I've been thinking.
I shit you not. That is quite rare for me. But it's been on my mind quite a lot recently. I don't know about all of you, but I look back at my older content and, art-wise, it's just very ugly. Poor lighting (I mean my lighting is still terrible, but it's significantly better than what it was), poor animations, and of course, some old models for some characters, Daphne and Morgana as an example.
I keep thinking about doing a remaster. Now, I know what you're going to say, we all think it. Remasters are bad. Why are they bad though? Just because no new content is being made? Sure that's undesirable, but I don't think it's necessarily a "bad" thing.
So, I was wondering what all of you think? The plan isn't to remaster the whole game, but basically all of 0.1-0.3 (ending just after date night with Sophia). I do envision it would take a fair amount of time, probably an entire update cycle, it could also take a couple of months.
Please choose an option on the poll what best suits you, but please be pragmatic, engaged and level-headed thinking with your decision. I will take it all on board.
I wish I had some sort of comparison to show you what it'd look like, but I'm lazy. And I'd rather get your guys opinions on it first before I start planning properly. I know whatever decision I decide to go with won't please everyone, but nothing in this world does.
(None of this would start, if it is to start; until 0.9 is out of the door)
As always, feel free to voice your opinions in the comments as well.
Throughout development I did tinker with some previous scenes, so I can show those as a comparison, but also be aware, these were done a year and a half ago. (And they wouldn't be remastered again, unless I thought they needed it)
Take care,
RogueOne.

Tbh the game is already popular and everyone here only wants more content, i also would definitely play the remastered version if it is released AFTER the game is finished
I would say Finish the Game first, THEN go back and remaster it.
I'm fine with a remaster but I feel like finishing the game first would be better. That way you can take player's feedback , correct issues and more as you do the remaster of old content. Just my thoughts tho, idk what it's like to make a game.
Remaster once you e completed it
What if you had someone working on remastered renders on the side and you stitch them in over time with updates as you approve them?
I've some unsolicited advice (sorry) for you. I've been down this road a bunch of times with my friend's projects: that way lies a thousand unfinished games. By the time you redo your old work, you'll have gotten better and you'll have the desire to redo it /again/ because you know you're now capable of even better things. You'll never, ever be completely satisfied with a thing you make. It's the quintessential artist's curse, my friend. You must fight it. I'm not telling you to give up on your pride or your integrity as an artist, mind you. You should still care about the quality of your work! Just get used to never *quite* living up to your own expectations; you'll always be getting better and pushing yourself further.
If everything in your early game looks like those before and after pictures, I'd definitely do a remaster, it seems well worth the effort.
I just finished replaying, start to current. Morgana and Daphne definitely standout, where they appear. Obviously I don't know the nuances of the task, but it seems like, if you were to limit the task to *only* reproducing the stills, as they already appear, but with new models. Maybe you could update them in the background, one scene per episode?
I think it's better to finish the game and then make something new in with your new skills.
Respect man but '' Remastered '' for the finished games , you have to do finish the game , add to much think when the game finished u can do remastered and when u wanna do dlc ( like fresh woman / julia in japan for example ) u can do remastered and later more quality dlc's this is probably the best option.
Its not necessarily a terrible idea, and its coming from a good place. But I agree with the overall sentiment that in terms of process and priority its best to make the thing THEN apply additional polish. Otherwise you will remaster now, and then when the game is finished and your art has improved even MORE youre just gonna be here wanting to remaster again anyways
Your game is already successful without having been remastered. People mostly want content, not just an update to the lighting and colors. Better lighting alone won’t make your game more successful. Besides, many games that are far less visually impressive and less polished still succeed because they offer strong content and solid gameplay. Gameplay and content should come first; graphical quality comes after. And as some people have already said, a remaster usually happens when a game is finished or starting to feel outdated. That’s not the case with your game.
Did you seriously need this remaster ?
I counted, I backed 37 different projects from various creators through the years and when they start down the remaster hole, the project never moves forward because they lose most support. I understand that you want to improve what you already made, but what others said is true. You remaster a finished project, not one in development.
