A primavera sempre foi uma época especial para a humanidade, marcada pelo renascimento da natureza e pela renovação da vida. Os dias começam a ficar mais longos, o frio do inverno dá lugar ao calor ameno, e os campos voltam a florescer, trazendo consigo uma energia vibrante que inspirou povos antigos a criarem festivais, rituais e mitologias em homenagem a esse período de renovação.

Spring has always been a special time for humanity, marked by the rebirth of nature and the renewal of life. The days grow longer, the chill of winter gives way to gentle warmth, and the fields burst into bloom once again, bringing with them a vibrant energy that has inspired ancient peoples to create festivals, rituals, and mythologies in honour of this season of renewal.

Desde tempos imemoriais, as civilizações viam a primavera como um momento de celebração da fertilidade, tanto da terra quanto da vida humana e animal. Povos da Europa, como os celtas e os germânicos, realizavam festivais para honrar divindades ligadas à terra e à fertilidade. O festival de Beltane, por exemplo, celebrado pelos celtas, acontecia entre a primavera e o verão e incluía fogueiras sagradas, danças e rituais para garantir colheitas fartas e proteger o gado. Já os povos germânicos reverenciavam Ostara, uma deusa associada à fertilidade e ao renascimento, cujo nome deu origem à palavra "Easter" (Páscoa em inglês).

Since time immemorial, civilisations have regarded spring as a time to celebrate fertility—of the land, as well as of human and animal life. European peoples, such as the Celts and the Germanic tribes, held festivals to honour deities linked to the earth and fertility. The Celtic festival of Beltane, for instance, was celebrated between spring and summer and featured sacred bonfires, dancing, and rituals to ensure bountiful harvests and protect livestock. The Germanic peoples, on the other hand, revered Ostara, a goddess associated with fertility and rebirth, whose name later gave rise to the English word Easter.

Os antigos gregos e romanos também enxergavam a primavera como um período sagrado, associando-a a divindades como Perséfone, a filha de Deméter, cuja volta do submundo simbolizava o retorno da fertilidade da terra. Em Roma, as festas da deusa Flora, conhecidas como Floralia, aconteciam no fim de abril e incluíam jogos, espetáculos teatrais e até celebrações mais libertinas para honrar o florescimento e a reprodução.

The ancient Greeks and Romans also saw spring as a sacred period, associating it with deities such as Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, whose return from the underworld symbolised the earth’s renewed fertility. In Rome, the festivals of the goddess Flora, known as Floralia, took place at the end of April and included games, theatrical performances, and even more libertine celebrations in honour of flourishing life and reproduction.

Na Mesopotâmia, os sumérios e os babilônios realizavam rituais grandiosos para marcar o equinócio da primavera, um dos mais importantes sendo o festival de Akitu. Durante essa celebração, que durava dias, os sacerdotes encenavam o mito da morte e ressurreição do deus Marduque, simbolizando a renovação da ordem cósmica e da prosperidade da terra.

In Mesopotamia, the Sumerians and Babylonians performed grand rituals to mark the spring equinox, one of the most significant being the festival of Akitu. During this celebration, which lasted several days, priests re-enacted the myth of the death and resurrection of the god Marduk, symbolising the renewal of cosmic order and the prosperity of the land.

Do outro lado do mundo, as civilizações mesoamericanas, como os maias e os astecas, também ligavam a primavera a eventos sagrados. Muitos de seus templos foram construídos de forma a alinhar-se com os solstícios e equinócios, e durante o equinócio de primavera, o famoso templo de Kukulcán, em Chichén Itzá, cria um efeito de luz e sombra que forma a imagem de uma serpente descendo suas escadarias. On the other side of the world, Mesoamerican civilisations such as the Maya and the Aztecs also regarded spring as a sacred event. Many of their temples were constructed to align with the solstices and equinoxes, and during the spring equinox, the famous Temple of Kukulcán in Chichén Itzá creates a play of light and shadow that forms the image of a serpent descending its steps. This phenomenon reinforced their religious beliefs and the connection between their gods and the natural cycles.

Astronomically, the arrival of spring is explained by the tilt of the Earth and its movement around the Sun. The spring equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, making day and night nearly equal in length. This moment marks the end of winter and the beginning of the season in which sunlight increasingly bathes the hemisphere that had been in darkness for months. This cycle has always been crucial for agriculture, as it signalled the time for planting and preparing for future harvests.

Ainda que os rituais antigos tenham perdido espaço para outras tradições, a essência da primavera continua a mesma: uma época de renovação, onde a vida se manifesta em todo seu esplendor. Seja através da simples contemplação da natureza, das festas modernas ou até de celebrações que resgatam antigas tradições, a chegada da primavera sempre traz consigo a promessa de um novo começo.

Though ancient rituals have largely faded in favour of other traditions, the essence of spring remains unchanged: it is a time of renewal, where life unfolds in its full splendour. Whether through the simple contemplation of nature, modern festivities, or even celebrations that revive old customs, the arrival of spring always carries the promise of a new beginning.
