This reminds me of a situation where my Marine unit was doing live fire training near an impact zone for arty. We were on base with an Army red leg unit of M777s. We were doing convoy ops in prep for pre deployment training when we felt the ground shake and the defending sound of explosions. At first we stopped and froze. It was like a switch was half way flipped into the up position and the lights were flickering. Then another few close booms rocketed our brains into war mode and we loaded racked, got into 5s and 25s, and waited for an enemy to approach and get turned to mist. Obviously the enemy never came, but it took even our Gunny to realize what was happening and he was pissed to say the least. Got on the horn and it was a good 5 minutes of danger close fire before it suddenly stopped. even though their rounds were still in the impact zone, we could see the dirt they kicked up which means they were too close to the edge of the zone and well within doctrinal danger close range of 1k meters. We found out later a unit of 7 guns fired were doing a fire mission and instead of adjusting fire 35 mils... They adjusted 35 degrees. If they had adjusted 2 more degrees, I wouldn't be here writing this message because I would've been blown to bits on American soil and not a single person in the country would've heard about it.

Good writing, of course, but the story was not to my liking. It seemed to only be about death, planned death. I am not fond of death. But the writing was good.

Taking leadership in the heat of battle and in circumstance with out hope is a difficult burden to bare. Unable to locate the enemy that has you under their sight and causing you losses leaves you little option but to force your men to keep moving. This is a modern day doctrine of battle under combat conditions. It doesn't make the job easier, just attempts to make it survivable. To discover your mission has been planned for anticipated and even allowed for your surrender is hard to accept. Learning the enemy was not even within range of counter attack would be totally defeating. Learning the enemy weapons ability to target from those ranges and with accuracy destroy enemy before they even knew they were attacked would also destroy unit morale and the mission success. Attacking an enemy that repeatedly falls into the same trap can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Discovering the enemy realizes the trap and uselessness in continuing to fight would be and is reason enough to stop the killing and allow them to surrender. This story of a leader in the field against a superior fighting force shared the view they faced and the decisions made that allow them to survive. Thanks for the story.

Insightful as always . Could have been any man in any land at any time in modern warfare . The hit then the report will freeze the soul of anyone on the receiving end . If you hear it , it wasn’t for you .

According to AI here's the math for my fellow nerds: "To cover 41 km in 2 minutes 11 seconds, you’d need a speed that’s far beyond anything achievable by current vehicles — we’re deep into sci‑fi territory here. 🚀 Quick Answer Speed required: ~1127 km/min, which is ≈ 67,620 km/h or ≈ 18.78 km/s That’s the short answer. Your required speed of 18.78 km/s divided by the speed of sound (~343 m/s at sea level) gives: Mach = 18,780 343 ≈ 54.8 What that means Mach 1 = speed of sound Mach 5 = hypersonic Mach 25 = re‑entry speed of the Space Shuttle Mach ~55 = well into super‑hypersonic, closer to the velocities of deep‑space probes than anything atmospheric" Of course this is also based on the density of air at sea level on Earth lol, juicy writing Scifi!

Was I the only one who tried doing the math on how far the shots were coming from? I was fairly spotty on, given the wiggle room for margin of error.

The Crack is instant... the boom is delayed.

H
Heath Hiscock · June 25, 2026

To put it another way the Crack comes from the bullet, and the bullet was 2ft from you head. The boom comes from the muzzle, and that's the shooter location.

Depressing. Thumbs down.

J
JasonB Lord Fury · June 26, 2026

I think melancholy is more accurate than depressing. It is still accurate but , and just my opinion melancholy because war and death are facts regarding conflict, anyone who has served may see the deeper part of the story? just trying to get you to a thumbs up, maybe listen again, try to see the layers in the story? just a different perspective?

any great story elicits emotion, the more powerful the emotion the better the story, I was left feeling melancholy. not saying it as a bad feeling but a feeling none the less. the story touches on parts of conflict that are personal and real, unlike a Michael Bay movie

Very good, I like your short story's. they make the week go by. thank you.

J
JasonB Lord Fury · June 25, 2026

I like the story, I wish their could have been a resolution like peace or cease fire. The story carries the emotional layer the many soldiers feel, defeat, unresolved feelings, rage and reassignment, very well done. The story also illustrates factors that are rarely recognized, like a respected comrade, the letter to a spouse and children that the soldier dyed well. very well done that his second died on his feet and felt no pain. To me that was the most powerful and sad part. As the saying goes, its better to die on your feet and not your knees

Is there a way to listen to new episodes of: “Tales from the Terran Republic”?

G
Grumpy57 · June 25, 2026

Hmmmm. Sounds like the author may have been under sniper fire before. The distances are not what is possible, because the current longest shot that resulted in a hit is less than 2 kilometers. So many factors, air pressure, wind, rotation of the planet are just there of the obstacles to overcome. 50 years ago a sniper shot rarely even a thousand meters. Well, in 300 or 400 years in the future who knows what is possible.