If you feel you are able to improve old content significantly now, imagine how much better you will be by the time the game is finished
I don't think a remaster is a very good option, because we enjoyed playing the older versions of the game as well. Continuing with the project now would be a better approach. Where's the new version anyway? lol :D
Tbh both options are liable but remaster is to elevate the final product, ofc i think remaster is needed but i'd say focus on making the game 100%
i love the idea of a remaster but i also think that you should first finished the game and then after that do a remastered. You can prepare it if you want, but train yourself on the nexts parts of the game to be even better with the remastered. LY - Axel
If you want to make a remaster, finish the game first. If you want to improve it, focus on the next installment first. Then later, you can improve what’s already there. So please finish the game first
I've already restarted the AVN once the saves were broken. IMO - a remaster that eats an entire dev cycle adds nothing for someone like me since I don't plan on revisiting those scenes for a third time anytime soon. If you are trying to publish the AVN for sale (not sure if you can do Steam or GOG for example) and you need to do the remaster to improve your AVN prior to sale, then that is a $ decision. How many of your $ supporters will continue their support at their current levels for the 6-8 months it takes to do the remaster. I think you lose some momentum if you choose to take the time to rework the past instead of continuing the steady building of the future of your story.
Honestly looking at these photos a remaster isn't a bad idea. If you can combine it with making new content then why not but if you have to put development on hold then its not worth it. Especially because the game is still pretty early in the storyline. Not that much has happened so far so Id rather progress the game than work on remastering past content.
God no 😭 please finish the game. New scenes > prettier old scenes
I think if you choose to remake the early images, it would be best to do some promotion to get more people to play the game. If you can't attract more people to play, I think it's better to start remaking/refining the game after the game is completed.
[WARNING: The following may contain SPOILERS. You have been warned.] Funny thing is, in preparation for 0.9 (and my upcoming birthday), I decided to start a new play-through of the game, which I believe leaves me in a perfect position to offer some constructive feedback. So here goes: Yes, I significantly noticed the difference in art quality and, though very noticeable, I cannot say it has negatively impacted my enjoyment of replaying the game. I am currently at the part where I am about to begin punishing the school's principal in the office, so I believe I have played through the worst of it by this point. I would agree that finishing the game would probably be better. I can understand, and to a point agree with, your concern regarding the large difference in the quality, As the creator, you are probably feeling an irresistible urge to deliver a finished product that delivers better consistency in art quality throughout, which is actually a very praiseworthy desire. I just think doing so at this junction would probably not be best. I would actually suggest maybe leaving that for the very final step before declaring the game finished. I would also add to not attempt to a full "remaster" in the classic sense of that word, but rather do a "graphic quality update" just to bring those older images and renders more in line with the latter portions of the game. I believe that would probably produce the best results while at the same time being the most efficient use of your time and resources. I hope that helps. Cheers, and keep up the great work!
I would only consider doing the remaster if it didn't come at the cost of updates. Like if it's a side thing you are doing while continuing to work on furthering the game, sure, but it shouldn't come at the cost of that. As many have said, remasters are things you consider after the game has finished, specially if you already got a decent quality game at it's core already there. I know wanting to fix up older parts of your game is something you can't help as a creator. My friend is an AVN creator too and I help him with things to keep his progress going and so many times he feels he wants to go back to redo some things and I tell him the same thing. This how I feel on the matter.
as much as id like the early stuff to be remastered, id still rather get more story in before that, i want more morgana, so hope you finish then remaster the game
Ignore anyone that say's don't do it, If it is something that YOU feel you need to do then just do it, The only thing i would say is try and find a way you can do a remaster that you are happy with without slowing down the progress of the story too much, a few delays here and there should be acceptable by everyone, if people can't accept a few delays then FCK UM.
Hey bud, a normal dev cycle is around 150-270 days, so for those 150-270 days there will only be development time for the remasters, then once that is done and released it will take another 150-270 days to get any new content out (for v0.10 or v1.0 depending on what version number he used for the one after v0.9) In total it could be 300-540(1.5 years) days before any new content will be released
Personally I think progressing the story and finishing that up is more important. Once that's done you can focus on a remaster as much as you want. Doing a remaster when you're still in the middle of developing the current game is kind of odd, to be honest.
I don't mind remasters as long as it doesn't slow the end product
Any long term project like this is going to see changes in art style and skill -- AVNs, long running comic strips, you name it. It's natural and completely expected. And an inside story to the art -- seeing it change and improve over time. Every artist I've ever heard discussing it says they hate looking back on their own older art, no matter what anyone else thinks. I would hate to see you get caught in the trap of never finishing something -- especially something excellent -- because you're never satisfied with the entirety of what you've created. I'd love to see you bring this to completion, joining the all-too-few quality artists who have accomplished this, before you indulge yourself in endless polishing.
