There were a lot of programs that actually needed updating, and many of them were in ancient languages (that are still used today, such as COBOL). I was working during Y2K as well, and there were most definitely systems that were so old/dumb that they only used 2-digit years. We had countless meetings to plan the patching and testing to make sure things worked, since I was employed by the billing section of AT&T, and you best believe they didn't want billing to get screwed up. Back when long distance calls used to be expensive.
I worked in IT at a GM plant in 2000, oh the pain of trying to remember COBOL & FORTRAN to fix old ass mainframe and AS400 programs. Lol these kids today don't understand the serious lack of storage in the 60s and 70s, due to cost, that meant dates were stored as 2 digits just to save precious disk (DASD) space -- and how many of those programs are STILL in use today!
