Come dine with me....?
Well, I started by giving the room a lick of paint, but I guess I might have got a bit carried away..............
I transformed my dining room into an immersive smart room that can become any board-game world, haunted mansion, railway carriage, fantasy tavern, cosy restaurant or thousands of other scenes at the tap of a button.
This DIY dining-room makeover combines displays, Home Assistant, smart lighting, multi-screen sound, mini PCs and a custom locally hosted web app called Roomscape.
Together, they control digital artwork, music, animated weather, lighting, sound effects, family photos, educational displays and completely immersive environments.
I'm musing whether I should package this up somehow so others could pinch ideas/code, so I'd welcome thoughts/ideas! I'm thinking I could share some of my 'theme sets' so you can pinch the styles. I could potentially package the whole application if that's useful too!
But more importantly..... what board game, event or imaginary world should I create a Roomscape mode for next??!?!?!? Let me know and I can share my best efforts!!

I only do my own wiring with female connectors. The typically are from a wall to a patch panel. I purchase the male to male cables to patch either end. Male ends are more time consuming and problematic. I also only use Cat6A or higher rated cable. Cat6A supports 10GBE Copper connections in case I need them. In my current network I have 22 POE cameras terminating in 24 port POE Switch with a 10GBE unlink. That connects to a 10GBE switch. My storage server, compute server and Home Assistant server all connect to the same switch at 10GBE. The rest of the network is on another switch with a 10GBE unlink. This allows all the servers to move data around very quickly and takes the chattiest devices (cameras) off of the network segment where I work in most of the day. My point in bringing this up is that even after you get cabling done there's more planning to do to ensure that your devices are optimized for network connectivity and not slowing each other down.
One of your coolest projects so far, as a tech lover, this whole things appeals to me so much and can create so many different moods and atmospheres. Fabulous job.
We would love to see a way to create Harry Potter themed content. Perhaps views out the carriage windows approaching Hogwarts or a panoramic view of the castle.
Nice work, but im guessing that with your high level iq and skills your most comfortable around your kindred spirited folk. "Birds of a feather flock together" (Kipling) I think. I can see you and the "cats" dancing on the table while looking at multiples of you guys previously filmed and playing back in an infinitive loop like your center dance floor of a royal gala. LOl Can i please get tickets? My life is so not like your adventure. I love what I see and learn from you and your methods of teaching us non home assistant able folk. I think i need a beating. I guess you have heard about our pending or passed new york prompted printer laws? Should be summer soon for you maybe? cant wait to see your gardens and your refreshing skimpy warm weather attire. My adhd seems to go away when im watching you. Thanks for all your effort you put into your work we appreciate it,
I’ve wanted this capability for decades, the ability to synchronize multiple virtual windows to display my favorite art or photos but your implementation went far beyond my dreams. I’m retired IT guy from the early days of PCs (1970s) and now have plenty of time and hardware on my hands. If you can point us to the software I plan of throwing one of these together before Halloween. My room only has space for 3 screens on one wall so the implementation should be simpler. Looking forward to as many details as you are willing to share. :-)
This is absolutely fantastic, and a lovely little present to see after being away on a work trip! With the changing pictures, especially the spooky ones: If you has a mm wave presence sensor, especially if you had one that could track multiple people, you could make the creepy pictures track you with their eyes... 🫣 Also you could do the same with with music or sound effects (and the wind generator), by sending extra sounds to the frame you want to use to scare someone? or set the correct fan to blow a gust... I'd offer to help with the wind generator, but I don't think it would be the right sort of wind... 😉
I think I found something similar although not free very impressive. https://atmosfx.com/products/unliving-portraits
Yes, those look great - as I say, happy to generate any cool ideas!!
The scary videos that you had on your demo, are these open source or available anywhere, they are very cool. These are the videos of old paintings that suddenly come alive! Amazing!
Hey Ian! Nah I just made all of those and more than happy to share - if there's anything particular you'd like I could make a custom set!!
I loved this idea! I'm going to try and put into my dining room! (It gets used 2-3 times a year during holidays)
Brilliant! Well let me know if there's anything I can help with or you'd like to pinch!!
I love the intro line, " I guess I got a bit carried away". LOL those that have been with you for a while have to chuckle at that statement. When do you EVER do anything on a normal scale? Your "Always in Pursuit of Excellence". Ps, you can use this tag free. HaHa Love you
😂😂. You know me so well, Rhett!
"I'm musing whether I should package this up somehow so others could pinch ideas/code......." This would be very handy, really interested how its put together! Hardware vs software (what frameworks did you use to build the web app) - how did you cue the hue lights to flash at specific points on the video.
I'm going to do a members extra video so I can dive into lots more detail and show off more bits - there's so much I actually haven't even covered, but I'll happily chat through the tech stack!
Really nice! How are you outputting to 3 sources at the same time ? Mini PC has 3 outputs (HDMI)? Or mixture of 1 x HDMI and 2 x USB-C ? Do you split in advance the video file using ffmpeg or similar ? Really impressive!
Exactly - annoyingly the mini pcs had one HDMI, on dp and one USB 4! But just needed converters and all fine. I did actually initially split, but realised I could skip that and so pre-splitting not required.
Totally stunning!
It's amazing what you can do with a boring dining room. Everyone wants to come play games at your place now. Very cool project.
Great video, and please dont feel you have to justify the cost. I might think to add a Trembler, like a mobile phone haptic. attache this to the table and also have vibration to thunder, jump scares etc.
Vibrations are an awesome idea!! Can't believe I didn't think of that!! I'll add that to my list!!
What a wonderful idea. Here are a couple of scenes that might be cool. Imagine a film crew in the monitors filming the family. Or being inside a zoo with guests looking into your enclosure. Also, Ticket to Ride has some great 3D prints to help you get organized. You could do a whole video on all the cool prints available for organizing your board games.
Brilliant ideas, Paul!! I love the idea, it could be like a Truman Show feel!! And zoo cages would be great for when it's feeding time at the zoo in my house! 😂😂😂 As for the prints...... there's an upcoming video planned on exactly that!!! 😉