I personally dont mind polishing whats there, as i usually take some time to revisit and maybe replay the game then, so it might be cool. also you can learn a lot or polish your General vision going forward by revisiting older stuff. you do you. Its a creative process and everyone thinks differently. do what you enjoy most. But having people that pay to support the game and having the (understandable) expectation for more content will weigh in/change your direction. but as long as you dont pull a summer memories or a monster island im personally Happy
and those new renders look peak, nice!
A lot of devs are/have done suicide by remake; please dont join them
Finish telling your story then go back and remaster if it’s something you’re still interested in. Don’t get on that remaster train take what you have learned and put it into a new project. That’s my opinion. I’m bad about editing my writing I had to stop editing until I’m finished.
Im for just keep going. Too many devs get stuck with remaster. I believe you can always remaster later after you get more into the game. You can always improve things and then you get stuck so easily in this loop... its not worth it for now
I remember that there are some games that had similiar problems, that at some point quality very much improved, and devs tried to remaster it during development, thus throwing the game into hellpit of no updates. I dont think it even looks that bad, the game is still good and as long as quality stuff keeps coming in future updates its all good. Maybe just put a disclaimer when starting new game that quality improves as player progress through the game?
Make a "Gold edition" later and release it on steam or something.
hard no, remastering always messes with the development and as others said do it at the end if you really want to
Remasters definitely look better and would be welcome - HOWEVER, this is only if the time and effort to make those changes don't impact the time required to create future updates. Focus on producing new content/updates should be the priority
I agree that remasters look better. But unless one regularly goes through from the beginning, most of us (or at least many of us) don't have your eye. More material is better.
Prefiro que termine o jogo primeiro, depois sim lança uma remasterização, amo seu jogo o dos melhores que já joguei, fico feliz todas as vezes que chegar uma atualização ♥️
Keep going for now, down the line you may find new techniques that give you similar thoughts all over again.
Not worth it imo. The start is decent enough and it's nice to see the improvement over time. I think the same thing about other games that are rough at the start, like Cosy Cafe.
Finish the game then consider going for a remaster if you are not bored with the game. Do not fall for the remaster trap.
The game isn't "mastered" if it isn't finished.
You do you. If it makes you happy, you have to know the majority of us will like it as well. Thanks for the update, be safe out here.
Honestly, if you wanted to do a two new then one remaster cycle? It would let you spend time on keeping the story going while also letting you revise the earliest content to a higher quality. Making those changes are excellent professional development opportunities to let you grow in your craft. It also lets you kind of take a break from the creating new content so your creative juices can reset, yeah?
i actually kind of like seeing the progress a creator makes as they continue to develop. it shows just how far they have come and how much they are learning.
I honestly did not give much weight to the visible changes as I progressed through the content. Things are looking better every update, sure. But that's due to your own improvement and experience with the tools and software available to you. And your own artistic style. Don't get distracted from your story. We artists judge our work WAAAAAAY too harshly, and usually never in a good light. So, don't fall into that trap. OR, get yourself OUT of that silly hole, and focus on the good stuff you've done, and the work you are proud of. And keep at it!
"The plan isn't to remaster the whole game, but basically all of 0.1-0.3" While screenshots are lookin' good and remastering can do good - its almost always getting the devs into endless loop of remaking and strive to perfection will just drag you deeper into a loophole. While voting for a remaster, I, personally only support the idea if you can control yourself and split work by 20% max(remastering old content)+80%(creating new content). All this is while as existing player, I most likely will not replay old Ep's so I'll not have any gains from a remaster, but a new players will.
I am all for a remaster, with the caveat that I'd prefer 3/4 of your effort be on adding content, and the last 1/4 towards remastering. Work on completion but maybe add 1 remastered scene at a time, maybe?
I think you should remaster after you finish it. You will continue to improve as you keep working on this thing so if you remaster now, you might end up dissatisfied again later on and remaster it again and again. So i say you should just do it one time when everything is complete.
I'm not sure about the rest of the fan vase. But, you would def make more fans and money focusing on upgrading the game's content as opposed to revamping the current artwork. The current artwork is good enough imo.
