The Office Problem - an original story
Chapter 1
My job is about as mundane as they come. I work as a secretary at one of the most prestigious firms in the city, a title that sounds far more glamorous than the reality. Don't let this fool you into thinking I'm important. Far from it. I'm essentially a glorified coffee maker, who files the odd report and spreadsheet all for a wage that was mediocre at best.
If you were to have asked me if I could ever have imagined working a job like this when I was 18 and studying in college, I would have scoffed at the remark!
Absolutely not!
Believe it or not, my goal was to be an Olympic swimmer, a goal that, if you saw me now, would probably seem both laughable and wildly unrealistic.
Back then, I was incredibly fit, an athlete, you could say. I was even the captain of my swimming team, and fitness had always been a huge part of my life. But when I left college at 21, life took an unexpected turn. I found myself in this job that meant I had to walk away from swimming and leave the team I had dedicated so much of my time to.
But as the years passed, I slowly stopped prioritising my fitness. The training became less frequent, the discipline faded, and, almost without me noticing, the weight began to pile on. The lean, athletic body that I once worked so hard to build gradually started to change, becoming bigger and softer with every passing year.
But that's what happens when life gets in the way. I got sucked into the harsh realities of life and my goals became a distant memory. I had to walk away from swimming and leave the team that I had dedicated so much of my time to. My days became a blur of filing reports, answering calls, making coffee, and running errands for people far more important than I was.
But it would be here where I would first meet him. My boss.
I would always tremble when he was around. He had a commanding aura that was unmatched by anyone in the building. He was calm, collected, cunning and ambitious beyond belief, and he was also very charming and charismatic.
Every day he would wear a different suit, each one tailored by the most competent and exclusive suit designers and fashion artists in the city. Each one would fit him perfectly, and he would pair each one with one of his many expensive watches, which probably cost more than my entire apartment.
And if his wealth, status and position wasn't enough, he was absolutely stunning.
He was tall, around 6 foot 3 to be exact. He had a muscular build with blonde wavy hair and bright blue eyes. He had perfect teeth and his smile was one of those rare smiles that you may come across maybe three or four times in your lifetime.
To say I had feelings for him was an understatement. We weren't very close, but sometimes, when he'd come to my office, there would be the occasional misty-eyed moment between us. And maybe he thought the same about me too. Even though I was way out of his league, I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part. Why would he have feelings for an overweight office girl who was way past her college years?
Today was my birthday.
It was a warm summer's day, with a nice breeze coming through my apartment window. I could hear the birds chirping outside, mixed with the quiet hum of cars driving through the city. It was actually a pretty peaceful morning.
There was just one problem.
I'd overslept.
And I was late for work.
I quickly grabbed my things and headed straight to work. I didn't even have time to do my hair and makeup.
I finally made it to work, bursting through the lobby and making a desperate dash toward the elevator. I jabbed at the button, praying it would open—but of course, luck wasn't on my side. The elevator was broken and i had to climb eight flights of stairs.
With no time to waste, I gathered what little dignity I had left and started climbing. I practically flew up the first few flights, my footsteps echoing through the stairwell as I took the stairs two at a time. By the fourth floor, my breathing had become heavier. By the sixth, my legs were burning and my heart was pounding against my chest. I was starting to wonder if making it to the office alive was even worth being on time.
When I finally stumbled onto the eighth floor, I was a complete mess. My hair was everywhere, my clothes were slightly dishevelled, and my face had definitely seen better days. I stood outside my office for a moment, desperately trying to catch my breath and regain some composure.
Then I walked in—breathless, flustered, sweaty, and very, very late for work.
As I stepped through the door to my office, I was hit by an unexpected wave of something warm and sweet. The air itself felt different—like I had wandered straight into a bakery at dawn. Hints of rich cocoa and melted chocolate wrapped around me, soft and inviting, completely out of place in the sterile office space.
I froze.
On my desk sat a birthday cake.
A perfect chocolate birthday cake, beautifully frosted and still fragrant as if it had just come out of the oven. The smell alone confirmed it—this wasn’t just any cake. It was fresh, homemade, and unmistakably chocolate.

Next to it lay a small note.
Two simple words were written on it: “Happy Birthday.”
I stared at it, my breath still uneven from the climb, my mind racing.
Who on earth sent this?
