Dev Log #13~ WWKD?

Hiiii, everyone! Time for another dev log!

Development progress:

In the 3~ weeks since my last dev log, I've finished >450 renders and 2~ animations. Roughly 400 of them have already been edited, coded, and implemented into the game. This leaves my overall total right now at over 1,600 renders and just over 20 animations.

Looking at my storyboard and script for this update, I have about 600 renders and a handful of animations left to make... but before I finished this last batch of 450, I would have said I was 850~ away, so it always ends up being more than I plan for (as in, what ended up being 450 renders was planned to be something like 250~—but the scenes are better for it!!).

Still, though, I'm getting closer every day. Maybe it's cope, but I genuinely think people will enjoy this update. It's taking longer than any of us would like, but it'll easily be the biggest, longest, best-looking, and most feature-packed update I've released so far. I mentioned it last time, but it's fun to reiterate that every single character (I think) will be seen in this update. There are a lot of fun interactions, characters who haven't been in scenes together. It feels like a clear culmination of all of the hard work I've put in to making the island and its residents feel fleshed out and alive. It's an energetic, colorful update that leans into the school setting/slice-of-life vibe promised at the beginning of the game.

Long story short, I'm sitting on roughly 1,650 renders, and my script estimates the update to be around 2,200.

As I've mentioned before, though, roughly 300~ of those 1,600 renders are remade scenes as this update features some flashbacks and I didn't want to flashback to what looks like a fundamentally different game/character models lolol. I'm not prioritizing remaking old renders and try not to spend time on it over straightforward game progression, but it does feel good to slowly Ship of Theseus the early-game to a place I'm comfortable with. At this point, it's only the leftover H-content in chapter 2 I didn't get to before that I still really want to update so the animations and characters models match the quality of the rest of the game (Chapter 2's Sasha scene and the Cass+Behr scene in the library, mainly).

Other than that, I also really quickly want to shoutout Dr. Weeb over in the Discord who is generously working hard on an official Spanish translation for the game! When he's not making fun of the music I'm listening to on Spotify, he's asking me really cool, clarifying questions about dialogue and characters because he wants to make sure he's getting everything translated as well as he can, and it means a ton. Huge shoutout to my little Spaniard.

This is in addition the Indonesian (DaffaHello), Russian (Kway), and Dutch (JinxedJoyride) translations we also currently have in the works that I mentioned last dev log! It's a lot of work, so they're still a ways off, but it feels really good to know my game may be accessible to whole new groups of people!

General Patreon/Discord recap:

About the photos attached to this dev log: the first is a chill render I've made of the game's core cast hanging out at the beach. I particularly like the fun outfits Wake and Bodhi are wearing, and it's always nice to show the characters just hanging out. You'll probably see it a lot during promotion for Day 4, so I hope you like it...

I also wanted to show you all this fun poster I made of Ken. It's only for a split second background image in the game, but it means What Would Ken Do?, which is really something more of us should be asking ourselves.

In addition to these and the 450+ game renders since the last dev log, there has also been some fun bonus content here on the Patreon and Discord. If you haven't already, make sure to check out these highlights from the last 2 weeks:

And for those subbed at the Sun God tier or higher:

And that's not even everything which is kind of crazy considering it's been just over 2 weeks! Shoutout to Pickle, as always, for making/helping me out with these. I really pride myself on being able to regularly share something fun on here to fill the space between updates, and it (along with so much more) is all thanks to her!

If you're a Honey Select 2 user like me, don't forget to check out Pickle's Patreon page where you can find the highest quality hair models around!

Personal/Misc.:

As usual, there isn't much to report on the IRL front. Genuinely, the entirety of my freetime is spent working on this game.

I did binge the entire second season of the One Piece live-action show, though, which I loved and thought was super fun. It has such a great cast, and I can't wait for more. Pickle liked it a lot, too. I think with a little convincing, we can get her to finally check out the manga hehehe.

Also, I tried leaving Hot Cheetos in the freezer after I saw a trend on TikTok, and I'm not proud to report that I really loved it. They're Cool and Cronchy. It's very nice. It's not as weird as it sounds. It's not. It isn't. It's good.

Anyway, that's all for this dev log! Thank you, as always, for sticking around and reading.

Until next time, remember to ask yourself... What Would Ken Do?

Is there an approximate release date for the new update?

Oh man I really enjoy the One Piece Live Action. I think they make a lot of interesting and fun decisions with fitting One Piece into the format. I really struggle with the pace of the anime, but I love the manga. I started reading because my friend loves it and she finally convinced me. It took me about a year, but it was totally worth it. You should read it Pickle!