I feel that you should start the remaster once you start going into end-game. I honestly feel the artwork right now is good enough and the s*x scenes are pretty satisfactory. For now, you would def make more money making more content.
Wanting to remaster is fine but they are a curse so many games do it people lost interest or game gets abandoned. While never getting to what everyone is waiting for save it for when game is complete. I personally love it as it is now tho.
(oops!) I don't presume to know anything about any technicalities such as remastering video artwork. However, as a person with possibly mild obsessive compulsive disorders, I do know that a soul who feels providing quality work in order to feel satisfied is essential. If you feel so strongly about this enough to ask our opinions then by all means remaster the artwork and/or lighting so that you may enjoy more satisfaction. Presumably this visual novel is a labor of love (as well as keeping the lights on) and as such should be indulged. I don't know about others, but this is an attitude I truly respect. That means that even if this should take longer than some would like I for one am patient enough (even at my old age) to await your proposed work. For me, the Latin phrase ars gratia artis is still relevant. Now I need to get off this soap box and get back to your game. Thank you for all your efforts and this little opportunity to express it so that you may find more motivation and joy working. Sincerely, DST1RBD/DST2RBD (yeah, kind of split personality, sorry)
Hi. Just took a look today and saw this conversation about some remastering. I don
do all art going forward in the new / prefered style, exchange the older art later. don't let the remaster hinder actual story and game release progress
Just keep working on it for now; you can remaster it when you're finished. By then, your knowledge, skills, and technique will have improved even more.
I am against a remaster in the way its presented. A remaster can be good, but doing it at the cost of a full updates worth of development time is a bad idea. Leaving your current supporters without new content for that long is a good way for people to move on from a game. If you continue updates normally, but remaster a scene or two with each update that would probably be best. Take minimal time from the update, but eventually everything will be up to par. Do a few of the first scenes with a message before the game starts saying the first couple scenes reflect the later quality of the game, and then you can either pick the scenes that are the worst in your opinion or just expand the beginning remaster until it catches up. You could even start at the end of where you want the remaster to stop and work backwards so once the lower quality ends its done forever instead of having a longer stretch at the beginning, a dip in quality, and then back up.
All for a remaster. Once you’ve reached the end of the games life cycle. Cause I’m sure there will be more improvements…. And then you can do it one go whilst starting up the next project. But for now keep the content coming. It’s easier to recommend a new chapter that was great content than it is to say “he made the earlier bit look prettier” The new renders look great, so maybe start at 0.3 and work backwards so that you slowly add a handful per content update. That way if you do an extra week of them after a few updates it’ll be done.
Honestly, i like it when tbe beginning / first scenes are "worse" quality than the newer updates. It shows a growth and decication to the project from devs.
I think new content should be the priority. You can remaster at the end.
I think the new renders in the comparison look fantastic and I think Zetan from Desert Stalker does what you are thinking about. Updating the renders of older versions while updating the current game that's still not finished. No one over there is angry about that. If it's possible for you to manage doing both simultaneously then I don't see an issue with it, despite the criticism I'm reading here. How about this: When you're done with 0.9 you could start working on 0.10 and the 0.1 remaster at the same time?!
Honestly my biggest issue wasn't necessarily the visual quality with the earlier content, but rather with story telling. And I recall you've addressed some of it already (I didn't replay it though to confirm). The latest content is certainly a lot better and I think it'll attract larger audience if earlier content was higher quality. I started the game like 3 to 4 times before I made any meaningful progress. I did vote for remaster, but I'm wondering about the timing of it. Maybe spread the work out over longer period of time or something.
I kinda like the idea of updating the graphics and content you have now, then when the process is done, remaster the old stuff. OR.... you could do it in more of an Agile process. Parse out all the updatable story elements and add one or two into each major release. A little extra work while also pushing out more content. Better as a whole for your customer base, and will eventually update everything. I personally really want to see where the story elements go, and would rather wait less. Just my 2 cents.
The images on the right look better in my opinion, I do agree that the game should be made first and then if you want to remaster and make the animations or images better then it should be left for the final remaster
broski, the game is already good even exceed my limits of wut i normal think so... uknow wut u must
i always felt like devs remaster games because they're running out of ideas or "writers block" as they call it. everyone that already played the vn aren't worried about the past. but dont get me wrong like when the game is over it will look great. do whatever you need to keep the game going. in the long run that's all we want. whatever you need to do to keep it exciting and fun for you to create seems to work for other dev anyways. either way i look forward to your progress good sir.
