Do you want to make games?

Hey!!

So many of you have told me you want to make your own games, so let me answer this one properly:

What’s the best tool to model characters for a game?

My honest recommendation is Blender, and not just because I use it.

There are specific reasons it matters for games:

*Export that actually works.*

From Blender you can send your character straight into Unity or Unreal without fighting file formats, broken textures, or weird conversions.

If you've ever tried to move a 3D model between programs, you know what a nightmare that can be.

Blender is built to take your characters outside of Blender, so this part just works.

*It covers the whole pipeline.*

A game character isn't just a model.

It needs clean UVs, a rig, and animations to actually be usable in an engine.

Blender does all of that in one place, so you end up with something that's genuinely game-ready, not a pretty statue you then can't move.

*Add-ons for the boring parts.*

Once you've got the basics, add-ons automate the repetitive stuff (batch exporting, rigging helpers, and so on), so your time goes into the fun creative work instead of fighting the software.

*It's free.*

When you're already learning an engine, art, and probably some code, the last thing you need is another expensive subscription.

Blender being free means every cent goes into your actual game.

Other tools can absolutely get you a model.

Blockbench is brilliant for Minecraft/Hytale modding, and PicoCAD is great for a stylised look.

But Blender is the one built to carry a character all the way into a real, playable game.

If you've wanted to start but Blender felt like too big a wall, I just rebuilt my entire free Blender resource page from scratch.

I agree with you, I have tried it and it is relatively smooth and easy to use.

The add-ons are the best part. So many tools available from others who have come before us, the beauty of an open source software!
