U
UN civilized · January 26, 2026

It's from the 90s. Those are coin holders for paying at tolls and also Toyota was like "what can we put here to fill this blank space". Those things in the back doors are ash trays. The trunk not opening all the way is because of the old gas springs. You can go online and buy replacements for around $15-60 for a set. You might have to buy it by length and force if you can only find ones over that price. Buying something vehicle specific makes it cost 3x for some reason these days

B
Brian Doan · January 11, 2026

Oh young people. The slots in the front are for coins. The compartment with the lid in the doors are ashtrays.

Gas springs for the rear hatch are an easy fix

D
Damon · January 4, 2026

The rear liftgate support struts are prolly just weak from being old. Your local parts store should be able to get them, usually only 20 or 30 bucks each and they most likely just have a lil metal clip holding them in and the new ones snap in.

N
Nar · January 6, 2026

They're gas shocks and the gas has leaked out over time, replace them. Common problem on cars of that era.

Hello from New Zealand. That's a good purchase except that the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car.

A
Aaron I Officer · January 3, 2026

Okay, I came back and finished the video, and seriously, this looks like an ex-family wagon. The stains in the rear, rear seats are probably chocolate and juice and stuff from kids riding in back. If this was a baller's wagon, or even an off road adventurer, those rear seats would have been lost in the back of a garage years ago. Any 30 year old vehicle that's been used will have evidence of use - yoink those rear seats out, give everything else a wipe down, learn how to use analogue controls, and enjoy the hell out of your truck.

N
Nathaniel Morgan · January 3, 2026

Those are ash trays in the back seat doors. Not storage 😂

N
Nar · January 6, 2026

Ash storage, duh! That and the slots for quarters makes me feel old. Also adjusting the heater temp and not having a backup camera, normal for anyone older than Henry! :D

K
Keith McDonnell · January 3, 2026

Back before EZpass (and inflation) people used change at toll booths, those cutouts on the center console are change holders. The "compartment" on the back seat arm rest is an ash tray. I think you also found an ash tray up front and didn't recognize it... also, hole in drivers seat was a cigarette burn.

What happened to the old car?

l

Nothing. Henry just bought a 4x4 to go camping in the woods with Kai.

J
JJ JingleheimerSchmidt · January 2, 2026

Also also Jay Leno had some laws changed because his hobby was costing the poor destitute fellow too much in taxes so you might be able to get a smog exemption depending on how you register the car.

A
Andrew Isago · January 4, 2026

Nope. The law didn’t pass. Still need to smog 1976 and later. Tax had nothing to do with it. Jay can afford to get almost any car to legally pass anyway. There is no specific tax on older cars if that’s what you are implying. If maintained properly Henry’s cruiser should pass with flying colors so I don’t think he has anything to worry about. The few “legit” exemptions are pre 1976 cars, and getting historical plates. You can register out of state but that’s under closer scrutiny now. Complete engine swaps are possible but rare since they involve paperwork and inspection by a state referee.

J
JJ JingleheimerSchmidt · January 2, 2026

Also it's a 30 year old car which means every seal, bushing, hose basically if its made of plastic or rubber needs to be checked before you put any real miles on. These items rot due to time and exposure regardless of miles driven. Low miles are a bonus.

J
JJ JingleheimerSchmidt · January 2, 2026

Modern cars with adaptive nanny features for every aspect of driving have bred crap drivers. 94 the only adaptive component was the driver and you had the same chance as any other creature when conditions change, adapt or perish. We were a better species then.

A

The little hook things between the front seats are actually coin holders, and the tiny little compartments on the back doors are cigarette ashtrays

Definitely has a robust off-road 4x4 campaign. Many Australians use Toyota Hiluxes in the bush and desert. It will serve you well if you take good care of it, Henry. Good choice, and I look forward to seeing you take it camping.

E

Henry .. that is one sweet car

S
SealSkinned . · January 1, 2026

For the camera, get a mirror dashcam and a rear window mount since this is an suv, really helps when the rear window gets blocked.

D
DennMark · January 1, 2026

You will have to replace the hydraulic rams on the “CARGO” upper hatch to get the hatch to stay up much higher than it stays now. The scuff marks on the rear passenger door caused by, well let’s face it, feet rubbing the door card during sex, the feet have to go somewhere, other stains in the backseat area are probably ejaculate. A lot of people have had sex in that cars, sorry Henry, but you will not be added to that list.

E
Eric Sandvik · January 5, 2026

More likely it was some soccer mom's car and it was children kicking doors and getting shit everywhere. If people were having sex in the car they probably folded down the rear seats so they had the whole back to fuck.

Happy new year to the both of you, I hope you two have fun camping this year! Can't wait for the next camping vlog! I'm glad Kai seems excited for it too.