The community is very divided, 50/50. In my opinion, if the remaster is going to look like you showed us, it's better to start now than later at the end of the game, because it's going to be a strange feeling to play it like this and then play it differently. Although I haven't had the pleasure of playing it, the remaster looks very good.
You seem to be suffering from a classic perfectionist trait haha. You'll get better as you make more content, practice makes you better. So polish your work after it's done, or you might not finish your project at all. ;)
didnt vote because i dont want to decide on either option. generally im open for a remaster, but the thing is that i have seen remasters with other games and in some examples it took years - because the dev either expanded the volume of the reworked content, was still not satisfied or whatever. well i guess its rather self explanatory how the more impatient subscribers might react to that and lets be honest the rework as described above wont magically turn the game into a visual blockbuster. but let me repeat it: generally im open for a rework - in the end its your game and you have to decide what to do with it, wether the majority of the subscribers agrees or not, its your decision.
Maybe finish the game first, and if you still feel the same way then I wouldn't mind a remaster version.
I’d rather have new content over making older content look prettier/better. I’ve seen too many devs decide to remaster early parts of their games, only to go close to radio silent and eventually burnout. Finishing the game and then remastering early parts of the game would be the better move
I definitely agree with the others. Finishing the game is more important I think. You can always remaster it later.
I understand 99% of you have played the game, because you're here, you also need to keep in mind the people that haven't played the game and will experience it for the first time. The game gets new players every day
Counterpoint: All games get new players every day, if you want an extremely popular one: Grandma's House, it's seen dozens of changes in quality from one part/version to the next and people still love it and I'd argue it's great to actually see how the creator improves over time. I'd take that instead of spending over ~150-270 days just to update the old renders for previous versions and have to wait even longer than that just to get to the next version with content updates and to forward the story. (NOBODY wants to wait almost a year+ just to get the next version/content for the game, they will drop this game and move on to something else, Summer's Gone almost got killed by it's update cycle) And you also have to think about how many times people that have followed creators that do remastered versions only to just fully abandon the game after months of radio silence or they just take advantage of their followers/subscribers and just keep collecting money for a product they're not actively working on. Remasters is meant for finished games, if you want to honestly update the old renders for the game, do it on certain days within the normal dev cycle (so you're continuing the game and have some progress for the remasters of the old versions)
I would say remaster but not how you described it. With each content update remaster some smaller part of 0.1-0.3 so in next four or five updates you will have it all remastered.
If you remaster it when you release it just make sure there is at least a mini update. You can always just update the animation in a new update as well do a few post on the new models a few polls and go from there
I personally say keep improving and once the game is finished go ahead this way you not only have a finished product for those that are on the fence or don't care as long as it stays good looking and they have the story but you can also have the whole thing in front of you to see every change and such you may want to make as a final edit
If the original renders were terrible, I could see it. But the first few chapters of this game are fine! Good, even. I actually like seeing an author evolve over time, with growing pains along the way.
Continuing the forward story updates is more important and maybe going back through the old updates to remaster some of it can be a "I don't feel up to do/think about X , I would rather just work on fixing old lighting scenes." Also if you only have one to two features or things you have learned to do differently it might not be worthwhile to spend time on remastering scenes 4+ times. If some scenes really bother you go for it, but just remember we really want the story to finish too. I am confident you'll figure out the balance that's right work schedule.
Can I choose a remaster but later? I mean if you say hey I'm still bad at X and you make more content what happens when you get better at X? Will you remake everything a second time?
We don't want Fates Collide 2.0 :(( Remaster it once it's done
Honestly, if you’re doing it before the 1.0 release it’s just a polish no? But yeah! If you’re dissatisfied with your work and want to do better, go for it. At the end of the day it’s better to not have regrets about it, even if the decision isn’t liked publicly.
