The Barony of the Screaming Forests: A Conclusion, Not a Goodbye

Hello everyone, EkhidnaWritez here, with news that's both an ending and a beginning.

After more than a year and some of the most-listened episodes on Patreon, The Barony of the Screaming Forests has reached its conclusion as a standalone side story. Before anything else: thank you, David. What began as a side story grew into one of the pillars of this universe, and that happened because David Orf poured a year of genuine heart into it. If you've spent hours in the Barony, you know exactly what I mean.

A word from David: >
David Here, I've got a lot of enjoyment out of writing the BoSF side stories, but due to the plans for the ongoing story line I must now leave it to EkhidnaWritez to continue, hopefully I will still get some input when we revisit the Barony. I do have a new project in the works, but I'll let you know when the first chapter is ready to go.

Now, the important part for the story itself: the Barony is not going anywhere. Everything that happened stands exactly as written. Nothing is being altered or retconned. As the main Black Ship storyline develops, it will be returning to the Barony regularly; the setting and its characters are being woven back into the heart of TBS rather than running alongside it. Concluded as a side story, but alive in the universe.

David stays on the team as part of the Debate Corner, and he's working on something completely new: his own project, outside the TBS universe. When it's ready, we'll be pointing all of you at it with a proper shout-out, because that's what this community does for its authors.

All of BoSF remains free to listen on Vox9, start to finish. And honestly, a full relisten before the main story returns there isn't a bad idea - David Orf's Vox9 Profile. And you can still buy David a coffee here on his Ko-Fi page.

Thank you for every listen, comment, and theory over the past year. The Barony was built by David and kept alive by you.

- EkhidnaWritez

When is it going to be turned into a cgi series? 😁😁😁

I really enjoyed BoSF. Super sad to see it go. I don’t have any series left other than TBS.

B
Brian Adams · July 30, 2026

@David Orf I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but I would also like to thank you David Orf, for all your wonderful hard work producing and entertaining us all with BOSF. I look forward to trying to ascertain your input in future Barony episodes with the TBS timeline chapters to come. If you have any non-TBS side stories on the go, please make sure they are well publicised so they may be taken up by the TBS community, like Douglas Heidland has been able to. Though I suppose unlike myself who thoroughly enjoys his separate worlds stories - I imagine a lot of others don't, and they are only interested in the TBS-ajacent story TOE series, because of the Principality characiand events. Still David, I believe they is an audience out there amongst the TBS community for non-TBS, non Principality stories from you. And I for one would welcome them.

Hopefully this is the conclusion of book 1 of many. I really enjoined the start of the path throughout the screaming forest.

The reddit page r/openHFY has many BoSF FAN stories. If you want to keep reading, I hope to see you there.

bugger, BOSF is 1 of my favorite side story and was hoping to see how Wyatts family were going to thrive living in Newtown and all the other characters and see how the first noble visitors get put in their place heres hoping that we do get a lot more BOSF updates and not just an after thought

J
Jack Shytt · July 27, 2026

I certainly agree. BoSF is my favorite part of TBSU, and think it deserves more than an occasional update in the main story *shrug*

J
Joe · July 26, 2026

Ahh man…… I really enjoyed the regular updates.

J
Jallop 79 · July 25, 2026

While I can see how SL might have up ended the direction David wanted to go with BoSF, it did ultimately bring it into line with how the rest of the Principality operates to a point. Especially since they only have 5 years to get the place up and running. It's just unfortunate that the 3 main authors couldn't come to an agreement on the direction the story/location would take. Especially since it was the only side story that could continue without really interfering with the main story and it's timeline. Now we have to rely on "updates" in the TBS main story line which honestly is a disservice to both stories. It's just another tangent that needs to be accounted for in the main TBS story. Hopefully the BoSF updates will come as small episodic releases that won't interfere with the main TBS releases.

J
Jack Shytt · July 27, 2026

100% agreed I truly believe BoSF could stand alone by itself, set a month or 2 behind the main TBS storyline without causing story line issues... it certainly is popular enough

C
Craig · July 25, 2026

Truth be told the Barony of the Screaming Forest 🌳 stories are my favorite to hear

T
Thomas Rice · July 25, 2026

Ok you give us about 30 minutes of story a week. Now you have canceled Barony of the Screaming Forests, Shore leave, What’s the job, Academy days and shortly trough other eyes. I am hoping once you decide to really focus on writing we may get 45 minutes of black ship a week. Maybe I am asking to much but we wait a week at a time for what is next and it becoming not worth the wait, just saying from one who has been very support of all the writers of the different stories of the black ship I am getting the feeling I’m just a commoner, Tom

T
Tador Hawkins · July 25, 2026

There some claiming to be writing BOSF stories we not having any of it .... 🛑 Stop it.... the official word is here posted by the chef himself 😄 let's have some loyalty.....