C
Caleb · January 1, 2026

Honestly. Stains and minor damage considered. This vehicle was clearly very well cared for over the years. 31 years is gonna have little nicks accumulate in that time. It looks like there was no major damage overall. I think that's about as pristine as you could ask for. I can't speak for the engine, because I'm not a mechanic. But the engine does look clean and in good condition. My only question would be if the engine was rebuilt. Which sounds very likely considering that it has under 70,000 miles on it in 30 years. If so, that could cause you some issues down the road, idk. I just know that rebuilt engines tend to cause people issues. But I don't completely understand why that is. Side note; I'm fuckin stoked for a camping vlog!

l
lunsmann · January 5, 2026

Generally, a rebuilt engine has all the worn parts replaced with new. That is when it's done properly. Sadly too many cheap out and reuse the bolts that hold the pistons and crankshafts together. Those bolts are designed to only be tensioned once - then replaced when the engine gets a rebuild.

D
Doug Hill · January 1, 2026

Get some new gas struts for your rear window.

D
Doug Hill · January 1, 2026

To Henry, you have 4 coin holders on your middle console not hooks for attachments, and ashtrays on the rear doors. Back in the 90's people smoked a lot more. Tolls were coin operated so having coin holders was common and handy to have.

M
Mandoris · December 31, 2025

Heh, I'd say this is pristine for a 30 year old vehicle. Everything is relative... :) I believe those "hooks for mods" in the console up front are actually coin holders for toll roads. And that flap up bin in the door handle might be for an ashtray? It was a different time. A good thing is if that speaker is messed up, in this era it was a lot easier to just buy replacement speakers and swap them out. That pressure strut that holds the trunk open should be very simple to replace. You might want to just cough up a couple hundred bucks to have it professionally detailed. I bet a good deal of those stains would actually come out, those guys can often work magic Also would have the peace of mind that nothing is going to rub off on you, and its as clean as it possibly can be. :)

Well you can tell you are not car people, the compartment in the rear door was an ashtray for smokers. The struts on the back door/ tailgate are stuffed with new ones, easy to replace. For a 30-plus-year-old car, it is in good condition. I'm guessing at that age, with only 60 thousand miles on it, the clock has been wound back. I would expect a minimum of 200,000 miles.

A

R
RICHARD · December 31, 2025

Henry and Kai saying that it's the oldest thing they've seen makes me feel ancient. The slotted holes are where you put your spare change for tolls and such.

R
Ronin7577 · December 31, 2025

For a 94, it's in amazing shape. The hole in the drivers seat is almost certainly a cigarette burn and the rear window hatch just needs the openers replaced to get it to stay open all the way. Those things usually only last 15-20 years so they've been replaced at least once already more than likely. Shouldn't be too bad to replace and any parts store should be able to order them for you (just don't go to Autozone).

U
Unaffected Covid · December 31, 2025

Sweet hooptie, bro. Get it inspected and address the major things first, if any. You can put seat covers on, pick up some dome light bulbs, and back window shocks from the parts store, and have Kai do the install. BOOM! 😳

Z
Ziyn · December 31, 2025

Good find for a car. As many others have said already, the car is an old one, so it'll have features and things you might be unfamiliar with. Also, go get it checked out by a mechanic or two and get it thoroughly inspected and fix what needs fixing. WHat'd you call the ashtrays? Drug compartments or something? XD. I'm surprised the car looks as good as it does, at least superficially. But I am not surprised it does. Anyone can get it looking good before selling it (I would hope so), to show it off that it's in good condition. Hope it doesn't have a lot of problems down the road long term. Any car that old can last a long time if it's taken good cared of. Can't say for these new techy-type cars. Smarter yes, but as reliable as a car with no tech/smart features or not as much? Time will tell. Anyway, enjoyed the video again and the chill vibes you and Kai brought! Happy New year!

David Casteel KX8U · December 31, 2025

For the age, that car is clean and is great shape. Who ever owned it really took care of the engine as it was extremely clean even for a car half its age. As for the rear hatch, replace the struts as they are old. the hatch should stay open all the way. As for the stains, looks like the person had kids. Probably juice box stains, not wine. If the mechanicals are good, don’t complain. Not sure what you paid, but if this is a just a camping car, probably not much.

A
Alejandro Vidaurre · December 31, 2025

G
GilbertAC1 · December 31, 2025

Hey Henry nice ride. I to will sugest have a mechanic do a thorough inspection, and fluids change. Try to find a mechanic who will cut open your old oil filter and inspect it for metal. No metal indicates engine in good condition internally. Metal in filter is a sign of serious engine problem. You can also check carfax to see if regular maintinance was done. Best of luck with your new ride.