Whatever your reasons, updates/remasters/tech updates have been poisoned by other developers and looks like an attempt to draw out the project for money or an exit door. I'm not at all saying that's what you're doing, but with this exact conversation often leading to 3 years before we even reach to current progress, it can look bad.
guess the problem is simple: With remasters, you do not attract the community you have today, you might even loose them. Especially if remaster means to switch to new engines a.s.o. and old saves do not work any longer. You only attract new people, who might enjoy the novel better in that way. I'm also for content. If you can do small remaster and add content, than it's the best
DPC of all people said it best: If you do a remaster mid-development, you're depriving it of the skills you're still going to learn while completing the game and it will just end with you not being happy with the remaster, because in a year or two, it will look ugly to you as well. Reworks/Remasters ALWAYS at the end, unless you're planning to majorly change the story as well.
I'll love a remaster 😝😝 take all my money
Bro please just continue don't remaster it it's already done and it's good just make it batter bro 💯
I think you should finish the game first and then you can remaster afterwards if you sill want to. Done is better than perfect
If you see things that can improve, and you feel like you can do those things without hurting yourself in the process, then I'm all for it!
yeah, finish the game, no hurrying or rushing anything just finishe what you have already planned andthe you should remaser
I honestly don't have a strong feeling either way. I can understand wanting to improve the early content, especially as that's what's going to draw in new players/potential Patrons. At the same time, I understand the current players' desire for there not to be delays in the current production. One thing you could do is to remaster over time. When you're bored or frustrated with rendering the current scene or fighting writer's block, stop and remaster something from the old content for a while. Depending on your workflow style it could be a good way to stave off burnout while not seriously impacting the game's development time.
Dew It 😂
I agree with everyone do the Remaster after finishing it will only just put more work onto you no point in doing stuff that doesn't really matter in the long run just get a finished product out and then work on fixing the lighting and any other issues that pop up, just ask your community for help with what could be better after finishing the game than just redoing everything in one go you will just end up burnt out and abandon the game, in the end because its too much work the game is stable and doesn't have any crashes happen often enough to warrant a remaster as well no point in fixing something that isn't broken just keep adding more content and once its done then do a remaster but that's up to you. My advice is don't do the remaster just yet do it when the game is in a completed state.
I got to agree with everyone in the comments finish the game then remaster
First of all, I apologize since English is not my native language. I think a remaster could be a good idea. You won't be able to please everyone no matter what you choose, but from the perspective of new players, it's a bit jarring to see the difference in quality between older and newer characters or environments. For someone starting the game today, it would be really nice to see that the game has maintained a consistent level of quality throughout. Also, at least from my experience, it's common to see game developers abandon their projects or take long breaks. Seeing that you genuinely enjoy what you're doing, want to keep working on the game, and are still looking for ways to improve it is amazing. Of all the games I follow, yours is one of the fastest to receive new content, and each update adds hours of gameplay. Because of that, I think a remaster would be a good idea. If you're concerned about the amount of time it would take, maybe you could split it into smaller parts. Sorry, I don't know if that would actually make things more complicated, but perhaps dividing the remaster and a major update into three separate releases, with the first remaster section launching alongside a preview of the update, could work. As I said, I might be completely off here and suggesting something far more difficult than I realize. I genuinely wouldn't mind waiting another year if it meant getting a remastered version of the game.
i´m simply too excited w8ing for more content. Doing a remaster right now would make me lose interest tbh
Not gonna lie, if you choose to do a remaster, then I'll just wait till the whole game is done to be back. While your updates are definitely high quality and worth the wait, if I've got to wait for a remaster in addition to that, I'm just gonna bounce. By the time it's all done, I'll probably need a refresher on the beginning of the game anyway and will get to fully enjoy the remaster along with all the other content I missed.
Hmm I voted for 'give me more content!' but kind of convinced myself to change my vote to 'give me remaster!'...it will probably be better for new people if the early game looks as best as it could. That said I also agree with the people that are against a remaster - you have to be careful not to go 'let me fix this...oh and this...and maybe add this thing...' and burn yourself out. I haven't had good experiences with people wanting to redo/touch on their work:)
As much as I like how good the remastered images look, I’d much rather have new content. It already takes long enough for updates to come out, which is to be expected, I’d rather not have to wait out even longer for content I’ve already seen and could go through right now, just better looking.
It's a tough spot to be in as a dev. Obviously you want your work to be representative of the quality that you can provide, but part of the journey for the player is also witnessing the improvement as time goes. A remaster would benefit the early versions, though as others have mentioned it can end up being a bit too much of a wait for new content. Maybe break up the remaster into smaller chunks that you split up over the next few updates?