D

It's sad to hear David is stepping down as the main writer for the BoSF stories. His world building was second to none within the writing team of TBSU. His joyful stories and long format episodes will be deeply missed. Wish you well in future projects David!

M
Michael Meredith · July 25, 2026

I really enjoy everything, but think it better to have wyatts plan to eliminate titles. This will keep abusive nobles from visting, and require all of them to respect the ikanti.. maybe keep us up with the counts drazan experiments, and advise him to be more humble with commoners so princess clara will like him more. With a bit of character shaving, she and cynthia might even accept him.

I've often had the impression that long-running series eventually enter a new phase. At first, the story is carried by its hero. Later, the world itself has to carry the story. The pace slows, parallel storylines emerge, and the universe becomes the real protagonist. I'm curious to see which path TBS will choose. Wishing the whole team the very best.

J
JOHN BOZZELLI · July 24, 2026

good point, it's starting to go in that direction

T
Tuomo Vella · July 24, 2026

Wow. I’m honestly gutted. I didn’t expect to feel this much, but this story meant a great deal to me. I’m wishing you all the best, David, as you move forward. It feels like saying goodbye to friends whose struggles I carried with me, but life keeps moving, even when we’re not ready. For what it’s worth, your story is the reason I joined Patreon. The main plot was great, but it was the slow, careful building of a community, that quiet burn of connection, that truly hooked me.

J
Joebeckyemily · July 24, 2026

David - THANK YOU for the excellent writing and universe development! I truly loved the slow growth build of the characters as they lived thru the events of the day as a contrast to the hectic pace on the Noir Navio. Here’s hoping for a future spinoff to tell all the stories of the Barony and Hago. Truly looking forward to whatever comes next!!!

K
Kiz · July 24, 2026

Thank you David, while TBS AND WFJ WAS THE FIRE AND ADVENTURE, BoSF is the HEART AND SOUL. You will be sorely missed. Cene Mcintyre,, All my love from Qld Australia, you are welcome in my home anytime.

A
Alex · July 24, 2026

I am sure there are lots of reasons for this in the background. However I still feel the BOSF was best as a side story. As a side story it was able to add a huge amount of depth, making us all love the universe more, without slowing the pace of the main story. Looking forward to seeing how things continue.

S
SleepyJohn · July 24, 2026

I truly enjoyed the story, and I am saddened at it’s conclusion. I realize coordination of the numerous plot lines is difficult, but there were too many compelling characters. I hope you reconsider this decision. There are too many unfulfilled stories, and frankly I feel having this story takes a lot of pressure off the main TBS story to provide weekly content.

Linda · July 24, 2026

I will miss BOSF as a separate storyline. I look forward to see it folded into the original series.❤️❤️

It doesn't have to end 'end'. just come back to it from time to time. Say, Day 107 Rachels brother getting his comeuppance. Or Day 128, installation in the Firentice Gardens. Just come back to it from time to time.

Lord Orf, the BOSF is a most valued treasure on my playlist. Thank you for putting so much time, thought, and effort into creating it. You truly are a gifted Man whose works are valued by this community. I for one patiently await your own works. After what we have read from you so far…. The bar you’ve set it high and we expect nothing less from you because we know you’re value and it is great! Thank you again!

J

I would like to congratulate the whole team. This has been a fantastic part of the TBS experience. It has brought a higher level of character development to the story as a whole. More than any other part, it has really connected us readers to each character and we feel like these are real people that we know. It's the ultimate indicator of a writers abilities to achieve such a wonderful thing with us readers. Each and every person on the team has made this side story and the others and the main story absolutely perfect. If we had writing teams this talented in Hollywood our TV and film industry would not be in the dismal state it is in. I sincerely thank you all and look forward to more!

David, Any chance you would consider a story about another location set in the Black Ship universe? It could be something unrelated to the main story, maybe just a mention for the main story to set it off. Maybe a child growing up with stories of the great knight hero, The Wolfhound, and how they want to be like him. Something keep in line with the Principality but growing into this new era.
