Visited Fort Pickens and it was a site to see. Here’s a little history for you:
Fort Pickens is a historic coastal fort located on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island at the entrance to Pensacola Bay. It was built between 1829 and 1834 as part of the United States' “Third System” of coastal defenses following the War of 1812. The fort was designed to protect Pensacola Bay, its navy yard, and one of the most important deep-water harbors on the Gulf Coast.

Named after Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens, the massive brick fort was constructed with millions of bricks and could mount hundreds of cannons. During the Civil War, Fort Pickens remained in Union hands even after Florida seceded, making it one of the few Southern forts never captured by Confederate forces. Its control helped the Union maintain a strategic foothold on the Gulf Coast and support the naval blockade of Confederate ports.

The fort continued to serve military purposes through the late 19th century, the Spanish-American War, and both World Wars, with modern gun batteries added around it as military technology evolved. It remained an active military installation until 1947.

Today, Fort Pickens is preserved within Gulf Islands National Seashore and is one of the best-preserved masonry forts in the United States. Visitors can explore its tunnels, gun rooms, and parade grounds while learning about nearly two centuries of American military history.
