Elendil was high king of both Arnor and Gondor, but the governance of Gondor was divided between his sons Isildur and Anarion.
2:44 Aragon fought for Gondor under the name of Thorongil. A descendant of Numenor, who's Atlatis-esque rise and fall dominates Tolkien's 2nd age, he has a far greater lifespan that ordinary men. He is also the direct descendent of the last king of the fallen kingdom of the north, Arnor and it's last king, Arvedui.
The Istari were limited in power and forbidden to match force with force against Sauron. Their purpose lay in kindling the fire of resistance amongst others, for which the elven ring of fire was given by Cirdan at the havens to Mithrandir. Only Gandalf remained true to the purpose for which they were sent. The blue wizards, Allatar and Pallando, passed into the east and never returned.
At the bridge- "I am a servant of the secret fire" (the flame imperishable- the fire of creation- possessed by the creator of all, Eru Illuvatar) The Balrog, a Valaruakar incarnate spirit of fire corrupted by Morgoth, was given notice of who and what contended with him.
Of course, while the Vala abandoned direct intervention, they remained concerned about and for Middle Earth. Therein lay the origin of maiar spirits made incarnate in the bodies of seemingly old men, the Istari, sent to Middle Earth to encourage resistance to the dark lord. The 5 wizards.
The turning of good intent toward domination is also part of the nature of the one, perhaps due to the imbued life of its maker which empowers it.
Galadriel's ring allowed for the keeping of Lothlorien in a beauty akin to the land of the Valar, a power that ended with the destruction of the one. The elves had no desire to live in Middle Earth after their power to create a facsimile of the blessed land came to an end. They began leaving well before the actual end.
The invisibility and desire to maintain possession are lesser effects of the one in the hands of mortal beings, intended or otherwise. Longevity is true to its purpose.
As a spirit that existed before the making of the world, Sauron was inherently immortal, taking new physical form upon death. He gave that up- a calculated risk- in order to infuse the one with enough of himself to control the three- and, thus, the elves, to whose rulers he gave them. They however became instantly aware of this and removed their rings until Sauron's defeat in the last alliance of elves and men.
Drugs temporarily alter emotions. The ring(s) had a different purpose. The purpose of all the rings was to sustain life, or the semblance of life, beyond its natural confines. The quality of life could not be so sustained due to immutable natural law, only it's extent. Sauron created them as a veiled attack upon the gods, the Valar, knowing that they abandoned direct intervention in the affairs of mortals after the destruction that ended the first age. The intervention that ended his master Morgoth. There is a great deal more to it than that, within the fictional narrative.
It is not an analogy for drugs.
You'd have to read the Silmarillion to get the context.
I'm one of those weird, strange people who don't care for this film or the whole trilogy. I just don't get it. But I was never a big fan of "High" fantasy growing up anyway. One or two dragons or creatures is fine but that's it for me. The biggest thing is I do not understand the threat. Who da fuck cares about this one ring and why? It doesn't give you powers, except invisibility when wearing it. But when wearing it you become nearly frozen and deathly ill. So that sucks. Ultimately the ring doesn't do shit but bring out bad thoughts in good people and the worst it does is make you a homeless ring addict. So is the ring an analogy for drugs. Are we fighting over the ownership of drugs? He who controls the drugs is in power? Is that it? The ring just doesn't pose a threat and doesn't do anything as far as I understand.