S
Stephen Annalise · December 31, 2025

That is a clean 80. Most of the 80 series in Australia have been thrashed by young newly licensed drivers and have more panel damage than a broad on a night out. The aftermarket modifications available here to pretty much suit your needs is crazy. I personally would do a 2 inch lift, 35 inch tyres, rock slider side steps and an apple car play radio head unit and most come with reversing cameras. The big one though is a proper bull bar, bar work and winch. If you go to an ARB they can sort most of that stuff out. Remove the back seats if you’re not planning on having passengers and a roof rack and roof top tent. You can also get fridges on drop down slides and solar panels, a second battery setup too to run the fridge. Long range fuel tanks, spare wheel carriers if you want one. What an exiting chapter. We have MXR 4x4 now. Awesome

I
Inertial Torque · December 31, 2025

The four divots in the center console are likely to hold change. The four screw holes probably held on a plaque that mapped out your gears like P R D 1 2 or 1 2 3 4 5 R depending on if it's automatic or stick. The little spaces with lids in the back seat are ashtrays or held them at some point. Get you a couple large cans of fixaflat and a pack of mixed fuses if you don't already do that in your other cars. Looks like plenty of room to even sleep in the back of that car with all the seats down. Always a nice option to have. I would invest in those little plastic rain guards that let you crack the windows without rain getting in then you can sleep with ventilation and no fear of rain.

d
d · December 31, 2025

As others have mentioned, first thing, especially based on your car knowledge and skills, get a mechanic that you trust to thoroughly go over the whole vehicle, whether the seller stated it had been serviced before delivery or not, assume it's way over, replace fluids, get everything checked. Expect a list of issues, it's over 30 years old, you've found 2 issues yourself, the rear cabin lights and the rear gas struts, those will be pretty cheap fixes, but, your mechanic will find more, and some of those may cost more to sort out, be sure to ask what's critical/most important though as I suspect the list could get quite long so you may want to prioritise some of the repairs - some things could get quite expensive. Once it's all mechanically good, get a deep valeting done, some of those stains may go away. From what little we saw, it doesn't look bad, but, you're probably going to want a to find a good and trustworthy mechanic that knows these and probably do a bit of learning yourself. At the very least grab a copy of the manual and give it a good read so that you understand what everything is...

L
Les Brady · December 31, 2025

The 4 places in that area between the seats is for your change. I used to have quarters in those for the tolls. But for being 31 years old it is in amazing shape. Just be prepared for roughly 15mpg, those things were gas hogs, but they were beasts that would go through just about anything (snow, mud, off road, etc.) To find one in that great shape is an amazing find. Biggest thing to watch for is the rubber boots on the CV joints. If they get old and crack it will get crud in the joints and ruin them. Just have them inspected once a year and you should be fine. Treat it well and it should last you another 31 years. By the way, the back seat door area where you found the lid to a little compartment, if it was metal inside, it is an ash tray. I bet it even has a cigarette lighter in the front dashboard. Don't be so picky about tiny things. As long as none of the stains can be seen with a black light, consider it in damn good shape. After 31 years everything has a little wear on it, but for its age it is in amazing shape.

O
Orionpax001 · December 30, 2025

Don’t worry about the interior. At that age it won’t be perfect. What you need to worry about is the underside of the vehicle. If it spent most of its life in the northern states, it could have a lot rust. That’s low mileage for its age, so hopefully it was used gently. But it’s probably not going to hurt to have a mechanic check it over. You don’t want to go on a camping trip and be ‘surprised’ by something. Those vehicles are a hot commodity for the 4 wheeling community. So join a page specific for it. Ask around if you have questions about it, or want to modify it.

J
John Newson · December 30, 2025

A lot of cars that big were used by families with children. It probably had car seats and kids spilling stuff and making stains. Henry is so used to his tesla, he called the engine compartment a trunk instead of the hood 🤣. Btw, the 3rd row seats split in the middle and fold off to both sides. Only concern id have about older cars (pre-97) is smogging them in california gets harder with time due to stricter regs and lack of older test stations. Those lil slots between the center armrest and shifter are coin/quarter slots i think 🤣. Depending on maintenance history, may want to replace the differential and tranfer case fluids, brake fluid (probably old/moisture causing spongy brake feel) and maybe transmission fluid. Engine oil and filter change is at minimum needed unless you know when it was last changed.

m
menthous305 · December 30, 2025

shame about the lights bro, check the fuse box first and look for blown fuses after that check the bulb and try a replacement, and if you have a volt meter check the contacts on the light and look for voltage while playing about with the button in the door crease, after that its a bigger problem like wiring loom corrosion or something. either way solid car, arguably one of the best iterations of the lc, good luck bro. ps you can get gas strut springs for the lc for cheap and they're easy to replace, with a couple spanners

J
Johnny Dough · December 30, 2025

I would no longer ever buy a used car. Why did the person sell it if it was in good condition, what with the cost of new and used cars these days? You are just buying someone else's problems. A good, new SUV is what I bought... a new Dodge Durango. It's larger than your new SUV, it's all wheel drive, and you can find used ones for a good price. I hope that I never have to buy another vehicle, as I have bought 23 new cars and 7 used ones in my lifetime. I am not rich, I was a blue collar worker, and I'm now retired, living on a fixed income. I didn't mean to trash your new vehicle, and I hope that it lasts you a long time, and that you get a lot of use out of it. Toyotas are dependable vehicles, and have a long life expectancy, so hopefully your new vehicle will give you many years of dependable transportation. Happy New Year to both of you!
