Hey E! 👋 Firstly, it's funny you brought up Batman here cause with my "present day" knowledge that Cap's best friend Bucky is played by the guy who's Now gonna also be playing an essential best friend to Batman, I find myself personally all the more excited to see how that all plays out. 🤓😅 Obviously, this isn't my first marvel watch-along with you by this point or your first marvel period but there "Is" something wholesomely awesome about your first avengers-based film being The First Avenger which simply makes me go LFG. ✊🤓✊ 😅😅 Side-note: now that you've gone and discovered the concept of the Multiverse for at least "this" universe, I have to highly recommend the "What-if" series which discusses multiple alternate realities in this timeline based off of even the smallest of variances...just saying that you would probably get a major kick out of watching Captain Carter: eventual protector of the Multiverse. 🤓🤣 NGL, I'd probably use my own "one wish willow" to experience the Multiverse of Batman alongside with you just to see where the timeline would lead the both of us but realistically I should probably use it for something like universal peace or wishing you nothing but good things in life as which you deserve. 😉😅 🤞🤓🤞 🤡🤣 Fun-fact BTW: the guy who killed Steve Rogers's German Dr friend in this (in another universe) was Thorin Oakenshield of The Hobbit/Lord of the rings timeline where he was essentially in charge of keeping a younger Bilbo Baggins safe on his adolescent quest which led to his discovery of The One Ring. 🤯🤣😅 Hail Sauron! 🤓🙃🤣
Your question about WW2 encryption: Ze Germans used the Enigma machine to encode and decode messages. A good movie about this is "The Imitation Game" which is about Alan Turing, who was a key figure in decoding this encryption.
Chronologically, this is the first MCU film set from 1942-1945 excepting the two framing scenes set in 2011. I feel it's an overlooked gem that establishes so many future films and introduces the moral center of the Marvel Universe. Much like in the film, Steve Rogers is a character plucked from a different era in Marvel's publishing history. In the 1940's, Marvel was known as Timely Comics and sought to produce a patriotic propaganda character to raise awareness of Nazi aggression in Europe. Writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby came up with Captain America whose first issue in 1941 featured a cover that had Cap socking Hitler in the jaw! It was an immediate sensation and flew off the racks! Cap came with a triangular shield and a teen sidekick called Bucky but had the shield design changed to a circular shape in the second issue because of complaints of copying the triangular design of another company's patriotic character. A young staff writer called Stan Lee had Cap sling his shield as a trademark offensive maneuver in a text-only filler story in the third issue! As popular as the comic proved to be, it also drew criticism for its pro-war position as many Americans wanted to remain neutral in Europe's war. Angry protestors gathered outside Timely's offices and NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia had to post police protection for the building. Simon and Kirby collaborated on the first ten issues. Decades later, when Lee and Kirby created the Marvel Universe in 1961, three characters were plucked from the Timely Golden Age and dropped into the Marvel Silver Age: the android Human Torch, Prince Namor of Atlantis and Captain America. The super-soldier was found by the Avengers in ice-bound suspended animation in the North Atlantic where he had disappeared thwarting an act of aerial terror at the end of World War II. The founding Avengers were Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hulk but, after their discovery of Steve in the fourth issue, Cap became a mainstay of the team often leading them as Chairman. Director Joe Johnston had experience with pulpy period earnestness with "The Rocketeer" and infuses this film with the charm of that one while also incorporating much of Cap's publishing history into the character's on-screen biography. The entire propaganda sequence brilliantly incorporates the Hitler punch and his triangular shield. His scrawny origin as a Depression-era kid from Brooklyn who likes to draw, his multiple attempts to enlist, his training under Colonel Chester Phillips at Camp Lehigh, Abraham Erskine's super-soldier experiment and his nemesis Red Skull are all very comic accurate. The cinematography has a desaturated sepia quality to it that evokes the past. Marvel had a World War II-era comic called "Sergeant Fury and the Howling Commandos". Comic Nick Fury is a World War II veteran whose vigor has been maintained by a diluted form of the super-soldier serum called the Infinity Formula. The squad he led was a diverse group that consisted of bowler hat-wearing Boston Irish Timothy 'Dum Dum' Dugan, African-American Gabe Jones, New York Jew Izzy Cohen, Japanese-American Jim Morita, Italian-American Dino Manelli, Southerner Rob 'Rebel' Ralston, Brit Percival 'Pinky' Pinkerton, German defector Eric Koenig and greenhorn Johnny 'Junior' Juniper. They were occasionally aided by French Resistance fighter Jacques 'Frenchie' Dernier. Fury's team answered to General Samuel 'Happy Sam' Sawyer who had a stony disposition. Johnston notably includes James Montgomery Falsworth's Union Jack as part of the team! Union Jack was a British nobleman and costumed adventurer during World War I who came out of retirement to lend Cap a hand in World War II. Despite an incomplete roster, Johnston brings the Howling Commandos to life fighting side-by-side with Cap! The cast is incredible! This was Chris Evan's second stab at superheroics and he was reluctant to put on the spandex again. However, Robert Downey, Jr. convinced him and the role of Steve Rogers aka Captain America fit like a glove. Sebastian Stan's brotherly love as James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes comes through as does Hayley Atwell's sympathy and fire as Peggy Carter. Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Dominic Cooper as young Howard Stark, Toby Jones as Dr. Arnim Zola and Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull round out the cast. Lending support as the Howling Commandos are Neal McDonough as Dugan, Derek Luke as Jones, Kenneth Choi as Morita, Bruno Ricci as Dernier and J.J. Feild as Falsworth aka Union Jack. Richard Armitage of "The Hobbit" ensures the serum will never be replicated as Hydra assassin Heinz Kruger. Natalie Dormer and David Bradley of "Game of Thrones" pop up in small roles as a man-eating WAC and a grizzled Norwegian, respectively. William Hope of "Aliens" has a bit part as the SHIELD officer overseeing Cap's excavation and Laura Haddock makes her film debut as an autograph seeker. Naturally, Samuel L. Jackson shows up as Col. Nick Fury to put in his two-cents. The screenplay brilliantly integrates Howard Stark, substitutes the Tesseract for the traditional Cap MacGuffin, the Cosmic Cube, links the Tesseract to Asgard, ages up Bucky and incorporates Peggy Carter from comic Cap's wartime flashbacks. Erskine's pep talk the night before the procedure is so crucial as to why Steve is a hero and his benefactor's wisdom echoes throughout the rest of Cap's life: "Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing: that you will stay who you are; not a perfect soldier but a good man." Steve's tactical acumen is demonstrated by his unorthodox solution to the flagpole challenge which earns him a ride with Peggy and her admiration. It's reminiscent of Alexander's brilliantly direct solution of slicing through the Gordian Knot. Steve's inability to quit against impossible odds is established by his boast "I can do this all day." Finally, Steve's forlorn "I had a date." is so laden with unfulfilled promise and poignancy. TRIVIA: 1. James Howlett aka Wolverine and Max Eisenhardt aka Magneto were to have cameos as a soldier and as a concentration camp prisoner, respectively, but the characters were owned by 20th-Century Fox and could not be used. 2. Hayley Atwell tentatively touching Steve's chest post-transformation was not scripted but was the actress' genuine awestruck reaction to Chris Evans' physique. EASTER EGGS: 1. Encased in a glass chamber at the World Expo is Phineas Horton's Synthetic Man, the android Human Torch. This is one of the three Timely-era characters resurrected along with Namor and Cap for Silver Age Marvel Comics in the '60's. 2. Kenneth Choi plays Howling Commando Jim Morita's grandson as well when he appears as the principal of Peter Parker's school in "Spider-Man: Homecoming". 3. Captain America autograph seeker Laura Haddock has been confirmed as Meredith Quill's grandmother since Haddock also played Meredith in "Guardians of the Galaxy". That would make her Peter Quill's great-grandmother. CAMEO: 1. Stan Lee appears as a General at the Washington award ceremony where Cap is a no-show commenting on how he thought the super-soldier would be taller when he mistakes the panicked handler who rushes onstage for the Captain. Lol. END-CREDIT SCENES: 1. The first end-credit scene is just an excerpted clip from "Avengers". 2. The second end-credit scene is a sizzle reel of "Avengers". The next chronological stop in the MCU is Season 1 of the "Agent Carter" TV series. PHASE ONE: 1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER 2. Agent Carter: Season One (8 episodes) + Agent Carter One-Shot 3. HULK (2003) [non-MCU origin] 4. IRON MAN 5. IRON MAN 2 + A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer One-Shot 6. THE INCREDIBLE HULK 7. THOR + The Consultant One-Shot 8. THE AVENGERS + Item 47 One-Shot Before starting with Phase 2, use the interlude to see the five non-MCU Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield: 1. Spider-Man 2. Spider-Man 2 3. Spider-Man 3 4. The Amazing Spider-Man 5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
So yup - this is the first full reaction of yours that I'm watching. I've been subbed to the YouTube for a month or so and finally decided to dive into this. lol, Batman is DC. There's a big difference between the two! One thing about your reaction that I'm not digging is that you chose to remove the image preview of the movie that you're watching. Honestly that would be alright if you included onscreen timestamps so I can watch along throughout without worry because of pause or anything like that. ((During the middle of the movie I had to up and leave the desk for a minute twice - I did my best to pause both videos at the same time and to hit play at the same time - but I'm sure that I was at least one second off - may not seem like much but when you're watching reactions it can make a big difference! :) I love how in the dark you are with this! That's what makes these first time watches so awesome! :) I'm very much looking forward to watching more movies with ya! Steve Rogers is so damn brave! You're going to be mighty shocked with all of what Marvel has in store for you! This is going to be very fun. :) lol, be patient and you'll learn it all. :P :) lmao, tesseract chopsticks? You're hilarious! hahahaha The WORLD likes Marvel movies. Like I said earlier - Steve Rogers is so damn brave! lol, this isn't a Nazi laboratory. Jacked is right! lmao - glad you had a drink with you, even though I'm sure you'd very much prefer to drink in some more Steve Rogers! :P lmao! Loved your face after he lept over that fence! I love that little boy knew how to swim. Borg Cube? lol - really like that you know a bit of Trek! lol, I began feeling sleepy at this point so I quit commenting throughout. I still watched though! lol, I think that I fell asleep for a short bit - no idea why I began the movie when I did. lol, it's 4:24am as I write this final bit. So I'm sorry for the weak comment toward the end of the movie. Future comments by me will instead be much improved over this one. :)
please watch them in release order!!
