this probably actually happens a lot. the reason the animal was in the tree is likely because the lion had probably attacked it, and it was able to run up the tree. it might've been really injured and lost consciousness or whatnot in the tree, meanwhile the lion was basically about to take a nap, hoping it might try to make a break for it, so he'd have another shot at it.