Honestly buddy, I like your design style and the animations too, I don't think you need to start a remaster at least, not yet
I'm going to be honest here, your dev cycle is already pretty lengthy (not that I and many here minds). Doing a remaster at the same pace as your current dev cycle (half a year or more?) means no meaningful progression for what a year or more? That's asking for a lot of patience.
Personally I think you should wait until the game is done to remaster the beginning parts. While the newer content looks better, the older content isnt bad by any means. This is something a lot of developers seem to run into where they want to remake their beginning content while the game isnt finished and it usually does more harm than good because players lose interest in waiting, specifically because the remade content is for the most part the same exact stuff, just with better quality.
I think you're beginning content is really good either way and doesn't necessarily even require a remaster. Especially now that we are at a point where it feels like we are now starting to Really get into the more lewd stuff, I think people would rather see that than using an update cycle on remaking old content
Finish first, then polish
It sounds like you want to and part of that is likely pride in your work. I think a proud Dev is the best Dev. If a remaster gives you a boost to re-attck new content later on and fall in love with your project even more... Have at 'er. I can't wait for new content but I'll wait if it's the best for the long road ✌️
I personally voted for you to remaster (because it’s your choice to do whatever you want). However, nobody wants to get caught in a cycle of redoing everything every time skills/technology improve. Don’t let perfection be the enemy of done.
Remastering is for an outdated product that is done. Like the Ocarina of Time remaster. Remastering isn't something you do while still in active development because you will continue to improve constantly. Now it's 1-3, but then when you're another 4 chapters further, 4-6 won't hold up to your "current" standards at the time so you go back and remaster them too. It's a never ending cycle. Part of the charm of VN's like this is that you can see the improvement gradually happen, and it's going to be a big hurdle if chapter 4 doesn't match chapter 1-3 in quality, because you got better than you were at the time and reworked 1-3. It just becomes a wishwash of jumps and drops in quality and that turns people off more than lower quality renders in the start if the story is still good.
"Part of the charm of VN's like this is that you can see the improvement gradually happen..." That. +1 I can tell you, it wasn't the graphics that hooked me. And I still got hooked. It's great to see the graphics improve, and the story still going strong. Remasters are indeed for a finished product. Preferable with the old version still being available. (I thought about writing my own comment instead of a reply. But hey, it was 69 comments now - didn't want to disturb that! ;-)
You can do that but also remember that's what making the game special. Looking back at your old content making you remember how much you've progressed throughout your journey. Remaster it when you feel it's time to do it. And thank you for making such a great game
Personally I like to see what originally pulled me in remain. Above all, it shows the progress many devs go through throughout the development cycle of the game in its entirety. After the project is complete, a sort of Director's cut could be done instead?
Agreeing with this sentiment. I really love seeing talented people as they progress their game and how they improve. It's part of the charm of a hand crafted game and shows real art and passion which is lacking these days imo.
While I like the Idea of a remaster I think it would be better to finish the game first. Then once complete youll have no timelimit and can go over the entire thing and remaster/rework as you please
keeping new players coming is just as important as taking care of your current player base. if it takes a dev cycle and brngs more ppl into and more awareness of your game thats good for u and the game in thelong run
Little late for an April fools prank. Kidding aside, I understand the desire to remaster, but too many games have gone into remaster purgatory where the time between last new content update and the next new content update was so long that a lot of supporters have lost interest
Lol
id say finish the game, and then do a remaster. id certainly play it. hell 0.9 can't come quickly, let anlone a new version of the game. id suggest doing it but after the full release it out of the current game
I'm in for the remaster if you think it needs a few tweaks I'll respect your decision
Too many devs feel the same as you and then spend wayyyyy too long fixing every little thing and then burn out and don't post for almost 8 months talking to you wvm lol
Lmao 🤣
i like the ideal of a remaster for the game
The long and short of it is that most of the people who will finish the game in its hypothetical finished state will not see the early content again. We've been there, seen it, we don't consider it anymore. Once the whole thing is done, a fresh 0-100% play through benefits I suppose? But until the story is done, it just doesn't matter. Attracting new players is a worthy goal, and they will be influenced by the quality they see, but since the goal is to get people to *pay* for new content, that content really should be *new*
The people voting for a remaster aren’t even going to play it 😭 just finish your game. There is no point remastering something that isn’t finished.
Exactly
Remasters are for finished products.
I feel the same way