watching them in the order that they happen in the MCU makes more sense because iron man released before this movie but in the Marvel Universe Iron man takes place after Capitan America
Hi Eralia - Found you through your Pirates reactions but there are two things I will always pay a sub for and they are an MCU reaction from someone who has no idea about it and the Star Wars TV show Andor. Having watched dozens of MCU reactions and fan reactions to those reactions here are my best tips for your experience : 1) From now on do the release order ONLY because Marvel pioneered post credit scenes that are part of the story and set-up for the next Movie. Those don't make sense out of order. 2) Watch each post credit scene - sometimes it is one and sometimes there are multiple. It is easiest just to un-transparent and unmute the movie during credits so the Patreon audience can follow along. 3) Fans love when you react to Stan Lee who is one of the creators of these characters. He has a cameo in each movie up until his passing. Just search what he looks like and then you to can point him out. 4) The amount of content is overwhelming but the reality is the big draw is through to the end of Phase 3. Views will drop off after that and it your journey then becomes something that you have to be enjoying. Good Luck! I will be here until the end because I love this stuff.
The Marvel Movies are a bit confusing, Back when Marvel owned itself, it was on the verge of bankruptcy, so they sold the rights to X-Men, Deadpool, Blade, Daredevil and Fantastic Four to Fox, Sony got Spider-Man and Universal got the rights to solo Hulk movies. Then shortly after this happened Disney bought Marvel. After Disney bought Marvel they started the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) with Iron Man being the first movie. Eventually Fox sold it's entertainment division to Disney so Disney go the rights back to X-Men, Deadpool & Fantastic Four. For Spider-Man Sony worked out a deal with Disney to use him in the MCU. And as long as The Hulk is used in a team-up movie, Marvel can use the Hulk, they just can't do solo Hulk movies without Universal permission.
If your watching them based on the time line, then Captain America would be the first movie, but you really should watch them in the order they were released in the Theater, which would have been Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and then Captain America, all the movies are connected to each other, so by watching them in release order it will make a bit more sense.
Best suggestion, eralia, is to watch the MCU in release order. So far, it is 6 phases in. You want to know release order, you can read below or look it up, and also check for when things are actively coming out to know where it falls on the viewing order. First, thank you for your service. I'm am army vet, found you through tropic thunder. Subbed and grabbed the patreon after seeing you react to this. I can't wait see you experience the MCU. Especially the black widow stuff and the Russian angles. I would like to suggest you watch "The Hunt for Red October", however unrelated just to see you critique all the Russian in that lol. Happy I found you and can't wait to see the next thing!
So awesome to see you starting on this and getting to live vicariously through you! As others mention, yea definitely watch in release order, it's so much fun. do Iron Man next!!
Great video. And while I appreciate you now giving us the intro for syncing, I have to agree with the suggestion about adding a blurred version of the movie throughout. Heaven forbid we have to take a pee break and don't pause the feeds at the exact same time. :P (I lined the feeds back up using explosions reflected in your glasses :) A lot of reactors also have a small timer running with the blurred video. Even though we might not be using your streaming service, we can calculate the time difference, and use that and the blurred video to sync back up. (PS: You are now my favorite reactor! And I watch A LOT)
I can't speak for everyone, but when I watched this in theater I never thought this would be the start of one of the most epic franchises in cinema history. The journey has begun!
