There are no rules on how to do certain things but there are many things that improve the quality of the results. When making garments you can start with a pre-made pattern and adjust it, you can shape the garment on the person or a mannequin then trace the pattern to reproduce it or go rogue. I guess the choice depends on the price of the material of the final product and your skill. This will be my first leather item so I traced the pattern first, picked a fabric that behaves similarly, adjusted it on me. Then basted it and once I update the pattern with the final adjustments I'll be ready to cut the leather
