Cyberpunk Mx5 Build Recap #3
So in the last post I covered shaping the first side of the widebody, and the snag that I ran into when trying to replicate the other side.
While I was doing basically anything I could to not make the other side again from scratch, I got a few other things sorted out. The first thing was doing the bumper cut and mocking up the new Yoshimura R77 muffler.
I also took the prototype aerocover for the wheels that I made back in the first post and made a mould off that so that I could get 4 nice shiny new fiberglass aerocovers.
I also revisited my initial sketch and this time showed off the new, more dystopian direction that I wanted to take it.
I also modified the ducktail spoiler to create my original 3 piece design before finally fitting the cheap eBay wing that I picked up with those funky clear polycarbonate struts.
With everything else that I could possibly do out of the way, I had nothing left to do but to get started on the other side flares. The way I did it was by removing the flares and creating matching grids on each side, then I was able to very easily transfer the measurements over to get the outer profiles exactly the same.
And honestly, the process of replicating the flares was incredibly painless.
All the trickiest parts were figuring out what shapes to make and I'd already done that on the first side so for this other side, I knew were everything had to be and so it was just a matter of pouring the foam and connecting the dots.
For the inner radius, I used the wheel as a reference and so created a simple template out of clear polycarbonate sheeting (one of the most useful materials around) to tell me exactly where I needed to finish off the fenders.
And in approximately no time at all, I had the other side completely finished and perfectly symmetrical.
So here I started working on the fun little cyberpunk extras starting out with with light bar.
Then the entire car got stripped down for an epoxy primer so that I could get it ready for final paint and wrap.
It was honestly only at this very point that I finally decided on the paint scheme which by now you'll all be familiar with but when I showed it off initial it was just crazy.
You can see I've got that pink coolant running in the line all the way along the car. I still really want to do that and so I'll see if I can get a way of working that into a future version of the build.
At this point I also built my cyberdeck for the interior using a salvaged laptop running linux mint and an external monitor. It all runs off an inverter that I've mounted inside the car.
The build was getting seriously close to finished at this point with the wrap being one of the last things left to do. I'll go over that with the next post.