Great reaction! In your outro you were trying to decipher what makes a superhero and a supervillain going forward, but it’s not all just like Captain America. Over 23 movies there are many different ways our characters get to where they are, and many different styles of movie, otherwise it would get pretty repetitive, and that’s what The Infinity Saga does best. Different styles , different writers , directors. All leading to one coherent endgame. SUPER pumped for this journey! 🍻
I’ve watched a lot of your stuff on YouTube but I’ve now subscribed here for the MCU. Assume you’re watching on Disney+ , if you hit the ‘marvel’ tab on main menu scroll down and you’ll see ‘The Infinity Saga’. That’s what you’re after and it has all 21 movies laid out in the best order (release). (Note there are 2 Spider-Man movies in the Infinity Saga but are not on D+ as there are a Sony joint production. I’m sure you will be bombarded which suggestions, but this is my 2 cents. Can’t wait to watch you go through it! 🍻
Haha, this is going to be a great journey. I love how instantly you get attached to these great characters. What order will you be watching this in? I'm guessing since you started with this one that it'll be chronological, not order of release.
I think you're going to love Iron Man. His sense of humor is your bag.
If you're watching all (or at least a fair bunch) of the MCU movies I'd recommend you always watch the end credits scene(s). This one and maybe a few more are actual trailers with spoilers, but most of them are just additional scenes that tie the movies together and fun comedy bits that do not carry any significant weight. And if you are watching them all, I'm looking forward to rewatching them all alongside you! In release date order preferrably. ;D
Good start go look up the chronological order
I don't know why everyone is being so adamant that someone who is NOT a self-professed movie buff, and NOT a Marvel fangirl, that she watch the MCU in release order. I mean, she already started with Deadpool, which wasn't even in the MCU proper yet. She's got a century of movies to get caught up on, let her make wrong choices, it's not the end of the world. [Note to Elaria: IF your plan is to watch the entirety of the MCU, then yes, release order is definitely best, but... I hadn't yet seen anything indicating that was your plan, maybe you mention it in this watchalong, in which case ignore my comments. But you have hundreds if not thousands of great movies out there to choose from in this secondary gig/hobby of yours, and frankly not EVERYthing in the MCU is top-notch viewing, despite what lifelong fans might imply.] Edit to add: I didn't see anyone specifically say this, but I do strongly recommend watching Iron Man next. Might sound boring, I thought that too 17 years ago, but it's better than you might expect, and is pretty much the movie that is the foundation of the others, so if you don't like it, you probably won't like the rest of the MCU.
Eralia, you said, "crazy technology" when you saw the Red Skull's first plane that he escaped the facility in. It was actually based off of a German design that was still in testing at the end of WW2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focke-Wulf_Triebfl%C3%BCgel I knew of it because of a very old book on planes that my Grandfather had and eventually gave to me. He also served in the Air Force but way back during the Korean war.
Stick to release order please. It gets confusing if you do any other order
But if ever there was an MCU movie that can be watched out of order with minimal consequence, Captain America would be it. Worst-case scenario, the ending becomes that much more of a mysterious cliffhanger for her. And let's be honest, you can skip The Incredible Hulk movie, if it comes down to it. I can't imagine she's going to meticulously go through the entirety of Phase 1 & 2.
As others have said, recommend release order on first time MCU watch through. Still pumped it's happening!
So, um. the reaction video froze at some point and I didn't notice it. I feel it's been brought up before, but if you can leave the blurred reference video up throughout the entire reaction, we can sync back up when these hiccups occur.
Same thing happened for me (except it was the movie that froze, not the reaction), I hope that she remedies this in the future. :)
yeah, better to watch in release. Captain Marvel (which is sort of next in chronological order) contains a MASSIVE spoiler. You are best off going with release order. This one is not a big problem by itself though. PS: don't forget to play "spot the Stan Lee cameo" (he was heavily involved in the making of the comics and has a cameo in all the MCU films until he sadly passed away in 2017)
Throwin' in my 2 cents for release order! It'll be so much better of a watch in release order, Eralia. Source: - Trust me, bro
Adding another vote for release order, not chronological.
I had a feeling that grenade scene might get ya.
Love this movie. Cap was always a comic book favorite of mine back when I was a kid. This movie perfectly portrays him as that character. The sequel "Winter Soldier" is my favorite MCU movie.
Please please please switch to release order. I understand it’s possible you’ve already watched ahead and are just now starting the uploads, but if not then timeline order is best suited for rewatches, not first time watches. I subbed to your Patreon just to make this comment. It’s fine that you watched this one first, but I strongly suggest going release order after this one.
Please do not do chronological order, please do release order. They are designed to be watched that way, with hints in the mid- and post-credit sequences for later movies plus continuity references that expect you have seen the previous movies in the series.
I saw the YouTube upload and came here and subbed to say the same. Timeline order is so not great for first time MCU watchers.
