitation when he tries to destroy Edward’s arm, and Ed counters with reconstruction. Their energies cancel out. Now about Kimblee... He uses Explosion Alchemy, and his circle is split between both palms. The circles superimpose, completing the array and activating the reaction. He destabilizes matter into highly reactive components, causing it to explode. His clap works like a detonator switch.
