🪲The Depths of Worldbuilding🪲

Happy Saturday everyone! This morning I devoted an hour and a half to sketching a quick design for a sub-terranean beetle that will be featured in my next few videos on the world of Banner of Souls. This "Skrud" Beetle has its own favorite food, a way to attract others of its kind, and a defense mechanism to blind its predators and make a scurrying escape. And as I've been designing this beetle, I've wondered why I am spending even a small amount of time on a little bug that doesn't have any real significance to the story I'm writing. And my takeaway is something I think might encourage you all in your own creative endeavors.

Even though a piece of your world might not have much significance to your main story, it's elements like these that you spend time thinking up and developing that add so much life and depth to your worlds. This beetle only came about because I needed an in-universe reason for a flower to glow in the dark. The flower was important to the story, but the beetle was important to me, and that's more than enough of a reason to spend a little bit of time taking delight in your own world.

So if you ever have an idea you like to add a small detail into your world, even if it isn't important to the larger narrative, it's always worth it to take a bit of time to add that detail in. Because it not only makes your world more vibrant, but it also keeps the joy in creating your own world alive.
