Art Director’s Guide to Environment Design for Beginners (Full Book for Unreal Engine 5)
Start Thinking Like an Art Director When Building Environments in Unreal Engine
This is a free 39-page e-book where I share how I approach environment design after spending more than 20 years in the game industry.
It’s everything I know about building gorgeous, intentional environments, not by guessing, not by throwing assets together, but by thinking clearly about why a scene should look the way it does.
This book is not long because I like writing.
It’s long because it’s highly visual.
You’ll see examples, breakdowns, and references throughout the book, so you never have to guess what I mean when I talk about composition, lighting, scale, or mood.
About Author
My name is Ivan Yosifov. I’ve been building games for over 20 years.
I’m the Co-Founder and Art Director of Seven Bulls Games. Our most successful title, Counter Attack, has been played by 30+ million players worldwide and has generated over $1,000,000 in revenue as an indie project, without external investment.
Over the years, I’ve shipped 150+ mobile and PC games, worked with major publishers like Voodoo and CrazyLabs, and published a game with Electronic Arts earlier in my career.
Today, I’m focused on teaching, sharing real production workflows, and building new games under my current studio, CGDealers.
I started my career as a 3D generalist, working across environments, materials, lighting, VFX, animation, UI, and technical art.
At 17, I worked with a Hollywood-based animation studio, which shaped how I think about visuals, composition, and cinematic presentation. Since then, I’ve continued to approach game development with an art-director mindset, focusing on clarity, atmosphere, and intentional design.
In this book, I teach environment design the same way I approach my own projects, combining strong visuals, clean structure, and practical systems that actually work in production.
Why I Created This Book
I see the same problem again and again with beginners.
They start by collecting assets, place details everywhere, and hope the scene will “come together later”.
Sometimes it works.
But most of the time, it doesn’t.
The result often feels messy, inconsistent, and unfinished, even when high-quality assets are used.
The biggest help I can give you is not another asset or another tutorial, but a change in how you think when building environments.
This book is about helping you start thinking like an environment artist and art director, not just a game developer placing objects in a level.
What You’ll Learn Inside
In this guide, you’ll learn how to:
Plan an environment before you open Unreal Engine
Build scenes in the right order, so you don’t waste time
Keep a clear style and visual direction
Use composition, lighting, and materials together, not separately
Guide the player’s eye intentionally
Avoid the most common beginner mistakes
Make environments feel believable, cohesive, and purposeful
If you apply this mindset, you’ll build better-looking worlds faster, and you’ll feel much more confident every time you start a new environment.
Common Problems Beginners Face in Unreal Engine
If you’re new to environment design, you’ve probably run into some of these:
Environments look inconsistent or amateur
Scenes feel cluttered or visually noisy
Lighting looks flat or random
Unreal Engine feels intimidating and overwhelming
Spending hours tweaking without improving the scene
This book directly addresses these problems and shows you how to avoid them from the start.

FAQ
What is environment design?
Environment design is the art of creating a world.
That world can be a realistic place inspired by the real world, or a completely imaginary universe that has never existed before. It’s about shaping spaces that feel believable, intentional, and meaningful to the player.
Can you learn Unreal Engine 5 as a complete beginner?
Yes. Unreal Engine 5 can absolutely be learned as a complete beginner, as long as you follow a clear learning path.
Most people struggle not because Unreal is impossible, but because they jump between random tutorials without understanding fundamentals. This guide focuses on mindset, planning, and visual decision-making, which are valuable even if you’ve never opened Unreal Engine before.
Do I need coding or Blueprint knowledge to get started with Unreal Engine 5?
No. You do not need prior coding or Blueprint knowledge to start learning environment design in Unreal Engine 5.
Environment design focuses more on composition, lighting, materials, scale, and visual storytelling. This book is designed to help you build strong environments first, without requiring programming experience.
Is Unreal Engine 5 good for environment design and level design?
Yes. Unreal Engine 5 is one of the best tools available for environment and level design.
It is used not only in games, but also by major film and TV studios for virtual production. Studios like Disney, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros., and ILM use Unreal Engine to build real-time environments for movies, series, and cinematics.
The same tools are available to you as an individual creator.
What do I need to become a professional environment designer?
To become a professional environment designer, you need a strong portfolio that shows:
Clear visual direction
Good composition and lighting
Consistent style
Attention to scale and detail
Studios care far more about what you can create than certificates or degrees. This guide helps you develop the mindset and process needed to build portfolio-ready environments with intention.
Is this book useful if I want to work in games or film?
Yes! The principles in this guide apply to games, cinematics, virtual production, and film environments. Unreal Engine is widely used across all of these industries, and strong environment design fundamentals are valuable regardless of the final medium.
P.S.
This book won’t magically make your environments perfect overnight.
But it will change how you approach them.
Once you start thinking in terms of structure, mood, composition, and intention, Unreal Engine becomes much easier to work with, and your environments will start improving naturally with every project.
