Kidnapped Mermaid - Complete Blender Sculpting Course
Kidnapped Mermaid: Complete Blender Sculpting Course (77 Real-Time Lessons)
๐ฅ I'm Marat, a 3D character artist, YouTuber and streamer. In this course I show you how to sculpt a complex scene with two stylized antagonist characters: a beautiful, vulnerable mermaid and the villain shark.
This course was inspired by the incredible artwork of 2D concept artist Alex Shatohin.
You will see the full process with absolutely no skips. I start from an empty Blender canvas and go all the way to the final presentation, renders and even a bit of compositing. Every step is narrated and recorded in real time. No timelapses!
This time I kept the lessons short on purpose: 77 lessons, around 20 minutes each. You can watch one in a coffee break, and you always know where to pick it up tomorrow.
All in Blender, free open-source software. No extra tools to buy: the two add-ons I use are free as well and included in the course materials.
๐จ What You'll Learn
โข Create a complex 3D sculpted scene from 2D concept art
โข Sculpt a stylized female character from scratch: head, torso, hands, hair, fin and accessories
โข Sculpt a male creature: a shark monster with gums, teeth, claws, scars and heavy anatomy
โข Female and male anatomy side by side in one project, so you actually feel the difference instead of reading about it
โข Pose two characters together so they read as one story, not two models in a row
โข Vertex painting: color both characters without touching a single UV
โข Add a decorative tattoo to the mermaid's shoulder
โข Lighting, materials, render setup and final compositing, all inside Blender
๐ What's Inside
77 lessons, in the order I actually work. Nothing is rearranged for the camera:
References and blockout: head, torso, lower body, shoulders, arms
Hands: analyzing hand anatomy, then sculpting feminine hands and fingernails
The head: sculpting in three passes, opening the mouth, eyebrows, lashes, teeth and tongue
The shark: blockout, hands, legs, posing, chain and bracelet
Bringing them together: placing the mermaid in the shark's mouth and working the pose
Hair: blocking out, the free Bevel Curve add-on, strands, rags and refining the base
Detailing: shark's mouth, body, head, tail and claws; mermaid's fin and tail; scars everywhere
Painting: vertex painting both characters, color variation, the tattoo on the mermaid's shoulder, decorating the bra
Presentation: render scene, materials, background elements, lighting, compositing and turntable animation
Plus a bonus set of lessons on setting up Blender for sculpting.
And one lesson I care about more than most of the others: how I cut render time significantly without losing quality. That one will pay for itself on every project you make after this.
๐ง Why This Course Works
I don't just show you what to do. I show you how, and explain why at every step.
โ You see the parts that go wrong too: the mistakes and the fixes stay in
โ Two characters in one scene, so you learn male and female anatomy in the same project
โ Short lessons, one idea per video: easy to follow, easy to come back to
โ You're not copying a result, you're watching the decisions that lead to it
โ You finish with a complete, rendered, portfolio-ready scene, not a grey sculpt on a grey background
โ If you use ZBrush or Nomad, the sculpting logic transfers. Only the buttons are different
๐ฆ What's Included
โข 77 fully narrated real-time video lessons, 24 hours 50 minutes in total
โข Final .blend file of the scene with both characters and the render setup
โข Reference PureRef file used throughout the course
โข The tattoo image used on the mermaid
โข Two free Blender add-ons used in the course: Bevel Curve Tools and BlenderKit
โข Lifetime access, learn at your own pace
๐ก Skill Level: Intermediate. Beginners can follow too, but it is much easier if you already know some human anatomy, Blender navigation and the sculpting UI.
๐ Software: Blender 4.5.2, free
๐ง Audio: English voice-over
๐ Format: video lessons you watch on Patreon, in the browser or the Patreon app. Project files are downloadable.
๐ One scene, two characters, every single step on camera. Let's build it together ๐ช
A bit more about me: my YouTube channel has over 250 videos about sculpting in Blender and 11,000+ subscribers, and I have teaching experience at one of the leading international computer graphics and animation schools.

Hi Marat. I purchased the course and I'm sure I'll enjoy it very much, but at the start I faced two issues: 1. The description states "Format: downloadable mp4 video files". I don't see such files. Assuming I didn't miss anything, is it another remnant from ArtStation courses descriptions that isn't relevant to this course? 2. There's a big problem with the closed captions. They are auto-generated, which is fine of course, but for some reason they are often not in English. I checked the first few lessons and in some the captions were in English as expected but in others the captions were only in Slovenian or in Korean. I assume this is not your fault, but please contact Patreon and ask them to "re-calibrate" the closed captions for the entire course so they are all in English. As the lessons are not downloadable it's more important because I and other students can't generate closed captions locally. I don't intend to cancel my purchase because of these issues, but if at least one of them can be resolved, it'll be nice. Thanks.
Hi Amit, thank you for buying the course and for the detailed feedback. 1. You are right, the downloadable mp4 line is a leftover from the ArtStation description. On Patreon the lessons are streaming only. I removed that line, sorry for the confusion. The project files in the Resources post are downloadable. 2. Thanks for checking the captions. Patreon picks the caption language automatically from the audio, and on some lessons it got it wrong. I will ask Patreon to redo them in English. If they cannot, I will upload English captions myself for those lessons. I will update you here.
Hi. Is "This course is also available in the 3-in-1 "Full Character Pipeline" bundle" correct? If so, where can this bundle be found? Thanks.
Hi Amit, thanks for catching that. That line is left over from my ArtStation store (where I am not selling the course right now) and it should not be in this description. I am removing it now, sorry for the confusion. On Patreon the course is sold on its own, $47 until 27 September, then $67. But if you want more than one course, there is a way. My Creator Boss membership is $49.99 a month and it includes Kidnapped Mermaid, Stylized Female Body Blockout and Stylized Female Heads together, plus everything else I post here. So for roughly the price of the single course you get all three, for as long as you stay. Hope that helps. Ask me anything else about the course ๐๐ป
