Incident 005. Concerning a new variety of North American strawberry.

Created by genetic engineer Dr. Ana Nassa,_ fragaria famis _was intended to be an exceptionally sweet berry with mild addictive properties. The project had the financial support of the North American Strawberry Commission and was overseen by NASC food scientists. It was determined that _fragaria famis _provided no ecological risks and could appropriately be cultivated en masse. It passed all standard food safety tests, including tests for toxicity and potential allergens. The addictive property was of the most concern to both the NASC and Dr. Nassa, and small group studies found that individuals who were given a fragaria famis fruit expressed a desire for more. Additional berries were not provided, and the desire wore off within about 5 minutes. 

With initial curiosity as to the addictive properties when other strawberries were available, Dr. Nassa consumed a fragaria famis fruit with access to strawberry ice cream. She found the craving grew exponentially intense as she consumed more of the ice cream and claimed she felt unable to stop eating despite feeling full and having clear and intense intestinal distress. Her thighs, belly, and breasts grew in size, and her skin tone on her face and midsection became increasingly red as she ate. With the access to the ice cream removed, the swelling leveled out, and she eventually deflated back to a normal size, although slightly larger in the areas which experienced the growth. She testified that her deflation came with a projectile like expulsion of pulp and seeds from her anus, which she compared to a strawberry jam. She reports that she is unable to be around strawberries and strawberry products without feeling the cravings, and that eating even a small amount of a strawberry product results in bloating and defecation of the jam-like substance.

Fragaria famis is permanently disallowed for public consumption, and all available seeds have been seized by H.U.G.E.
